UPS HAS been doing this for years, not months. It works.

The school bus routes are fixed. At least they are around here. They don't ask the drivers to do anything, they tell them precisely where to go. Kind of odd that they leave things to the driver in that area.

I read somewhere that J. E. Hover ordered his drivers to never make left hand turns. Supposedly for safety.

I am from Maine originally (really) and was just up there last week visiting the folks. It is a pretty lefty state - I am sure that this will not sit well....

If you have to leave your house at 4am to get to school by 8, I don't think you're going to care about how much gas you're saving.

And I don't think the elementary schools are ready to switch to a telecommuting schedule yet.

Go straight one more block, turn right, travel one block, turn right, go another block, then turn right and after another block you will be on your original route.

Now in addition to issuing everyone a tire gauge, we're gonna take the next big step- disable the steering wheel so it CAN'T perform these energy-wasting left turns!

Wait... we don't want everyone "turning right". Can we disable the right turn instead?

and why the fark not ?
after all, most kids have computers these days, most have little cameras so they can chat with the 21 year olds and have butt sex at some point.. so whats the problem ? why can't the teachers use the same technology that allows butt sex, to screw the kids in the ass via the fantastic education process the Americans get ?

//too early to be angry ?

Two wrongs don't make a right, but three rights make a left.

Blocks? Not sure where you live, but my area ain't exactly on a rigid grid. It is not difficult to avoid lefts - it is impossible.

When driving home from work the other day at 1AM (overtime) some guy made a left turn onto the wrong side of the road and was driving right at me. He was either really drunk, or British, I'm not quite sure, but I bet the cop who pulled him over figured it out pretty fast.

Yes, but this is in Fort Kent, Maine. Last winter they had over 7 feet of snow on the ground. Makes for dangerous, not to mention farking cold, walking conditions.

Well...at least someone is.

You don't only make rights, routes for buses are designed with only right hand turns in mind to reduce idling time while waiting for traffic besides a normally more efficient path. If you happen to have to turn left, you turn left, this function is not disabled on the steering wheel.

/he's making a left turn! he's making a left turn!

Maybe it works well in larger cities, but I have a buddy (here in Iowa) who works for UPS and says he ignores the directions because it will tell him to do stupid things like go to the next town over (say 20 miles away) and then come back for another delivery in the original town, simply to avoid a stupid left hand turn. Perhaps if they worked some of these bugs out it would work.

Most of UPS's rural areas don't force the Right Hand Rule, but it will work in smaller areas. I've talked to our local UPS guy and he said at first the routes they had seemed ludicrous - he'd deliver a package, go onto the next town, then come back and deliver another package a block away from the first stop. But, since he had to drive back through the original town to get home, it saved him waiting on a left turn... add that to the rest of the left turns he avoided, and he got his normal route done an hour faster. He's now a fan.

When it comes to school bus routes, it's not that hard to avoid lefts. When I was in high school, the bus came through our section and made all lefts. The last month I rode it, they switched the route so it made all rights. Instead of being the first stop in my section, I was the last... ironically, I was picked up at the same exact time because the bus moved that much faster overall.

It's all fine and dandy to institute the 'no left rule' in a place that is laid out in nice little squares.

Fort Kent isn't much bigger than the town I live in. Once you get outside of the 'center' of town the roads go where the roads go... And the kids in the center of town generally have to walk.

It's a nice thought I guess. And certainly the bus drivers can take it under consideration. But the reality is that either a kid lives on that road or they don't. Some places you are just going to have to take a left.

No its actually not impossible. Take out a map you can draw on, draw a route take every single left turn that you come across, turn around if you either start to go outside the zone you are trying to cover, or if you go back over a road you've already covered. You will eventually cover every single road in the entire map.
Of course UPS has to do each road twice, once going one way up the road again going the other way down the road so they are always delivering to their right. (One way streets being the obvious exception).

wanna solve both problems? It's simple, drive on the left side of the road.

Having spent most of my life up there (the 'Isle), I'm surprised there's enough humans left up there to even farking have a school especially in Fort Kent. Though they do have the Potato Blossom festival every hear I heard. Quite the big deal 'round those parts I've heard.

glassbottomboatcaptain 2008-08-24 05:33:45 AM
Every day I spend on the road I'm absolutely astounded by how challenged most people are by the left turn. I reckon for about 80% of the population it's more than their brain capacity can handle. People who take more than 30 seconds to execute a left turn, and people who slow their car to literally 2mph at the apex of a right turn, should be gassed by the government and used as fuel for the rest of us.

When it comes to traffic people are, for the most part, too irrational to make time saving decisions.
