This article is FILLED with flame fodder - example: "Cynthia McKinney has been described by political-prisoner and internationally-renowned journalist, Mumia Abu Jamal, as "bold," "outspoken," and a "woman of substance." ".

Somebody remind me to bring popcorn back here when this posts.

It's sort of funny that folks who only a short time ago were up in arms about McKinney are going to be defending her simply because she will represent a tiny percentage to split the vote.

In this thread even, folks who piled on invective and bile not too long ago on McKinney will be running with the talking points barrage that will attempt to transform her into a crusader.

We'll join Jim downstream...

I don't know about "bold" or "outspoken," but she does have a mean left hook.

Not everyone who thought then and still think Ms. McKinney is a nut job is going to come out with talking points to defend her right to run for president. Does she have the right? yes, should any sane individual consider voting for her, no. The people who might vote for Ms. McKinney probably were not going to vote for an "establishment" candidate in the first place.

Shaggy_C 2008-08-24 03:40:52 PM
I'm no fan of McKinney, though I encourage all civil libertarians to look closely at the Green Party platform when making their choices. I personally don't think I can stomach voting for any more Republicrats this year aside from Oamba at the top.

Barr/McKinney ticket would be a super epic wtf. People would defenestrate themselves merely thinking about the implications.
If only there were more than 5 people in the world that really, really care.

flucto: internationally-renowned journalist, Mumia Abu Jamal

What the fark.

People toss around this "internationally-renowned journalist" term like its butter on popcorn.

Hunter S. Thompson was an internationally renowned journalist and author. Abu-Jamal is a man famous because he's become the figurehead for shifty trials in the States.

In fifty years, people will still be learning about Thompson and true heroes of the press like the brave souls who broke the Watergate scandal. In fifty years, Abu-Jamal will be dead, buried and forgotten.

I agree. Vote Green for downballot (and only downballot). McKinney is a kook, as she always proves when she goes on Maher's show. There are much better mouthpieces for the GP than her, and it's a shame she's going to get so much attention this year.

Thank god we have bob barr on the right to balance out the morons on the left who seem determined to place their own egos in front of what is best for this country.

Seriously, at this point anyone doing anything that could even remotely help McCain win and ensure another 4 years of a Republican presidency needs to be smacked. Hard.

Also, I'm not trying to conflate Barr with Nader and McKinney, because Barr appears to be head and shoulders above either of those two.

I think the problem is that the party is made up primarily of people who are, shall we say, extremist, in their views. So they purposely alienate themselves by putting up someone that 90% of the population would never, ever vote for. Like the Libertarians, they seem to enjoy their marginalization as a point of pride. This is bad because there are many, many people who agree with a lot of their platform but won't even consider them because of crap like this. Oh, well. 2012 will be different!

I like the claim that if John McCain is elected he's going to appoint a supreme court that brings back Jim Crow laws.

Yeah he's an enourmous dick, but not a celestial dick.

The government does, has, and will continue to suck into the forseeable future. Destroying it by electing morons into power actually has a chance of working, unlike every other "reform" or "change" plan.

Well, not now that the general hypocrisy of it has been laid out--which was sort of the point of the post...

Because they could never win! Don't you remember that from '92? Ross Perot could never win! Voting for him was throwing your vote away! The only reason to vote for someone other than D or R is to protest!

/Go out and register as many people as you can

I think the logic behind it is that McCain's supreme court will do away with a lot of legislation that provides assistance for minorities, and without these safety nets in place we reach levels of inequality between blacks and whites that are akin to the Jim Crow times.

Not saying I agree with it, but I think that's the rationale.

OK, I'm sorry if this sounds dumb, but is Bob Barr in a position to get a decent percentage of the vote (compared to usual third party)? Is it because the right really doesn't like McCain, or is Barr a politician that can do more than fill a seat? I keep hearing that he could steal votes from McCain.

Well, there are two stories on the site about Hillary, one on Biden, and another on Caroline Kennedy (all with pics).

From what I can tell, it's the web version of a newspaper in Harlem.

Why does a black newspaper in Harlem = reverse Stormfront?
/Unless, by "opposite" you meant "sane and relevant."

Vote for who you want to. I would have joined the Green Party this year, but I absolutely cannot stand Cynthia McKinney. I'll vote for Obama, unless McCain chooses Romney. I'll have to think a bit more over my vote if he does that.

artifishy 2008-08-24 05:11:51 PM
I am not against McKinney because (as many people say) she is a nut. I am against her because I don't think she has the temperament for true diplomacy. It is a matter of making your opponent thinking they are getting a better deal while you quietly get the upper hand. Obama as a lawyer who crawled his way up, I think has it. McCain as a person who fell upwards and is known to have a bad temper, I think does not. When you get hot-headed in chess, you always lose.

To those who think I believe Obama is the Messiah, no I don't. My Messiah is Dennis Kucinich, but I realize that American politics is evolutionary progress (on a near geologic scale), and no longer revolutionary.

you're going to vote obama over mccain UNLESS mccain chooses mccain?

it would be near impossible to break down that voting logic tree

Bush has spend zero days in congress. Although I would agree that he had no qualifications to be president, how does working in congress prepare you to be president, over, say being a constitutional lawyer or successful head of a corporation or teacher of international law or a truck driver that has shown the knowledge and skill set to lead?

Not at all. People can be great presidents just by having real world experiences and understanding what an average Joe goes through to take care of their family and people can be awful presidents who have spent all their time in the lofty towers of politics.

What Would Whoopty Do [TotalFark] 2008-08-24 08:01:21 PM
I was talking with some friends of mine about his at a bar the other night. One was a McCain supporter who can't vote because he's on probation, or some such thing. The other, despite usually being rational, plans to vote for McKinney under the premise that if the Greens get 5% they achieve major party status. Furthermore, while conceding that 5% is unlikely, he said it's not throwing his vote away because voting Obama or McCain is throwing it away, if you don't truly support them on the issues. Then we argued a bit and got drunker. The discussion ended when this oogle with a quartz crystal tied around his neck toting a framepack strolls up and intruduces himself. He came from Florida to protest at the RNC. I asked what he was protesting and he said "High gas prices, and a bad economy". He probably doesn't even have a job or a car. He then proceeds to tell racist jokes, and that he's not "PC" so it's cool. So, it must be OK if one of the local gangsters doesn't get your "joke" and cracks your skull, because he's not "PC" either. I know this one asshat doesn't represent the whole "movement", but he pretty much caused me to lose what little respect I had for his brand of protester. I just don't foresee any good coming from this protest. On the contrary, I think it serves to galvanize peoples' prejudices. Their politics are just so divisive and lacking in any common goals, except blaming the Republican party for everything. It's enough to make my head assplode!

/end rant
