I'll have to hear how they sound before I decide whether or not to vote for Obama.

+1.

More proof that all Obama supporters are hippie, communist potheads. Or however that talking point goes, again.

Celebrity.

now there's a headline that's full of win.

This makes me so sad. I love the band, but I hate the candidate. I'll just have to catch ratdog opening for the allman brothers and miss out on this one.

No Jerry = Not the Grateful Dead.

I don't care if they put Warren Haynes or Joan Osborne or Jimmy Herring any other sub on the bill. It's all just lame kareoke without the fat man.

Bill_Wick's_Friend: No Jerry = Not the Grateful Dead.

You're right, that's why they bill themselves as the Dead and not Grateful Dead. Jimmy Herring shouldn't even be allowed to buy tickets to the show, much less near a guitar. Haynes is the only person I can think of that could possibly make this worth the price of admission. He's an amazing talent and has nothing but respect for Jerry and the band.

I won't go back to see any of the lame-ass revivals of that band.

Saw the Grateful Dead perform dozens of times. Was never as disappointed by a show as I was seeing "The Other Ones" or "The Dead" or "Phil Lesh's Croaky Creaky Can't-Freakin-Sing Travelling Roadshow" or "Ratdog"......

I just saw Bob Weir's Ratdog in Hershey PA on Monday night (opening for the Allman Bros) and it was the most boring farking show I've ever had to sit thru. The hippy girls with the pigtails under their arms were flailing about as if the GD never broke up. Gah!

I never saw the Dead in concert. Now I'm glad I didn't. I used to listen to their albums...now I'm scarred for life.

Bob Weir...shoulda been put out of his misery back int he 70s.

I hate - well, now that I'm an adult, let's just call it an extreme dislike - the Grateful Dead, but I respect Jerry Garcia enough as an artist to agree with this one hundred percent. Without Jerry Garcia, that's just a Grateful Dead cover band.

Maybe McCain can get the Mills Brothers to get back together in response. Or maybe Mitch Miller and the gang.

that's a good show right there, and i don't even really listen to the dead

i guarantee "touch of grey" gets performed

To all the haters, If you have never been to a dead show you would not understand. Loved the music and the canrnival like vibe from the shows. Never could like the smell of B.O. and patchouli though.
its a shame that there are no more bands that can do this nowadays. I feel sorry for you kids.
//Patchouli is the most foul smelling thing ever

Saw the Grateful Dead once. Once.

Good God they suck. Maybe it was because I wasn't tripping and therefore was able to see/hear the show for what it was: pure shiat.

Hippie band gets together with marginal skill, dupes a bunch of other hippies into the "feel the love" aura crap and lived off recordings of their live shows. How many farking live albums did they release anyway?

I'll still vote for Obama.

I saw the Grateful Dead back somewhere around 1989-1992, and I have to say the only thing I disagree with in your post is that I'm going to be voting for McCain.

I was too young to see the Dead, started listening after 95.

Have to go with Widespread Panic, and even they lost Hauser.

I hope the boys get back out on the road next year, especially if Richie McBush and the Tree Killer rig their way into office. A lot of us will need something to look forward to in a world where oil companies, anti-environmentalists, defense contractors and religious zealots can convince average people that it's in their interest to destroy the world.

The_Sponge [TotalFark] 2008-08-29 05:55:26 PM
As somebody who listened to the Grateful Dead in high school and is voting for McCain, I'm in really getting a kick out of these responses.

no jerry |= the dead

now that being said, if obama's makin' zombies then go for garcia zappa, joplin, kath, bonham, moon, hendrix, entwistle, and cippolina first. after those i don't care.

Check out anything from the tour he did w/Chris Robinson in the group. It's amazing how much better the material sounds with a capable vocalist.

And re: TFA, if Obama can get Phil and Bobby to resolve their differences, can Israel and Palestine be far behind?

Not gonna do much once they realize Biden is pretty anti-medical marijuana and responsible for some of the laws that put Tommy Chong away.

"what the f*ck are we listening to?!"

I'm considering seeing Phil plus the Allman Brothers at Merriweather on Sept 30, but the ABB don't have Dickey. That's like the Dead w/out Jerry, or Cream w/out Clapton. I don't want to have to pay for that half of the bill.

Jesus Christ you're a farking retard. You go to ONE show, and you think every single Dead show was exactly like that?

gotta disagree with you there. The first time I saw ABB Dickey was in jail and they played 3 hours and blew me away (Woody & Warren FTW). I've seen them countless times since then (not that many, but I just can't count that high) with and without Dickey and I must say that the lineup with Derek Trucks & Oteil Burbridge is incredible - it's even better if Warren Haynes is with them.

I've never seen Cream, but I've seen Clapton and he is highly overrrated in my opinion.

I've seen the Grateful Dead and I've seen The Dead and Jerry made all the difference. The biggest pisser about the last time I saw The Dead was that security was checking everyone so severely on the way in that they made me miss the Warren solo opener (and the farking local radio station was playing their shiat outside so I couldn't even hear it) - and even though they even looked inside both packs of cigarettes I brought in with me, I still managed to bring in a little weed - and so did everyone else.

Oh noes - someone might smoke a little pot at a Dead concert - how asinine is that?

What do Eric Clapton and coffee have in common?
They both suck without Cream

Musicology101 [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 10:10:16 AM
The Dead are merely good without Jerry. Not great. Instead of comparing The Dead to the Grateful Dead, I compare them to other bands running around now. In that respect, The Dead come out pretty good. It's still Hunters and Barlows lyrics and that was part of what made the songs so good.

Allman Bros without Dickey... well, the guys in the band are technically fine but Dickey was the soul of the band and they have lost that now.

Clapton is awesome. That is all.

ColSanders 2008-08-30 12:07:13 PM
Nice. Usually when Democrats bring back the dead it's only so they can vote.

/voting for Obama

doctorwormwood 2008-08-30 12:17:55 PM
Barack Obama's wildly successful rock concert-slash-nominating celebration was unprecedented, hip and a signal of a new generation. You didn't have to be a Democrat to enjoy the performances by Jennifer Hudson, Sheryl Crow, Michael McDonald or the new song by Stevie Wonder and Take 6
I lol'd

FTFA: They were probably the least disappointed of many modern acts when the bottom dropped out of CD sales because of downloading.

Right... the rush of people converting from tape to CD coming to and end had NOTHING to do with it.

/Figures Fox would print that.

HighOnCraic 2008-08-30 04:40:33 PM
Would love to hear them do "Throwin' Stones," the perfect song for this campaign.

"And the radical he rants in rage
singin' 'Someone's got to turn the page!'
And the rich man in his seven homes
Singin' 'Just leave well enough alone!'
But when his pants are down, his cover's blown"
