I think that maturity is a curve; I was much more mature when I
was a younger, more inexperienced person.

Then I discovered Fark, and well... look at me now.

FTFA: People who are less mature tend to engage in the following habits:

1. Black-and-white thinking with no gray area.

2. Inability to see the world from the perspective of others.

3. Low empathy.

4. Low tolerance for painful emotions.

5. Low tolerance for differences.

6. Lack of insight into themselves and others.

Good God, that means I'm more like, 8 years old then.

What causes this kind of immaturity and how can I deal with it?

Step 1: Stop obsessing over how other people live their lives.

Maybe it's the contrast of the episode of "Intervention" I just watched, but calling someone "sparkles" in a thread about maturity got far more giggles out of me than it probably deserves.

Of course, I've generally found when a woman says this, it means "You don't act like my daddy" or "I wanted you to do something unpleasant but you told me to deal with it myself".

/"You're so immature!"

From that definition, it really sounds like maturity is a bad thing. Those same attributes tend to apply to engineers and scientists. The author of this article is just trying to fight an inferiority complex by calling other people immature.

If acting like a child is inappropriate at work, then why send us to school when we are children, or wasn't I supposed to see that.

Crow The Robot 2008-08-24 04:08:52 PM
For the most part I have seen maturity correlated with life experience which can or can not be correlated with how many years a person has been living; it really boils down to the person. En masse, I do agree that older age correlates with more maturity but does not necessarily cause it; similar to other things, see Freakonomics. A problem is many people fail to see past this and assume older age necessitates more maturity. How it works in practice: Crow T. Robot would like to befriend and/or date more mature women. Now it's very hard to find a mature woman who doesn't believe in the possibility for a mature person at a young age.

Q: I find people's emotional reactions hard to understand. Any tricks for reading people better?

A: Yes, get to know yourself deeply and everyone else will be crystal clear.

Dear god, who pays this woman to write such crap advice? "understanding yourself" isn't going to help you deal with irrational people who let their emotions affect them in weird ways.

WTF?

That's about the worst piece of advice I've ever seen. The older I get and the more deeply I understand myself the more baffling the behavior and reactions of almost everyone else seems to be.

If you're a weirdo, getting to know your weirdo-self better isn't going to help you with understanding the more normal-ish people.

"most adults never reach the more advanced stages of human development."

serial_crusher: Dear god, who pays this woman to write such crap advice? "understanding yourself" isn't going to help you deal with irrational people who let their emotions affect them in weird ways.

Some people are genuinely unaware of their own emotions.
