On the one hand, this kid is a tremendous badass, and I'd like to either buy him a beer in 9 years, or raise enough money that he can get a tremendously cool prosthesis now.

On the other hand (er, sorry...) who thinks "Hmm, there's a vicious predator on the other side of this lake. One that's equally comfortable in land or water. Let's throw sticks at it, then go swimming anyway!"

I took a trip down to the Okefenokee swamp last year and saw lots of gators sunning themselves. Just sitting there with nothing but eyes and snout showing, you could still feel the potential for great violence. At one point a six-foot one was swimming in front of our boat, and the guide made a point of staying well back. The thought of going swimming near one of those things gives me a bad case of the heebie-jeebies.

It's just that you're psychologically conditioned to fear gators. C'mon. They're just sitting there. Maybe he'll save his allowance and get robot legs to match.

Skail [TotalFark] 2008-08-24 09:49:35 AM
Witnessing the attack, his friends ran to get help while Devin, with only one arm, swam to shore. "I thought I still had my arm," he said, "and I looked and I was like, 'Oh, man.' "

You can bet I would've been saying a lot more than "oh, man." With a lot more profanity and pants-soiling.

Skail [TotalFark] 2008-08-24 09:52:00 AM
Said that he misses playing his PS3, too. Would be cool if someone in his area took up a collection and bought him a Wii. I understand that for a kid that age, the Nintendo probably isn't as cool, but it is something most people can play with one hand. Even Mario Kart. :D

Maybe I'm stupid. Maybe I should have learned better by now. But I continue to be amazed at the incredible number of articles in which one of the main items of interest is how something looks, yet run without photos. I can kind of understand it in a print article, maybe, if space if at a premium. But are we running out of internet room or something?

I WANT TO SEEE THE ROBOT ARM!!!!!! WHAAAAA!!!!

I often considered the pros and cons of losing a limb when I was younger. Cons: LOSING A LIMB! Pros: GETTING A BETTER ONE! still a tough decision.

/Taunting and then swimming with a gator was never an anticipated way to get said badass limb.

Cool.

I've often said if I ever lose a leg, I'm getting a wooden peg instead of a plastic foot, but robot arm beats that.

"GIVE ME AN ARM THAT LOOKS LIKE THE TERMINATOR"

The kid is pure win. He took a look at the situation, and instead of being scared like a normal 12 year old, he took a big stick Teddy R style and smacked it upside the head.

Only thing that scared me about losing an arm/hand would be the inability to play video games and use a computer, since its my livelihood.

They are generally afraid of people (for obvious reasons), and many are actually like park squirrels in that they've learned to beg.

But yeah, I always try to assume the possibility that something could click in that ancient reptile brain when its staring at my meaty leg.

Still, it would have been better if the alligator had bitten off the kid's gonads, and the kid said he wanted real brass balls.

The kid would be just as badass and awesome, but would also be unable to reproduce.

That is absolutely farking nuts.

Its flooring when you think how far we have come from a century ago, when losing your arm meant slamming a shot of whiskey, putting a wooden dowel in your mouth, and having it hacked off with a dirty saw before wrapping the stump in a towel.

Too bad he didn't get a robot brain, maybe he'd have known not to swim with alligators when he'd been throwing sticks at them. Or any other time for that matter.

Alligators are surprisingly fast. He's actually quite lucky that the thing tore off his arm, it pulled him under because it was trying to drown him.

"I'll keep an eye on it and swim away if it comes near me" is not a smart way to deal with gators, especially angry ones.

The average Farker only has the use of one hand for typing and using the mouse anyway - a lot of them still work in IT and computing.

Catbunny 2008-08-24 11:02:05 AM
Considering he hasn't got the sense not to swim in water where there is an alligator that has recently had rocks and stick thrown at it (by him and his friends no less), I get the feeling he is going to be losing a few more limbs in the future.

Bigjohn3592 2008-08-24 11:02:49 AM
Devin:

Here's what ya do. You get some of those metal spring clips that they use around workbenches to hold tools. You screw a couple sets of those to your new arm. Clip a couple pens on there, then a leatherman multi tool, and a mini-mag lite. Fill the sucker out with usefull shiny metal stuff, not soome silly foam.

Then you can really pimp that thing out with some light-wire and add a mount for your I-pod.

/that's what I'd do.
//That and impress chicks by reaching into fire with the new arm, etc...
