Too many notes.

Pat Metheny is pretty freaking awesome, but he could prove that with a beat-up six-string, from a second-hand store.

shadowself 2008-08-24 09:56:05 PM
Neat, but gimmicky. 36 of those strings will always play the same notes - only the 6-string part has frets. 5 minutes is enough for me, I can only listen to one key for so long. Past that point it would be about as pleasing and diverse as bagpipes. I much prefer to see Metheny on standard guitar.

heh heh Pikasso.

Mmm...not necessarily. For one thing, they'll resonate to different harmonic frequencies. Another is that they can probably be retuned between songs. Besides, 36 fixed notes is still more than sufficient. How many fixed notes are on most mallet instruments? A lot of instrumental ranges are only about 3 octaves.

Pat Metheny is good,
but he is no Foghat.

mfaby 2008-08-24 10:23:48 PM
Pat Methany is the only guitarist worth talking about here.

The guy plays phenominally and composes some of the most melodic and
compelling music of the past 25 years.

Plus he has the added benefit of putting on muscially stunning concerts.

He makes that azzhat 'Buckethead' look more like
'Bucketfullofcrap'.

Here's the difference: Methany could play Buckethead, but
Buckethead couldn't play Methany

shadowself 2008-08-24 10:30:22 PM
But can this Methany guy play anything like Metheny?

meehaw [TotalFark] 2008-08-24 10:38:59 PM
I saw Metheny in Atlanta in 92. It was really a fun show. Halfway through, the power went out in the Roxy for about 45 minutes. The crowd started singing Pat Metheny songs, which was pretty amazing. He came out after about 15 minutes of this and gave us all rain checks for the following night. Then when the power came back on, he finished the set. I was thoroughly impressed with the whole thing.

He's a bit hit or miss with his albums, but there are some amazing ones through the years..."As falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls" is my favorite.

Just wanted to share.

A buddy of mine ran into him at Mannys when he was 8 years old. (my buddy, not PM)

He walked up to his hero and said somthing like "I really dig your music man". Metheny replied "Gimme a break kid, I'm tryin to shop".

To an 8 year old? How many fans could he have that are 8?

I agree with Pat Metheny. ;-)

I thought only John McLaughlin did the 'inordinate number of strings on a "guitar"' schtick...

*shrug*. Not my favorite Metheny, by any means. I'm more of a Martino/DiMeola fan m'self. And Grant Green. Papa loves him some Grant Green...

Hell, thirty-thousand Internets (or a TF sponsorship) to someone who can find me a Grant Green video that isn't the one with him jamming with Kessel and Burrell!

i think metheny is way better than buckethead but if you think he could play any buckethead solo the way that guy alt picks, sweeps, and taps youre nuts.

metheny is extremely hit or miss but hes in my top 5 easy. when hes playing straight jazz hes always amazing. his original stuff i like about half of, but when he picks up an acoustic you can bet your ass its going to be boring just like this clip. when he picks up that f*cking synth its abysmal. i do like that many stringed guitar though. i cant imagine what else youd play on it besides something like this.

sknight: I thought only John McLaughlin did the 'inordinate number of strings on a "guitar"' schtick...

playing a guitar with a single set of sympathetic strings for indian music. yeah, what a gimmick.

CoachBlack: I would hate to be the roadie that has to tune that monster

so much this.

I think "bucketfullofsemen" would be more appropriate, cuz of all the wanking he does onstage.

Still Life (Talking) is a personal favorite of mine. I understand that the Pikasso seems a little gimmicky but Metheny can bring the goods no matter what he plays. It's too bad that he gets grouped into that "easy listening" genre so often. Although I suppose it is relatively easy to listen to, there's more there if you're willing to listen hard.

Well to be fair, he was trying to shop.

Just from that tone, I bet that it's the guitar that he was playing during "As Falls Wichita." Is that where the numbers came from, that he says aloud?

I remember the first time I heard "As Falls Wichita" and I call the DJ up at my college radio station to tell her what a fantastic job she was doing of segues over the past 20 minutes. "No, that's the new Pat Metheney record" was her response. Knew I had to have it.

Lyle Mays FTW!

I looooooooooove it when people think because Buckethead sweeps and taps that makes him some sort of guitar freak.

Steve Hacket was tapping in the early days of Genesis, while Allan Holdsworth perfected and popularized (to a certain degree) sweep picking and did it MUCH better than the legions of "all tech, no substance" guitarists today.

Somebody mentioned that Buckethead couldn't play Methany. I disagree. He could, but it wouldn't sound anywhere near as good. Mucho respect for Pat Methany.

mahavishnunj 2008-08-25 02:45:44 AM
more people have spelled methenys name wrong in this thread than spelled it right(including the submitter. nice work). just throwing that out there.

I think the picasso guitar had allot to do with Pat and Linda Manzer (new window) talking about doing something fun and crazy.

There is a little of this guitar on one of my favorite of his, Beyond the Missouri sky.

Also, Pat would be the first to say that IT AIN'T A Competition. It is music.

Am a fan of Pat Metheny. I dig Still Life (Talking) and most resently my favorite was We Live Here (with To the End of the World being the absolute truth!)until..

I heard his first album, Bright Size Life. When I heard it I did not know it was made in '75-'76. It sounds as fresh and new as anything he puts out today. It made me start looking at his early ECM stuff (Offramp, ..Whichita).
