When did Drew start drumming for Metallica?

TonnageVT [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 01:23:36 PM
Does Lars just throw in blast beats at whim now???

It's harder than usual, but not that good harder like their old stuff, just harder for the sake of being harder.

TonnageVT [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 01:25:07 PM
After listening to it again, I will say it is definitely better than most of their recent garbage.

SchlingFocker [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 01:25:29 PM
No, it doesn't sound good.

You know why?

Because the reason Ride The Lightning and other early albums kicked so much ass is due to the fact that Metallica was young, drunk, high, pissed off at the farking world, and starting off poor.

Now, they're old, relatively sober, calm, and rich.

All of the pent-up youthful angst, anger, and aggression was taken out on their instruments.

They don't have that kind of anger anymore, and it shows in their music. They're still technically very skilled, but when they play, you just don't feel the anger.

That's why it's not good, and that's why it doesn't sound like their old stuff.

Once again, Metallica died in 1996. Whatever you think you're hearing now is most certainly not Metallica.

It's better than that song that was up here the other day, but I'm still not having it.

Master of Puppets will forever remain one of the all-time great albums.

Ride The Lightning = win

The Black Album was the last good one. They will never be any good ever again.

Lars sucks.

I think this nails it right there. Metallica used to be really angry - angry about war, angry about religion, angry about Cliff, angry about Cthulhu, and now they're not really angry, they're just faux Hollywood "bad ass".

It's like that dude in your neighborhood who used to be the hottest shiat around with his Thunderbird and hot girlfriend and now he's in his fifties and still drives that T-bird and still has the same pair of sunglasses and still wears the same muscle shirts except now they're 30 years older and no matter how drunk and belligerent he gets he's still not the same guy.

Tr0mBoNe [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 02:33:16 PM
It's pretty good. But I won't buy it... it's not that good.

Who are these farking guys? They kinda sound like old Metallica

This sounds like a god-damn demo tape from the 80's. WHY IS THE SOUND QUALITY SO shiat?

I hope it's because they aren't releasing the final cuts...

SoothinglyDeranged [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 03:07:08 PM
Yeah, it's the lack of emotion. They're good enough musicians, but it just feels like they don't care anymore. Especially Hetfield's singing, it is just so listless and boring.

It's almost like Fark is a secondary Metallica PR machine. "It's JUST LIKE MASTER!!!! I SWEAR!!!"

When will people realise that their classic material isn't even that good?

steveo 2008-08-26 03:52:38 PM
Patterson, "your favorite band sucks" doesn't have quite the same punch in a thread where 90% of the posts are "my favorite band sucks".

meh.

Rickenbacker 2008-08-26 03:57:27 PM
I've heard an mp3 of it. Sound quality is better, BUT...it's typical Rubin production. I don't think it works for Metallica. I love Rubin's work, but this isn't a good fit.

That said, the song isn't great. It's better than the first one, way better than anything on St. Anger. It sounds like a Metallica tribute band though. They're just going through the motions.

echoshizzle 2008-08-26 03:57:48 PM
Sounds like they are trying too hard.

They should have killed themselves years ago

atowntommy 2008-08-26 03:59:15 PM
When did James Hetfield become Tom Araya?

Just saying.

ElRonHubbardsBalls 2008-08-26 03:59:43 PM
Once again the drums are the weak spot. They don't fit with the music. Tonally it is a mess...no melody. It just doesn't sound finished. There is potential but I just don't understand how this is a finished work of any kind.

Nailed it.

Although, I have to admit, I kinda dug this song. It was much better than The Day That Never Comes.

I'll bet this album will be like The Black Album, with a couple of decent tracks, and the rest shiat.

Cornwell [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 04:10:53 PM
I really couldn't tell over the shiatty quality whether or not the snare still needs to be shot or not. Sounds musically like some of the old stuff prior to the festering pile of shiat that was Load.

I still don't think Metallica will ever release anything like The Black Album, Paster of Muppets or Ride the Lightning.

barneyfifesbullet 2008-08-26 04:11:28 PM
People whining about the drums is so farkin old already.

You hate Lars. We get it. Everyone gets it.

That's a good track BTW. About as good as we can expect from this chapter of Metallica. Nothing will ever touch the first four albums. That's just the way it is.

Still want to hear the new stuff on cd where the songs might take on a whole new light. Low bit streaming audio makes it hard to get into something.

And, this is why they should stop trying to play metal. Explore some different styles.

Chris Cornell has done damn well exploring different styles.

Unless you're Slayer, chances are you're not going to be able to play metal and play it well for 20 years.

Fixed that for you, Cliff Burton the only talented member of Metallica died in 1986.

I think its pretty thrashed out. I like the song.

if the rest of the album is like this, i never thought i would say it... but i'll buy it.

Now, They could make up with mustaine. Do a co-headlining tour. Have testament and exodus open.

scottycujo 2008-08-26 04:22:17 PM
At least Hetfield SOUNDS pissed off in this one. And it's definitely faster.

