It's a proud moment when you are quoted in an article.

"No word on charges" Are you kidding me?

No one got hurt, and flying low over a river, so long as FARs on minimum safe altitudes are observed, is not illegal.

farking hell. If a guy is out mudding in his truck where it is legal to do so runs into a tree or breaks down do they look to throw the book at him?

People do low altitude river runs all the damn time. It's fun and a great way to take in the scenery. People need to chill the fark out with all this OMG AIRPLANES!! bullshiat.

Any landing you can walk (or swim) away from is a good one, any landing where the plane can be reused is a outstanding one.

Why yes, Yes they do.

If an aircraft crashes, for whatever reason, the FAA has to investigate to identify the cause. Local authorities frequently assist. If it turns out he was breaking the rules, there will be charges, but most likely there won't because it sounds like an engine malfunction. The reporter's little bit of hype notwithstanding, it sounds like a run of the mill situation.

Agreed. It's that hype that kinda burns me. So many times people are looking to string up a pilot, whereas if they themselves had gotten into an analogous situation in their car would wonder what the big deal was.

At least he was over water. Seems like every year or so around here someone crashes an ultralight, and it's always into something less than forgiving, like a corn field. The pilot usually winds up stone farking dead, too, so this dude should count himself doubly lucky.

And I know fark-all about flying, but those ultralights don't seem real stable to begin with. Those and the motorized paragliders both seem to accidentally hit the ground with disturbing frequency.

My dad, who is now retired, was an Air Force pilot and a commercial airline pilot - highly experienced, fixed wing and rotor, F-15, F-16, A-10, 727, 737, 747, L-1011, owned a single engine Mooney, etc, etc . . .
And whenever he caught sight of an ultra-light, he'd say "you'd never get me to fly one of those things!"
Hehehe, it kinda wanted to make me give it a try, just to show him I've got more guts. They are fun to watch, though.

In other news, there is a Tobacco Festival.

should have been in the headline.

No, a river in Kentucky is called the Ohio river.

librarianne 2008-08-23 05:12:08 PM
I don't remember ever entering, but my older brother has honest-to-goodness trophies from his victories racing tobacco worms at this very festival!

/My family (until recently) was the largest tobacco producer in the state (Ohio's production isn't much, so "largest" isn't all that big).

The strange thing is not that there's a Tobacco Festival, but that it's in Ohio and not one of the larger producing states (KY, NC, VA).

/Not positive, but my guess has to do with Cincinnati's historical significance.

That's pre-9/11 thinking. In other news, the world is getting smaller. It took less than six years between the day that I created my Fark account, and the day that a story appeared on Fark about someone I know. Just wait until I see him.

the father of my friend also made fark in the headline "Police arrest only black man in Saskatchewan".
i forgot the password to the profile i had at the time and i never got to fill everyone in on everything and be an important part of the thread. it is something i regret to this day and now i keep a quiet vigil over the greenlights hoping i will once again have another crack at the whip
