Well, how many big names do they have left to use for keynote speakers at Republican fund-raising dinners who haven't been indicted and resigned in scandal?

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2008-08-24 12:11:57 PM
And this is why the Republican party will continue to falter. Tom Delay is such a perfect representation of why the congressional Republicans went steeply downhill after they forced out Newt.
Once they disavow Delay, things will turn around for them.

No love for Delay, but why has it been about two years after the indictment and still no trial?

Tr0mBoNe [TotalFark] 2008-08-24 01:27:57 PM
Makes total sense to me. He's a known name and knows all the proper talking points. He'd be a good draw for the fundies etc. Smrt move.

Seems they indicated on a non-existing law or post-dated the law.

Well, if you still call yourself a Republican, you're probably just as immoral as Tom Delay.

When do they start charging the Republican leadership under the RICO statute? They are the very definition of a "continuing criminal conspiracy."

Delay, North, Libby.

Why is it when people lie, cheat and steal for the Republicans they get treated as heroes?

Cyborg77 2008-08-24 02:14:14 PM
Republicans still love Tom "The Hammer" DeLay, who they seem to view as some sort of martyr that was brought down by the overzealous liberals. I mean all the guy did was launder some money, rig some elections and lie about it to government officials. Its not like hes a criminal.

As for why he hasn't been indicted, I think the prosecutors might actually be doing something very clever: Waiting till Bush is out of office so he can't just pardon him or commute his sentence like he did with Scooter Libby. I'm eagerly waiting to see how many federal indictments are filed on Jan. 21, 2009.

What they're doing to Tom Delay is worse than what they did in Salem, Massachusetts.

Can't Bush pardon him without pending charges?

They went all the way to the Texas Supreme Court over whether or not the charge about conspiracy to violate election law should stand or not.

Now that that issue is resolved the case should be able to push forward.

Did they burn him at the stake? Got a video of it? You could put it on Pay-per-view!

Bucky Katt: Why would anyone pay to see this washed up douchebag?

One DeLay's and Abramoff's unindicted co-conspirators, Ralph Reed, has been busy getting money for John McCain too. Old Jack would be out there behind the scenes too if he hadn't wound up in prison and rolled over on the GOP big-wigs. They'll keep these guys around as long as they can bring in the money and they don't need a scapegoat.

As for why people pay to see DeLay speak: he wears the cross and hates all of the same things religious conservatives hate. Details like how DeLay essentially lobbied for sweatshop owners in US territories that forced abortions on their workers while he was in congress aren't the kinds of things the religious right wants to know about so they don't know about it. He talks a good game to people whose whole lives are about suspending disbelief and common sense. Ralf Reed played the bible crowd for fools with the Indian casino thing with Abramoff and they'll love him forever (as long as he doesn't get caught sucking a cock).

He's not. He has to be convicted first.

As for why he hasn't been indicted [sic, you mean 'convicted'?], I think the prosecutors might actually be doing something very clever: Waiting till Bush is out of office so he can't just pardon him or commute his sentence like he did with Scooter Libby.

You have to convict him first and that won't happen. Your theory fails anyway, because Bush could pardon him at any time even before he is convicted if he wanted to. And since Bush has pardoned fewer of his friends than Clinton did I don't think Bush will do that.

For whatever reason, a lot of Republican activists still love Tom DeLay. I don't know why, but they do. I happened to be one of the ones who didn't like him when he wasn't indicted, and my opinion hasn't changed.

Bush's term isn't over yet. Remember the wave of Clinton pardons didn't come till the end.

Delay's a scum bag regardless of his criminal conduct though. Wasn't he the one who got everyone all worked up about Terri Schaivo? That shiat nearly turned my dad off the Republican party, it was farking bad. He also, IIRC, criticized the Supreme Court for striking down sodomy laws. He's a douche.

Bush could grant him amnesty, but he can't pardon him until he has been convicted.

Nah, I'm just far too trusting of dictionary definitions.

"n. One that has committed or been legally convicted of a crime."

And since there are special words for people who've been convicted (like, oh, say, "convict") I don't define "criminal" as narrowly as you do.

/But can I borrow the machete anyway?

What's Tom DeLay up to these days, after being indicted and resigning in scandal?

You mean after absolutely nothing became of anything what so ever because there was nothing to it to begin with?

I hear he's doing fine, what with his name being cleared and his life being totally vindicated and such.

And so far he has only been suspected of committing a crime. You can prove that assertation with a guilty verdict in a court or a confession. Libel and slander laws (for non-public persons anyway) still say someone has to be convicted of a crime before you can label him/her a criminal.