Mugombie 2008-08-26 04:23:15 PM
I might download it

mightybaldking 2008-08-26 04:26:09 PM
It's pretty good, except for that crap-ass drum sound.

Whatthefark 2008-08-26 04:30:49 PM
I like it. Actual double bass drums, the classic crunch they seem to have lost. It keeps going the whole song too. The last song of theirs I remember being that fast for that long was Dyers Eve on Justice.

One question though, why does he keep singing about Paco's lips.

Mo'Phat 2008-08-26 04:31:20 PM
After listening to it a few times on my crappy work speakers through even crappier earbuds, there's some real creativity there. Especially the part after the chorus (2:00-ish).

I won't pass judgement until I can give it a good listen on a decent system. Robert Trujillo deserves a subwoofer.

So far, I'm liking it...a lot.

PS: If they can pull off the 16th's night after night (at the end of the song), they'll get my awe. Good on 'em.

I don't dislike Lars. I have been a drummer for 20 years, used to teach/tech, worked in music stores, played in many bands/live shows, etc.....I just think it's a crappy drum sound. It sounds like a regular five piece kit, right out of the box, no tuning, and beat on like an ape. It has no character, the snare sounds crap....the drum mix is strange and seems disembodied from the music. On old Metallica...the drums were right in the mix and didn't stick out like a sore thumb. I really don't know much about mixing but it seems that all of the instruments are fighting for center stage.

I don't like or dislike Lars.

momojoboo 2008-08-26 04:32:46 PM
Ok, I heard it this afternoon, and it's deffinetly better than what they have put out in the past. And the good ol' days are long gone. There will never be another Puppets, Justice, Lightning, Kill 'em all.

I too agree. It's just not the same without the hungry, drunk and pissed off energy...In rock and roll getting old and sober pretty much is saying "From here on out were just on cruise control".

We want our music angry and about to die.

Danger...It's about danger. When James sang Seek and Destroy or Hit The Lights or even Whiplash you got a sense that the crazy motherfarker was going to climb out your speakers and beat the shiat out of you or at the very least rape your mom. Now he couldn't be bothered, but he just may hire a lawyer and sue you to prove just how hermetically sealed and safely disappointed he is.

I was a teenager when the first few records came out and it made sense then. It got through all the angst and brooding, it was real. It made me want to kick the ass of the anyone who got in my way. And then fark their girlfriend. Just to prove how mighty I am.

In fact my hoodlum friends and I were part of what you would call a gang now, but back then it was a bunch of long haired kids sticking together to watch our backs in tough places called Damage Inc.

/trip down memory lane over.

Derwood 2008-08-26 04:33:26 PM
Way better than the first track. My faith in Rubin is still there.

iammatt 2008-08-26 04:34:35 PM
I don't understand..... It's faster and "heavier" if you will, but it's not "THRASH". Hetfield's growling is nothing like it used to be, the drums sound tinny and overly compressed. I don't know about anyone else, but when I think of Metallica's drums, it's the Big, BOOMY, Ride The Lightning/Master of Puppets drum sound, now they just sound flat.

There's just no energy behind this track, it's like the vocals were chosen to be "growled" instead of Hetfield's pathetic singing of norm of recent.

Not good. Faster != Heavier.

e5wsf 2008-08-26 04:35:18 PM
What a crapfest! Playing a crappy song faster and harder only makes me happy that it's over sooner.
Give it up and retire already.

Uncle_Slacker 2008-08-26 04:37:43 PM
The Black album was the last good album? The black album was the demise of your bloody Metallica. The Black album was the start of the generic single riff songs written for radio. It all went downhill after the video for "ONE." Money. The love of money is the root of all evil right? The stupid black album - radio, video, multiplatinum black album... millionaires overnight... they became the new FAVORITE band of all the Frat boys. The black album, yep. None more black. Smell the glove? No. Shiat Sandwich.

Although I do consider Justice their last good album, I do prefer Kill 'em all, RTL and MoP. Not that I was ever so much of a fan that I actually BOUGHT those records. No, I borrowed the records from friends and taped them.

I spent my money on Sepultura records.

When will SEPULTURA release another record like Arise or Chaos A.D.???

Wrong_Intentions 2008-08-26 04:38:44 PM
Subby: I too used to be in denial about Metallica's downfall. I excitedly bought St. Anger on it's first day and wondered why the store wasn't packed with others doing likewise. I have come to reality about this, as should you.

/Song would actually be good if not for the snare, Hetfield's cartoonish voice, and unimaginative lyrics. Kirk should fire those two.

EbolaNYC [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 04:45:56 PM
Sorry but if you mean "good" as in "sounds like a cheap Slayer ripoff" then you would be correct.

Other than that. This sounds nothing like "vintage" Metallica.

Sorry subby, I grew up on this shiat when they were just starting out. I can't stand them anymore.

Sad. So sad.
