I refer to this as the Dicky Betts Syndrome. I'd rather our Rock Stars burn out from drugs and alcohol and call it a career when they sober up than have them push this crap out on us every few years.

I agree with you but I'm probably one of the few that likes everything before the Black album AND likes the Black album but doesn't like the rest.

And I hear there's a f*cking "Unforgiven 3" on the new album? There's no sequels in metal. Maybe if you're doing a double disk thing and you want to make two correlating songs, but seriously...what the f*ck?

You're under the impression that they're making music for you. As a musician, I can tell you that they aren't. Not that I don't understand where you're coming from -- I wish they'd make good music again too, but really, they're musicians. What are they supposed to do? Sit around on their porches whittling all day for the rest of their lives?

12 years? Bullshiat. What was he in rehab for in 2002/2003? He was drinking 6 years ago.

Oh, and it's been 20 years since Metallica has released a good metal album. The "black" album isn't metal, it's a warning to us all of the bands' slide into hard rock that was to come in the future.

I hate to say that I agree, when they quit being who they are they loose the edge. I never liked Metallica but I see the same thing with my favorite artist Trent. He still puts on a fantastic show but the new music lacks the soul of the older drug fueled music.

kab 2008-08-24 02:29:44 PM
Eh.

What the band should have done is split up for a bit, and went in whatever different directions they wanted to.

As for them changing their style... I haven't been playing nearly as long as them, and I've gotten tired, far quicker, of playing the same sort of music.

Throwing touring, and playing the same goddamn song night after night, and I'm sure that feeling gets a bit accelerated. (How sick must they be of "Whiplash", for example).

I'm amazed at bands that DON'T change much. The Stones, AC/DC, hell, even a guy like King Diamond... he's been basically doing the same thing his whole career. I'd have hung it up by now.

Win.

I'm not a big fan of St. Anger, but I enjoy all of their albums. Their latest sound is just different.

I have to admit, though -- the two previews off Death Magnetic are extremely bland.

3) Lars Ulrich and I have never conversed so I don't know if I hate him or not.

4) I already had their music on disc plus I subscribe to Napster; so no need to illegally download it.

kab: I'm amazed at bands that DON'T change much. The Stones, AC/DC, hell, even a guy like King Diamond... he's been basically doing the same thing his whole career. I'd have hung it up by now.

This. Lars is quoted in a mid-90s RS article somewhere saying something to the effect of, "People tell me they want to hear another 'Master of Puppets' and I'm like, 'We already did that album'." Interesting bands grow and change. The only noticeable difference between this upcoming AC/DC album and their first 15 is going to be how increasingly shrill Brian Johnson's voice has gotten. That's not enough for me to look forward to.

I don't hold them changing their style against them. I hold them changing their style to something more commercial for the sole purpose of selling more records against them. Some of my favorite bands have changed their sound over the years, and I'm fine with that -- even if I don't like their new direction. But when they dumb down their sound for the purpose of selling more records, that I have a problem with.

I'd hardly call St. Anger "dumbing" down. Say what you will about that album, but it was hardly created to sell and make money. Ditto on much of the material on Load and Reload; songs like Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn aren't built for radio.

What is it you think recording artists do? They.....

...sell records. Don't get confused about the "integrity" of the music, or any other such crap. They're musicians. Not heroes, not icons, not philosophers, musicians.

Anything they made a video for was built for radio (with the exception of the original video for "One"). And the dumbed-down album I was referring to was the Black album. By the time Load, Reload, and St. Anger came out, their fanbase was big enough that they could've released crap and it would have sold. Oh wait, they did.

Thankfully, some musicians do have integrity and make good music that doesn't appeal to the lowest common denominator, even though that means they settle for less money in their pockets. Metallica sadly isn't one of those bands.

What if what you call music with integrity is complete and utter crap to me?

This is the problem with making moral judgments about music, the appreciation of which is something that is highly subjective.

Then you're a moran with little musical understanding or taste?

This is the problem with making moral judgments about music, the appreciation of which is something that is highly subjective.

The problem is that you've already pre-supposed that your appreciation of music is equivalent to whether you like it or not. It is possible to say "it's great music but I don't like it" or "it's not great music but I like it". Until you understand this, then I can see you could think it's a problem.

I really don't see how that changes anything. A sequel is a sequel, regardless of name.

They're still sequels, period. You said there are "no sequels" in metal. Read the lyrics to those songs, they name drop. It's no more or less gimmicky than what Metallica is doing.

Besides, is it really *that* big of a deal to people? I mean, a farking song title? Really?
