On the other hand I live in (one of the most modern) parts of china and have seen culturally ingrained corruption at it's worst. First hand. It just gets bigger and broader with gov't and company officials. Corruption is a very, very serious problem in many (varying degrees) Asian nations. Where does it stop? I looked up "death with a two-year reprieve" on google to see what I got and I found an article about a Chinese guy who tortured his girlfriend almost to death and received a death sentence. They appealed because he claimed mental illness and he was granted "leniency", meaning a two year stay of execution. While this is a poor example in general due to the crime the sentencing concept still invites the question "what the fark is wrong with China?"

I think ultimately, the primary issue is lost taxes to the government. You stole from a company, which means less taxes to the government, and not paying taxes is a capital offense.

I doubt they despise corruption in general, just the kind that affects the government's income negatively.

My very good friends opened a bar in asia. It was successful, so they opened a bigger one. Right off the bat bribes had to be paid to the chief gang bangers, in a manner that struck me as official. It's just the way things were. We all saw it wasn't controllable and they sold out of the place.

The last night the club was open 15 guys rolled up with baseball bats and took the place out. If it was made of glass, plastic or wood it was broken. I went to put my beer down on a table and the table wasn't there anymore. I got the fark out in seconds.

So, the cops roll up as the hoods are still inside destroying the place. The gang manager comes out, shakes the lead cops hand, walks into the place with him. The cop askes the owner "do you want to press charges?" as all the gang bangers are standing around the owner leering at him. Guy says no, Gangster shakes hands with cop, they all leave.

Owner just sat there, stoic, like he wanted to cry but knew better. place never opened again.
