Thank you for not using the "IRONIC" tag.

Did he spontaneously combust?

You know, I'm a pretty big Mats fan and I didn't even know they replaced Chris Mars at the end. Of course it was after their last album, and I didn't even get into them until awhile after they broke up, so I guess that's understandable. Anyhow, still a bummer....

I guess now we're just waiting for those responsible for replacing the Replacements drummer who was just replaced, to be replaced.

Dozens of people spontaneously combust each year. It's just not really widely reported.

Saw him live with the 'Mats, and he was a mighty fine drummer. A shame.

He went from being in a fairly well known band to selling cars at
age 49 and he 'accidently' over-doses on prescription meds?

Sorry for his family but I doubt it was an 'accidentle' od.

Chris Mars decided he wanted to be a painter, and the last Replacements record was a Paul Westerburg record more than anything else.

A Replacement once bit my sister.

TIM is one of the best albums ever.

This much I knew, I just assumed Mars stuck around until the end and then moved on to the painting.

Bizarre gardening accident.

I like how in the article they say Steve Foley replaced original drummer Steve Foley.

Wake me when Chris Mars dies. Westerberg's already dead to me.

You know, I downloaded 49 Minutes the other day and haven't bothered to listen to it yet, even though reviews were QUITE positive. (4+ stars at Amazon)

Maybe tomorrow, after the kids head to school.

RIP, drummer guy.

Hey all, I'm looking for a thread where we all try to prove our infantile and worthless indie cred by mindlessly regurgitatng how much we hate Westerberg now, even though he's put out some of his best material of his career in recent years.

Oh look ... I found one.

Holy shiat. I almost bought a Jeep from that guy at Wayzata Nissan. I was brand-new in town a year or so ago, and I went there looking. He came out, and we chatted for a bit. I told him I was looking for a bigger vehicle that would comfortably accommodate my drums. "Oh, you play?" He said. I responded in the affirmative. He said, "I'm a drummer too. I played with the Replacements for a little while." "Wait...THE Replacements?!?" I asked. I actually didn't believe him at the time. But I took his card, and Googled him when I got home.

Sure as shiat...He did.

Poor guy was young. Nice dude, too.

The Replacements are good,
but they are no Black Uhuru.

I was relieved to click the link and find out this wasn't Chris Mars, but this is very sad. I read the book referenced in the article, and Foley seemed like a good dude.

Saw Foley with Bash & Pop. That was a good band who made one great record. (Friday Night Is Killing Me).

Color me impressed.

You won't get that from me. While not everything he has done solo has been of equal quality, I think the "Grandpaboy" stuff is as good as the 'mats at their best. He's really found his sound, too, with that production quality that's so identifiable. And the man still can write a hook the size of the Mall Of America.

The 1990 selection of Foley... as the substitute for original Replacements drummer Steve Foley has become the stuff of legend.

Replacing yourself? That is indeed legendary.

Sorry, InmanRoshi, but I'm not trying to score indie points. (With whom, anyway? You assholes? That's a laugh.)

I sincerely find all Westerberg's recent work a pale imitation of his old stuff. Like a man with a weak heart, trying desperately to stay on a treadmill. I cringed all the way through the execrable Come Feel Me Tremble video. Just sad.

This comment was completed in an entirely different style at great expense and at the last minute.

I'm guessing you have not heard the Grandpaboy material.

Oh, and class move calling everyone else an asshole because you disagreed with one person's post.

I saw Westerberg almost get stabbed a few years ago. God that night was fun.
As for his recent stuff, well, no, it's not the same as what he was putting out when he was 20 years old. I do wish he would play with a pro drummer but beyond that I like his new stuff for the work of guy his age. He can still do some rockers as well as some songs that are more powerful than anything he wrote back then. Yeah, Unsatisfied is great if you're in high school or not long after and you're stuck and not getting anywhere but I think 27 Years from Folker is just about one of his most painful and beautiful songs he's ever done. I still Got You Down is one of his best songs ever. Sure, he can and still does write rockers but that was never all of what he could do.
As for Foley, never saw him play (didn't get into the Mats until the early/mid 90's) but everything I've heard says he was a fully capable musician. Shame to see him crash like this.
