Buckethead can play so many styles.
He can shred Jason Becker style and also play a silky solo where he can shape one note so elegantly it makes me weep.

That rocked. It took me a while to warm up to Buckethead's music but the more I hear it the more I like it.

Am I missing something? Hendrix didn't write that song. Unless you're attributing the general idea of writing good guitar-based songs to him, and no one can ever come close or do better forever and ever amen.

In which case, ok. You must be fun at parties.

Considering the recent guitarist threads, I was amused by the first person listed as one of his influences.

I caught Primus at Ozzfest one year ('99?) and Buckethead played guitar with them. They did a bunch of stuff from "Sailing the Seas of Cheese". It was a pretty incredible set.

Without sounding snarky, can you name anyone with more technical prowess and more all-around ability? Buckethead plays Page better than Jimmy could ever hope to, he runs circles around Hendrix (like that would be hard), has better tone and taste than Clapton and can shred better than any of his peers. Indeed, the solo is good, but i like the studio version better.

Uhng, couldn't take much more than about 1 minute, which was probably the first 14 notes, played over and over. When his hands weren't doing the same things that the music was, I left, it was probably just a sync problem, but that, and the bucket,...

CoachBlack 2008-08-23 09:00:39 PM
I am not much of a Buckethead fan, but that was awesome, and the solo was epic, but I still have no soul.

/traded my soul for guitar lessons

kab 2008-08-23 09:01:43 PM
I guess I can't.

Guthrie Govan is more listenable to me, has better phrasing, and better writing (which, again, is limited here, as he too is very guitar-centric at this point), and seems capable of playing damn near anything.

Like this little piece:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yPEewaalik

But that's me. I think the whole arguement is subjective enough to not have an answer at all. Very little, if anything, that I've heard from Buckethead sticks in my memory. But then again, I haven't heard the majority of his work, so I'm not expert.. just basing on what I've heard.

However, Bucketheads playing on 'Octave of the Holy Innocents' is quite interesting, and very subtle. Strange disc, but excellent to listen to when in the proper mood. If you don't have it, check it out.

Music is not an athletic competition. Instead of comparing the penises of all these guitarists, why not try to be open minded and listen to and enjoy each of them for what they do?

Ive tried to get into Guthrie, but he has that same annoying tone that Satriani is so famous for. After about 1 minute I can't stand the sound. I watch him on mute and follow his hands, and i can see where you are coming from, but the sound of his guitar just gets me. (also am snarking on only what i've heard.)

Robert Fripp, Steve Howe and Julian Bream come to mind.

Buckethead plays Page better than Jimmy could ever hope to, he runs circles around Hendrix (like that would be hard),

Hendrix had more soul in his pinky finger. Hendrix was technically brilliant as well as a blazing conduit of raw emotion. I'm not putting down Buckethead - I like him. I think he's an innovative player and great fun to listen to. But Jimi Hendrix was a very rare bird indeed. His music went beyond craft. He was conjurer using tone, melody and power. His music poured out of his heart, through his fingertips, blasting out the amplifier and into your ears, whereupon his soul would touch yours. There is no comparison. There's a damn good reason why nearly every electric guitarist has respect and admiration for Hendrix: he did things we can't - simply because we aren't Hendrix.

has better tone and taste than Clapton and can shred better than any of his peers.

Can't fault you there. I've never understood the Clapton worship. He's an adequate player, but I've met seasoned amateur electric blues players with more heart and chops than Clapton.

ummm... around 1:00 or 1:20 when in the video when he's doing the very fast stuff... the video [and sound?] looks like it was sped up... watch his handmovements [right and left] it looks unnaturally fast, and doctored.
just sayin.

that being said, buckethead has chops.

I agree with you on the Clapton worship, but I guess I just can't see why people go all ape-shiat over Hendrix. Brilliant for his time, yes, but if you read my post carefully, i never mentioned soul. If you want soul, look no further than this

I've noticed people throw the word around a lot when they try to criticize art but have no idea what they're talking about. It's like that Fark cliche: "it insists upon itself."
