I remember a story that I was told about Raccoons when I was in first grade in Germany. They talked about how the raccoons wash everything they eat. It was basically a story to teach kids to be clean.

I hadn't thought about that until now.

And now that I think about it more... I also seem to remember the story had something about the Raccoon trying to wash sugar cubes... only to drink the water after.

I, for one, welcome any attempts to mass exterminate raccoons no matter where it happens.

So basically instead about being a lesson about hygiene, it's a lesson about living with OCD.

Raccoons don't have any natural predators over here either, which is why they flourish in suburban areas so well. I had to tether all my bird feeders on cables or on projecting rods out away from the trees, or the raccoons would empty them every night. Even the squirrel cages around the feeders didn't stop them; they would reach right through the grates and help themselves.
