It's actually not so hard to play if you have the right effects, but it remains one of the most interesting phrases in rock music to this day. Serious innovation, talent, and drugs probably had a factor in the original song.

I seem to remember Marr had several amps all rigged up with the same tremolo settings pulsing in the studio to make this happen back in the pre Pro-Tools days.

There are so many options today to the bedroom musician, it's hard to believe someone will come up with another comparable musical/effect achievement, but I'm certain they will.

As long as it's more like this than Cher's "Believe!"

Nice work there, musician guy!

PC LOAD LETTER: mentally farked

how is their music mentally farked?

Godzilla: I seem to remember Marr had several amps all rigged up with the same tremolo settings pulsing in the studio to make this happen back in the pre Pro-Tools days.

Actually, what the guy does, a standard drum machine and compressor, is the old school spirit. Doesn't take ProTools at all to achieve the effect. Plus doing it this way makes it easy to reproduce life

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-08-29 12:18:07 AM
If Johnny Marr sees this he's going to hate himself for not thinking of it back when they recorded the song. Instead he did it in a really complicated time consuming way.

"Mentally farked"? What are you playing at? This is an example of mentally farked music:

Is it weird that I don't think Morrissey is emotional enough when he sings that song? His voice always sounds like runny eggs to me.

Actually, two years before the Smiths released "How Soon Is Now?"--
Midnight Oil recorded a song called "Only The Strong" which has the exact same super deep shimmering vibrato effect.("vibrato" and "tremolo" are different, vibrato is pitch and tremolo is volume)

Here is Marr:

Marr gave the following account to Guitar Player magazine in 1990:

"The vibrato sound is f*cking incredible, and it took a long time. I put down the rhythm track on an Epiphone Casino through a Fender Twin Reverb without vibrato. Then we played the track back through four old Twins, one on each side. We had to keep all the amps vibrating in time to the track and each other, so we had to keep stopping and starting the track, recording it in 10-second bursts... We did it in three passes through a harmonizer, set to some weird interval, like a sixth. There was a different harmonization for each pass. For the line in harmonics, I retuned the guitar so that I could play it all at the 12th fret with natural harmonics. It's doubled several times."

Well at least it wasn't easy creating the art. I knew there was something crazy about the "Waaaa-eeeeew" lead. Open-chord harmonics... nice.

Awesome just reading what all he had to go through just to get the effect.

What do I win if I can play it?

Nice guitar, I have a Rickenbacker 4003 JetGlo Bass I love playing.

I'm looking to start recording again. I had Cakewalk about 10 years ago and I hated it. It was clunky and complicated. Does anyone have any suggestions on something new? Looking for something reasonably priced.

If you have a Mac, Logic Express is fairly reasonably priced with many nice features. Ableton is easy to use as well, and available for the PC, IIRC. Check out tweakheadz.com for a good comparison between recording software. Some are better for certain styles of music than others.

I run Logic 8, and am extremely happy with it.

I don't even waste my time fantasizing about Rickenbackers any more.

Way too damn expensive.

Rickenbacker is an asshole company too.
Very arrogant and pushy.
Every time someone puts one of the superb Ric copies (Aria,Ibanez,Greco Electra etc.) on Ebay the jackasses at Rickenbacker force them to be withdrawn over threats of lawsuit.

I was going to ask how The Smiths managed this live, but a quick search of Youtube reveals they didn't even try -

But when Morrissey does it solo, they at least attempt the effect:

That's odd - when younger saw The Smiths half a dozen times, and Marr managed a much better approximation of "How Soon Is Now" than that. Bad setup in Spain?

*DROOLS* I want that dude's home recording set-up. Um, except unless he didn't show a keyboard set-up, I'd have to add a Hammond C3>Leslie, piano, Mellotron, MemoryMoog and one of the new digital MiniMoogs.

I'm surprised no one jumped on this:

Wait, step the fark back for a minute. You mean this innovative group of underage lesbians making out in public didn't come up with that?

Listen to some FM pop radio, then come back and listen to that t.a.t.u. version. Yes it's a beautiful landscape seen through a single-color filter, but the essence is still there.

I've not heard of these people before, despite appearing in the same GFPM as Vai's Call It Sleep and I always had to flip past it to get to my beloved tab.

I can't stand the way this dude sings. I would be all for some remakes, although I'm not recommending t.a.t.u. for obvious reasons: they aren't real lesbians and are no longer underage.
