Hundreds of disaffected Democrats from around the country plan to converge in the Mile High City to hold news conferences, protests, and vigils, threatening the party's ability to present a united front against Republican John McCain.

Hundreds? The last PUMA convention couldn't scrap up 250 people. Unfortunately, the MSM will probably spend more airtime on the 50 or so deadenders outside the convention then they will on the thousands inside.

GaryPDX [TotalFark] 2008-08-24 10:23:58 AM
I don't think we'll see the full effect of the dissension until election day. I believe many will show their resentment either by staying home or voting for McCain. Mostly staying home in quiet protest. These folks are past trying to convince anyone, they'll just keep quiet and show it in the election results. Only a handful of loud mouths from here on out.

Just an opinion.

Millions? If they break more than 100, I'm willing to bet $10 that McCain supporters will be there to pad those numbers.

Hey, if you are going to have a sure-fire train wreck, you might as well film it.

Very few I think. I believe the vast majority will just quietly stay home. They've been trying to poll these 18 million people and 20% are actually saying they won't and another 20% are dodging the question as undecided. I'm just saying there's really no way to measure the full effect. Much will depend on what happens in Denver this week.

Do they really think that they can change anything by a public display of dissatisfaction? Where do they think they are? China?

Really though, it's done and dusted, it's like going out now and protesting against declaring war on Iraq. It's done, get over it.

Also how can so many people actually like Hillary to the point where they'd throw their own country to another 4 years of Republican rule just to piss off the guy she lost to?

They'll never be happy. They HATE that Obama beat her. In their mids, they probably believe that he was spitting on women's lib. Even if Obama picked her as VP, they will turn that around by going: 'He's just doing that because he feels sorry for her. Typical man, doesn't think women can get there own their own power and has to help them.' or 'He's just doing that so she cannot take her rightful position from him. He is forcing her to take it, which is like abuse.'

Hell, even if he bowwed out and gave her the position, they would STILL be pissed off.

newmoonpuppyhead 2008-08-24 11:15:45 AM
Why Hillary doesn't shut them down is beyond me. She wants to show party unity? I'm seriously doubting that.

And they are also convinced that he stole the nomination from her. The "fuzzy math" you have to use to say that she won the popular vote (ignore caucuses, pretend he had absolutely no support in Michigan, etc.) all makes perfect sense to them.

I was remarking in a thread yesterday that I have a lesbian friend who falls in that category.

They are also hanging onto the hope that sometime before the end of the convention that every single one of the superdelegates will come to their senses and vote for Hillary, thus awarding her the nomination.

Hillary and her people need to realize that for someone of her
overweening ambition, a Senate seat is a much better path to true
power than the Presidency......

Even if Hillary were to tell them to knock it off, they wouldn't, because they would then believe that she's bowing to political pressure from the male dominated political scene and that she secretly wants them to continue the fight.

They're about as rabid as the Flat Earthers.

It just happens that with these flakes, it's more amusing than scary.

I'll bet it'll be hilarious when the local cops show up and start beating the tar outta these folks. They've got a warehouse of Gitmo-eque cages already set up and are expecting to do some heavy business during the convention.

But will they poop in their hands and throw it at you?

Lawnchair 2008-08-24 12:52:03 PM
Hillary has exactly zero power to stop them. None at all.

Obama probably is willing to let them kvetch. The Harriet Christian and friends demonstrations at the Rules Committee were a painful embarrassment to moderate Clinton-supporting Democrats, including my Hillary-supporting mother. She finally became a reluctant Obama supporter that day.

I'm serious too - don't mouth off to anyone wearing a uniform in Denver during the convention 'cause they'll toss your ass in jail. I think we'll see some pretty hardcore responses to even minor disruptions, even legitimate opposition is going to find it difficult to be seen and heard.

A secret ballot means never having to say you're sorry. They know that if it's a close Obama loss and if there's any indication that Hillary supporters are responsible, Hillary's career is finished. The Democratic Party can't handle another 2000-like failure without imploding and the Cheesecake Brigade won't be the ones who make that happen.

The influence and numbers of the cheesecake brigade is vastly over represented by the media who is salivating over a 'Democrats Divided' story.

Fact is, it's the Republicans who are more divided. It's the religious right who are the problem. They don't like McCain, they don't like Romney, and they really don't like Lieberman or Ridge. And if McCain appeases them and picks Huckabee, the fiscal conservatives are going to bail.

moothemagiccow 2008-08-24 01:18:10 PM
Clinton will be there. What are the chances she'll actually go out and talk to these psychos? If so, what are the chances they'll listen?

Corvus 2008-08-24 01:18:57 PM
I think those on the right need to be more concerned that those who consider John McCain a RINO will be staying home or voting for Obama. I already know of some very right wing republican's voting for Obama because they hate John McCain from the 2000 elections.

Seabon: And if McCain appeases them and picks Huckabee, the fiscal conservatives are going to bail.

The fiscal conservative have ALREADY bailed. Where do you think Bob Barr got his supporters from?

The only thing that could have united the Republicans behind McCain was the threat of a Hillary white house. That would have forced the social and fiscal conservatives to work together. But without the threat of an external enemy to unite them, the flaws inherent to the Republican party will prevent them from making any sort of real showing in the elections this year.

The fact that much of the older Republican voters have this weird 'with me or against me' attitude isn't helping matters either. Especially since the younger conservatives can do the math and realize just how much the long term policies of the Bush adminstration are really going to cost us.

Diogenes [TotalFark] 2008-08-24 01:19:48 PM
While many Clinton delegates say they will back Obama and do not intend to embarrass him, grass-roots activists planning protests outside the convention hope to disrupt the sense of unity party leaders are cultivating.

Loyalty to the party, its ideas, and its goals loses to loyalty to the vag.

"We know she's not going to win, but this is extremely symbolic for me to cast a ballot for a woman for president," Therese Murray, president of the Massachusetts state Senate and a prominent Clinton supporter, said, adding that she plans to throw her support to Obama after that.

Completely oblivious, or completely unconcerned, that this little show of "symbolism" (read: histrionics) is completely self-defeating. No one is unaware at how far Hillary went as a woman.

Some, however, are concerned the roll call could send a message of fractiousness and could embarrass delegates - particularly members of Congress - by forcing them to choose between supporting Clinton and backing their party's nominee.

And all for what? Your personal satisfaction? How farking selfish. Thank you for exemplifying sexist stereotypes. You scored a big one for womyn.

Meanwhile, there will be a 15,000 strong showing for Ron Paul outside the Republican Convention, which won't garner even a local TV crew, while the 2,000 people inside sit quietly and get told who will be losing the race for them this year, while being shown on national TV like its the Super Bowl.

To whom did Rupert Murdoch donate?

You are definately correct that both parties have thier problems with the various factions within each party. Normally, it is folks convictions to different issues, but here in Obama's case, it is folks assoication with a primary candidate and their reluctance to acknowledge that she lost.

IMO, this is very strange for a party that should be pretty unified after 8 years of Bush.

Get them to consider Bob Barr instead. They don't have to totally betray their ideals just because they don't like McCain.

Bob Barr - A board member for the NRA, and a lawyer who's worked with the ACLU - should be much closer to what former Republicans want than Obama.

You're right. What I meant by 'fiscal conservatives' is the cut-taxes-at-all-costs crowd. I know they're not fiscal conservatives, my mistake.
