It's pretty shiatty when you take the time to show up to a state convention and the party insiders shut the whole thing down when it becomes clear your side has the majority.

In my opinion, this is much more of a story than the whole Michigan Florida thing.

I think I also capitalized the 'delegations' and 'heading,' like a real headline.

Wow I'm really concerned about John McCain and his supporters.

It looks like they failed to get the party unity they were looking for! What does that say about John McCain's ability to lead?

OH

wait

This is about the Republicans.

Sorry Farkers, go back to saying Obama is unelectable because of Hillary supporters. Carry on.

Argh2 2008-08-24 08:53:06 PM
So a couple of bitters can't accept losing, and Obama is sunk, but diehard Republicans can't even agree on basic representation without cutting each other's throats, and McPOW is going to win? Sure.

In April, riding high on a second-place showing in the Silver State, the grass-roots Paul supporters were well represented and well organized at the Republican state convention. Winning a key rule change, the Paul delegation began electing a majority slate for its candidate, when party officials dropped the gavel, turned out the lights and adjourned the convention indefinitely.

The state party leadership went on to appoint a slate of McCain delegates to the national convention by private conference call.

And that, boys and grrls, is why the Republicans are going to farking lose this election. Legally, and according to every last rule in the Republican rulebook, Ron Paul should have gotten those delegates. Not that he would have won, but he played the game by the rules. He did what he was supposed to do, played it straight and got screwed. But the powerz that be are absolutely terrified of the fiscal conservatives in the party. they DO NOT want that faction to regain even a small measure of control. They're so afraid of fiscal conservatives that they're willing to break their own rules in order to keep them out of the party leadership positions.

And that will indeed cost them this year.

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2008-08-24 08:58:08 PM
...Not that he would have won [the nomination], but...

Basically it goes like this. John McCain won the NV Caucus with Ron Paul coming in a close second. The Paulites, sour that they lost, forced a rule change to allow anyone who showed up at the convention to be given a vote. This changed the rules unfairly against McCain, so the state pary leadership cried foul and closed the convention. They then selected a slate of delegates by private vote and returned the election to the person who won it, John McCain.

Thats why the Paulites keep crying like a baby who was kicked out of a candy store.

Actually, Romney won the Nevada caucuses, and Paul was a distant second, with McCain close behind him in third place.

How did the Paul supporters force a rule change? Was the rule change made in accordance with the party rules for making rule changes? If so, seems like a valid rule change to me and one that should be abided by.

EngineerAU: How did the Paul supporters force a rule change? Was the rule change made in accordance with the party rules for making rule changes? If so, seems like a valid rule change to me and one that should be abided by.

This.

If Romney's camp sent X delegates with 51% of the caucus vote, and Paul's camp got Y delegates with 14% of the caucus, X should be more than three times larger than Y, and a rule change that helps Y shouldn't occur unless X is in on it too. Sounds to me like any rule change that occurred was legit and the Nevada GOP is full of douchebags. Not only did they shut down the convention that should have counted, they appointed delegates to the man who came in third place!

I'm 58 years old. I've been old enough to be politically conscious for some dozen general elections. This one is the biggest cluster-fark I've seen so far. Even '68 wasn't this bad. I can't friggin' wait until November. I just want the stupid to stop.

You're probably not going to show up in this thread again, but: How do you "force" a rule change? I, like EngineerAU, would expect that the party bylaws describe how rules are changed. If the Ron Paul crowd could engineer a rule change in their favor, well, that's how the game is played. "Fair" does not come into it.

Not that it's any skin of my nose, I'm just enjoying the spectacle.

FlyingLizardOfDoom: Basically it goes like this. John McCain won the NV Caucus with Ron Paul coming in a close second.

Umm, no. Mitt Romney won. Ron Paul came in a distant second (you got that part half right), and McCain came in a percentage point bellow Paul (a truly sad thing, in and of itself). So then at the convention, the state leadership was like "Well, Mitt is out of the race, and Paul is too, so we should give these votes to the third place finisher. Kinda a little pat on the back for putting in such a great effort. He IS a POW, you know." Anyway, Paul supporters were like "Whoa....that's not ok. Give them to our guy. Sure, he's not even running for the nomination anymore, but we're a bunch of loony whackjobs and insist that you give him his damn delegates! And the presidential nomination." So then the leadership is all like "You guys are a bunch of whackjobs, even by republican standards. Go DIAF". And the Ron Paul supporters are all "I'm rubber, you're glue..."

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is politics in America.

I certainly hope that the Republican party stars in an episode of "Ow, my balls! November, 2008." Their contempt for core values of financial responsibility, Constitutional freedom and liberty, and international restraint is astounding and must be soundly rejected.

I have personally spoken with some of the local Republican leadership. They seem to believe that a) Ron Paul supporters must support McCain simply because he calls himself a republican, and b) everyone else should be afraid of a black man, therefore c) the Republicans are certain to win the election - but if they don't, it will be 100% Ron Paul supporters' fault.

From where I sit, it looks like the Republicans a)got way too happy with the rules and money, broke the rules and stole the money, and are whistling away like nothing happened, b) presided over the biggest revocation of personal freedoms seen since World War II, c) have bankrupted this nation's goodwill and standing in the world, and may have d) bankrupted the nation itself. Remember Bush's promise to reduce the deficit by half? Not even close. Doubled it, in fact. The situation is getting worse, not better, and they really think they can hang on to power?

Of course, nobody ever really followed up on those Diebold voting machine issues, so maybe they can stay in office...

The problem this year is the plan to send two delegations of politicians. NO hookers! in Minnesota of all places! If I were them, I'd make sure to stay away from public restrooms. Who knows how they'll react?

FTFY

McCain barely pulled a percentage of the votes in the NV primary - while Paul had a strong second place finish behind Romney.

But somehow the GOP thought all their delegates should go to McCain, out of "party loyalty", despite the candidate having none himself.

I'd like to see the RNC halt during the middle of a floor vote, the chairman walk out without calling a recess, and then tell the delegates that they don't matter on national TV.
