No THE BAND?

Singlehandedly launched the Roots Rock revolution (Derek & The Dominoes, Traffic, George Harrison 's ALL THINGS MUST PASS, etc.)

THE DEAD were blues before Pigpen went teats-up.

Also THE DOORS (more Latin influenced than anything, though)

Yegads, placing Fleetwood Mac ahead of the Allman Bros, 'tis yet another trolling blogger.

What, no Kid Rock?

/I keed, I keed

CravenMorehead 2008-08-26 02:42:03 AM
The White Stripes make that list? The White Stripes?

lajimi [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 02:49:53 AM
Big Brother And The Holding Company: Janis Joplin eventually had to ditch these guys because they were considered too rough and raw and she wanted to be more classy.

IMHO Janis did her BEST work with Big Brother. Summertime, Piece of my Heart...Enough said.

CravenMorehead: The White Stripes make that list? The White Stripes?

My reaction as well... total BS.

I think John Mayall and the Yardbirds should be higher- certainly than FLEETWOOD MAC of anyone...

DrBenway [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 04:21:22 AM
I do not see Blueshammer on that list. Worthless.

CravenMorehead: The White Stripes make that list? The White Stripes?

The exception to the rule I guess. The rest of the list wasn't bad.

lajimi: IMHO Janis did her BEST work with Big Brother. Summertime, Piece of my Heart...Enough said.

Should be on the list:

Foghat
AC/DC
Fabulous Thunderbirds

il Dottore 2008-08-26 04:54:40 AM
Rob O'Connor is an idiot.

But what else could you expect from a guy who only took Intro to Journalism 100 and History of Contemporary Music at his community College to prepare himself for his important job at Yahoo?

When I read these kinds of...things...my heartbeat goes all irregular so I divert myself by imagining the author lying naked on his kitchen floor paralyzed by stroke, awake, and being eaten alive by his starved cat. And then I feel better.

HunterT 2008-08-26 04:56:38 AM
I'm not going to lie, I expected that list to fail much harder than it did. It was an alright list.

/No seriously, Cream above Jimi?
//Jimi didn't die, the Blues just took him back

frostus [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 05:14:02 AM
Killer Miller: Should be on the list:

also Savoy Brown

skeeterjennings 2008-08-26 05:33:54 AM
Even by rob o'conner's usual idiotic standards, this list is crap.
I love SRV, but how do you put him above Hendrix?
And the Allmans are not in the top 5, not even the top 10?
Duane Allman is the best guitarist on the best record Clapton ever made.

Sgygus [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 06:14:14 AM
lajimi: IMHO Janis did her BEST work with Big Brother.

There should be a special place in hell for the studio engineers (and others) who turned Janis against Big Brother.

J. Frank Parnell 2008-08-26 06:24:38 AM
Oh man, just one black guy and it's Jimi Hendrix. I'm as white as anyone, but even i know white people only try to emulate blues.

benlonghair [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 07:19:03 AM
White Stripes and Fleetwood Mac made the list but no Blues Traveler!? Fail.

benlonghair [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 07:22:52 AM
After reading the intro, I suppose Blues Traveler wouldn't qualify since they're really just straight blues.

I agree about not putting FM ahead of the Allman Brothers (DEFINITELY in my top 3), but the Peter Green incarnation absolutely belongs high on yhis list.

DrBenway beats me again! (always ahead of me with the funny)

Blueshammer ftw!!!

"authentic blues"

The Dynamite Monkey 2008-08-26 07:52:39 AM
While not an excrebale list, there are bunches of failses:

- ZZ Top only #14? Are you on dope?

- Jimi should be #1 for sure, and if not Jimi Led Zep.

- Cream was about Eric wanting to go away from the blues and into a jazzier vein. Sure his solos were often blues scale, and they covered Spoonful and other tunes, but I don't think that warrants them #1.

- Black Sabbath? The tritone is not on the blues scale pal. About as un-bluesy as you get. And it is what made Sabbath so special and spawned 1,000 imitators.

OldManDownDRoad 2008-08-26 07:53:06 AM
Not a bad list, all in all. Early Fleetwood Mac albums always astonish those folks who have only heard the Buckingham-Nicks incarnation. Nice to see Robin Trower as well - Bridge of Sighs belongs in every serious rock collection. Also nice to see Blue Cheer and Canned Heat, who are also slipping into obscurity.

Johnny Winter deserves some kind of award for being on tour since the mid-60s. Geebus. I've seen Winter in the 70s, 80s, 90s and last year. He always looks terrible. People who think Keith Richard looks bad just haven't seen Johnny Winter.

Jeff Beck, Allman Bros, Paul Butterfield, Hendrix and Cream. The list looks suspiciously like the front row of my album shelf.

I'll admit to not getting The White Stripes, though.

Agreed - wore the grooves off of Hellbound Train!

/A decent list, just too short.
//Would have included Humble Pie
///and Three Dog Night (their early stuff)

Dear Jerk 2008-08-26 07:56:43 AM
Fleetwood Mac at number eight? When they were a blues band, they were nothing special. I say this because on their songs where they have a real bluesman sitting in, they sound A LOT better.

