Call me nutty, but I don't think that anyone who was planning on voting on the single issue of gun rights would have been lining up to vote for Obama even if he had selected the rotting corpse of Charlton Heston as his running mate.

My Liver Hurts: Call me nutty, but I don't think that anyone who was planning on voting on the single issue of gun rights would have been lining up to vote for Obama even if he had selected the rotting corpse of Charlton Heston as his running mate.

Precisely. The NRA is so effective at conflating Democrats with gun-grabbing that it's nearly impossible to convince some voters otherwise. Democrats taking your guns is somewhere along the lines of forcing good Christians to marry peacocks, but in their minds, it's a foregone conclusion if those goddam liberals ever get power again.

Gun control is one of the biggest red herring non-issues, and it has been expertly exploited.

Y'know, the single most left-wing --extremely liberal -- guy I know, a staunch Kucinich supporter to this day, a guy who makes even the most ardent liberal Obama supporter look downright Republican by comparison is also a member of the NRA.

You never answered the question I asked you last time you said this, back in thread 3803185.

"Gary, question for you.

If you think the government is so inept that you don't trust them to run anything, as shown by your opinions in past threads, what makes you think they could organize enough to disarm the entire country, especially when there's so many people who feel as strongly about keeping their guns as you do? It seems kind of like a double standard, like the government can't to jack squat unless it's doing it against you.

Raiden333: they could organize enough to disarm the entire country

If there is one thing our government is good at doing, it is arresting people and putting them in prison.

I think it is a little bit silly to worry about right now, but there is no doubt we are slowly turning into a police state. Warrantless searches, red-light cameras, "drunk driving" checkpoints, unregulated no-fly terror black lists. Guns are our last line of defense against a government that ignores the rules that it is supposed to operate under.

The 2nd Amendment is the People's enforcement clause of the Constitution. We must always stay vigilant to the Constitution. They are tools of a free people. I've never seen the government run anything efficiently and if given the opportunity, tyranny will rear it's ugly head. That old pesky "power corrupts" thingy. There's no valid or remotely justifiable reason to disarm or otherwise restrict law abiding citizens from having arms.

GaryPDX: The 2nd Amendment

The 2nd Amendment is vastly over exaggerated and over cited for wrong reasons. It was not intended to mean "Own 70,000 guns and shoot anyone who demands a single safety measure."

You're right, it's not that specific. It was intended to mean "own however many guns you want and be able to use them"

GaryPDX: I've never seen the government run anything efficiently

Reminds me of The Life of Brian:

All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

"Small government" is the greatest trick the Republicans ever pulled over on the middle class. The real neo-cons, not the poseurs in office, really do want small government. That way they can privatize and start charging for EVERYTHING.

Imagine the beauty: Every single road: a toll road. Every school: private. Every library: a Barnes and Noble. No public anything.

Then they can point at all the people struggling and say "guess they're not good enough. No worries, we can employ them to do our manual labor. And they can even live on the premises. And instead, paying, maybe we can just take care of them."

Sound familiar?

INTERTRON 2008-08-23 07:06:09 PM
Etchy333: That way they can privatize and start charging for EVERYTHING.

Yeah, because the government doesn't already charge the taxpayers for EVERYTHING, and it's impossible for government officials to enrich themselves the way things are now, with a large government.

slobarnuts 2008-08-23 07:09:47 PM
Etchy333: Sound familiar?

What you describe is not Neo-con.

You describe Ayn Rand.

Ayn Rand scares neo-cons.

Ayn Rand should scare everybody. People who like Ayn Rand are

Yup.

Also, McCain's pro-choice, pro-environment, gay friendly BFF Joe Lieberman got an "F" from the NRA, too...and he's speaking at the GOP convention and is being considered for a VP slot.

Will the red states go to Bob Barr?

um, so why aren't you so ardent in your support of other Constitutional guarantees? You only ever defend your guns, but you are always fine with the other rights being tossed out. Support the Constitution, not just the one amendment you like.

Yes, because we should be enslaved to what the friggin' NRA wants. As previously said, people who vote on guns weren't voting for Obama anyway, so fark it. Our very own Farker Obama Gonna Take My Guns!!!!!11 is proof enough of that.

Exactly. VP is pretty much a step down in power from his senior Senate position... unless something happens to Obama.

My point was about the irrelevance of red states, like those mentioned in the headline. If anyone made that connection between gun-toting rednecks and red states, it was the submitter.

...By the end of 2004, George W. Bush had issued 108 signing statements containing 505 constitutional challenges. As of January 30, 2008, he had signed 157 signing statements challenging over 1,100 provisions of federal law.
