Here they are.... The Blowfish!

/awkward

I was unwillingly dragged to a Hootie and the Blowfish concert a couple years ago. I was surprised; they put on a good show. I never liked their recorded stuff.

I guess he REALLY enjoyed doing that Burger King commercial.

Just goes to show you how absolutely phony and contrived they were in the first place.

De gustibus non est disputandum.

He's going to have a HUGE solo career. Good move, dude.

The magnitude of suck involved with that band and every single song they ever made is astronomical. I'll be happy when I never have to hear another word from Hootie or the farking Blowfish.

Here you go.

Link (new window)

Accidentally saw this on TV the other morning. Just as generic as Hootie and the Blowfish.

What's the matter Hootie? The blowfish thought you sold out when you made that stupid tender crisp bacon cheddar ranch commercial? Well they were right.

Ashtrey 2008-08-29 05:03:41 PM
I like how it says they had a string of hits in the 90s. Weren't they all on one album though?

Wait a second..... you're going to accuse Darius Rucker - the lead singer of HOOTIE AND THE FREAKIN' BLOWFISH of selling out because of a fast food ad? Are you farkin' kidding me? They were a front-and-center college rock profit band from day one.

Hey everybody - Chad Kroeger is a sell out! He did a Verizon ad!

One hit on the second album, and one kinda-sorta hit on the third. Not sure after that.

That story was beautiful, though I think I would have put his toothbrush in a bad place for good measure.

I was at an IHOP after a Phish concert and lo and behold, Hootie and all his Blowfish came in. This was outside of Boston about 13-ish years ago. They all ordered pancakes.

/good story, right?

greatgodyoshi 2008-08-29 05:33:30 PM
Actually, this isn't his first solo album. The last one was pretty good, but it was more Motown then Southern Rock/Folk (One song was written with Jazzy Jeff). I've heard his new song. Didn't realize it was him until the DJ said so. I happen to like country, and thought it was good.

Hootie's country music career.

I loved the Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch.

I read that as "spits" not "splits" because I saw the word "blow" and automatically assumed something sexual.

Did anyone else do so?

Hootie left Barbara Bush too. Both Hooties left Christina Applegate. That was much more traumatic. At least for me.

Same story here, and I'll go so far as to say that they were awesome live. They played "She Talks to Angels" better than the Black Crowes ever did.

Good luck to him, and all the guys!

Although I probably won't buy a single piece of music any of them releases in any genre or form, but I can't begrudge them from making a living playing music. Darrius may just make another fortune in Country. Who knows?

The are professional musicians. It's what they do. They all make music for money. It's not about art. Hell, their music "jobs" are probably more fun and financially rewarding than most jobs, even over ten years after they were huge.

I met them years ago before they made it big. They were all really affable people.

Right there with ya. I've taken abuse over publicly claiming that I like Hootie. And I'm sure I'll take some for saying I like that new song too.....

Galaxy of Prawns 2008-08-29 08:44:30 PM
Meh, I listened to them when I was a kid. I recognize now that they're just another unremarkable nondescript '90s band but the nostalgia's still there. Same with The Wallflowers. At least Spin Doctors still holds up.

Guess I'll step up and take my shots- this makes me kinda sad. Don't get me wrong- I hated Hootie. They used come through as an opening act at a college club in Greenville called The New Deli, and they always sucked. Imagine my surprise when I return from a year of drinking beer in Europe to find out they are huge. Despite their lack of ability to make decent music, two things stood out: they truly liked playing together, and Darius could sing. I wish him well as a solo artist, and will miss the fact that a group of non-pretentious non-assholes who stayed pretty cool despite their stardom aren't playing together anymore.

lies. they were not in his Burger King commercial.

I saw Hootie And The Blowfish at IBM Pulse 2008 in May in Orlando. It was one of the best live performances I have ever seen. Yes they were playing a corporate event, but they appeared to be sincerely enjoying themselves. As did most everyone in attendance.

chunkylover43: I work at a country radio station, and I gotta tell ya that there hootie can sing a country tune. One of the most requested songs we play.

these guys were hustling drinks at dive bars from Columbia to Charleston for years - with the same songs they put on Cracked Rear View years later.

I went to school in Charleston...and every station there had to play something by Hootie every third farking song for YEARS because they were local boys.

Made me want to inject acid into my ears and launch my car off the James Island Connecter.

Hootie would only be more entertaining if set on fire. The entertainment would only last as long as the fire, then we'd be back to baseline.

/doesn't like hootie
//doesn't think it's obvious

So will the band continue as "...And the Blowfish"?

/seriously, has anyone paid attention to this band since 1997's Fairweather Johnson?

Tony Gwynne? please he has nothing on Darius Rucker in the race for Whitest Black Guy. But actually, there's a correction: Will Smith and Wayne Brady have both of them beat.