Also, where's the black guys?

clownyclownzomby 2008-08-26 08:09:57 AM
I think the list is incomplete without a mention of Graham Bond. Baker and Bruce, and to a lesser extent, McLaughlin and Heckstall-Smith played with him before stardom. Maybe a bit jazzy, but contained a lot of blues. He also one of the first to use the Mellotron. There would be no Cream or Colosseum without him. A strange and underappreciated talent.

craigdamage 2008-08-26 08:19:35 AM
Yes Black Sabbath.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uryWJ1T1q4 (classic rock-blues)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-T_6IdXFuw (pure blues)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFp0yEoMsV4 (heavy jazz-blues)

...and here is Iommi in Jethro Tull doing a very bluesy number:

PizzaJedi81 2008-08-26 08:32:35 AM
List fails due to lack of Blues Traveler on it.

zeppo [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 08:43:44 AM
Da Stones are the best RHYTHM and Blues band of all time, bar none...cause they had ( and I emphasize HAD ) simply the best rhythm section. Its no coincidence that they only became a good band after picking Bill and Charlie up, and no coincidence that they went downhill musically after Bill left!

straight blues can be REAL boring, but its Rhythm and Blues that jumped started everything...

A.Mosquito.Or.Something [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 08:45:59 AM
Hot Tuna

kungfu jesus with a side of lime 2008-08-26 09:03:20 AM
There are some suspect spots on this list, but couldnt agree more with Cream taking the top spot.

mahavishnunj 2008-08-26 09:04:00 AM
how anyone can say 'fabulous thunderbirds' is beyond me. they are the worst ever. i thought black sabbath on there was weird too.

bigbottom 2008-08-26 09:09:36 AM
I was SHOCKED to see Savoy Brown was not included in this list. They may have been a late entry in the Brittish Blues scene but guess what? They're still at it today, at least Kim Simmonds is and he's better than evar!

JohnnyCanuck 2008-08-26 09:28:36 AM
White Stripes definitely deserve to be there.

Was very happy to see The Black Keys were not overlooked. "Attack & Release" is an excellent album.

OldManDownDRoad:

I mean this politely fark you all I like the White Stripes. They don't belong on the list however.

Oh blues-rock bands, not just blues.... was about rant about Muddy and BB not being here.

Almost made quite the ass of myself there.

mahavishnunj 2008-08-26 09:43:04 AM
oh yeah, this list fails bigtime because of no CACTUS.

altmulder 2008-08-26 09:47:13 AM

Hot Tuna

THIS

mud_shark 2008-08-26 09:54:14 AM
A.Mosquito.Or.Something: Hot Tuna

Jorma's too cool for this list (apparently - Tuna should really be very high on it)

And for those who said Blues Traveler, it was supposed to be the best blues rock bands of all time, not the ones with the most obnoxious harp.

mcongraff 2008-08-26 09:54:46 AM
How about all the great bands from outside the UK-US? Livin' Blues, Flower Travellin Band, Blues Creation, Pappo's Blues, Human Instinct, just to name a few.

the_farking_ledge [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 09:56:19 AM
What? No LOS LOBOS?

/fail

PizzaJedi81: List fails due to lack of Blues Traveler on it.

I was always amazed at the lack of blues in Blues Traveler.

/haven't heard everything from them.

craigdamage 2008-08-26 10:00:17 AM
....yeah,if Black Sabbath was on the list (only their first record is really "bluesy") then I suppose they could have put Jethro Tull on there too. Tull's first two are VERY blues.

Savoy Brown is also sadly forgotten.

Here is a really great blues band from ex-Jethro Tull guitarist Mick Abrahams:

is it possible to make a list that actually makes people happy. I thought compared to most list this one was ok. I did appreciate that it was all on one page. So we should be thankful for that.

/could god make a list so perfect that everyone on fark liked it?
//twatwaffle

The article was about BLUES-ROCK, not the blues.

No Roy Buchana? Feh.

fenianfark 2008-08-26 11:10:41 AM
No Blind Faith?

barneyfifesbullet 2008-08-26 11:14:40 AM
Canned Heat at 24? Boo. Should be higher.

Robin Trower at 6. Yay. Go dl some Trower. Check it out.

White Stipes should have been bounced for Pat Travers.

Deadfeznt [TotalFark] 2008-08-26 11:17:40 AM
BB King or White Stripes ummm let me think

Pentaxian 2008-08-26 11:35:59 AM
Maybe the list isn't in any particular order?

I once ended up six rows from the stage at Paul Butterfield concert. Except I was like five at the time and totally terrified. It was louder than anything else I ever heard and I probably had a contact high going at the same time. It took me a long time before I could listen to loud music again.

craigdamage 2008-08-26 11:51:46 AM
No Blind Faith?

Blind Faith?

the only slightly bluesy song on their sole record is "Had to Cry Today" -- the guitar/bass riff is a sorta variation on the old "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" blues riff.

The entire rest of that record is pure rock with some jazz flavor.

"Presence of the Lord"
"Can't Find My Way Home"
"Well Alright"
"Sea of Joy"
"Do What You Like"

.......this is the ENTIRE body of Blind Faith's work.

Sorry,no blues here.
