I love that album. I hadn't liked anything since "Flying in a Blue Dream:. His new album is a bit boring.

I'm sure that get boring but watching him play guitar is a great. Try that next time. Coming to Boston in October and can't frigging wait!

His "guitar face" looks a bit like Dr. Evil.

I'm neither moved nor impressed.

A couple decades ago, he was interesting. Now I can't get past his playing the guitar the way the Queen takes her tea -- no pinkie.

Also from a couple decades ago, and still going strong: Adrian Legg. He uses all his fingers. ;-)

Joe managed to bring a shred of soul to his playing in the harshest of times, the 80s and 90s. I used to really dig him.

Oh, I dunno, Carlos Santana? Eric Clapton? Jimmy Page? Hell, even Toni Iommi? I'll leave Hendrix out because his songwriting was very good, but had some big misses.

Why does Joe Satriani's music sound like it's stock music that you hear in commercials for local car dealerships?

THIS! All this Satriani/Vai/Johnson shiat sounds exactly the same: like second-rate 1986-era porn music. Utterly devoid of character. It's the musical equivalent of a spray-on tan.

To me it sounds like it should have a voice-over advertising a music engineering school. "Do you want a career in music?"

Joe Satriani reminds me of the days of living in San Antonio and always hearing one of his songs on 99.5 KISS, the "heavy metal" station. I always knew it was time to switch to a CD then.

Wow...the amount of ignorance in that is amazing. Try actually listening to it next time, and you will actually hear the emotions maybe. It's much more than just musical masturbation, it's setting a complete tone or even just some emotions purely through the instrument, which takes technical and musical proficiency which eludes most musicians and goes over some people's heads entirely...

lol...good call.

Also sounds like the music from sports highlights, which I'm sure they actually use, anyway.

I thought his backing band was pretty good... but, it must suck constantly being the "other" band members to the main player.

I like Satch, although I was very 'meh' after Engines of Creation and haven't followed him much since.

Buckethead impresses the hell out of me, though. Lately I've been listening to Enter the Chicken. The "Nottingham Lace" solo is farking epic.

iammatt 2008-08-23 03:54:24 PM

carmody 2008-08-23 04:12:44 PM
Hey, MixxMaster, it ain't ignorance. It's taste. And if you like this kind of aural wallpaper, then you clearly lack it.

Don't make me laugh. He's a great player but he's been repeating himself from day one.

Galaxy of Prawns: Don't make me laugh. He's a great player but he's been repeating himself from day one.

Depends on what you listen to. If you cherry-pick his discography (a reasonable strategy, given that he released, what, 30+ albums last year?), you'll find some gems.

I pretend Buckethead only released his good albums. Many are wankery.

AuxRSS 2008-08-23 05:54:07 PM
To be fair, it was the car dealership commercials that ripped off the Satriani sound, not vice versa.

To be unfair, latter-day Satch pretty much lends himself to being ripped off by car dealership commercials.

/"Surfing With The Alien" still rocks

Then you must not be listening. Johnson sounds, and plays, nothing like Satriani or Vai. And Vai sounds different from Satriani.

Patterson 2008-08-23 05:59:41 PM
The discussion on technicality and skill (not necessarily songwriting, which is totally farking subjective) is irrelevant because he is not Allan Holdsworth. The man is in his own league on his own planet. You may not enjoy his music (VERY possible), but there is nobody better at "playing the guitar".

Satch sucks and has always sucked. Good technically, but he never ever plays outside the box.

I don't know if Satriani was one of them, but many of the stock commercial beds from the 80's and 90's were recorded anonymously by world class musicians for a quick paycheck. Pat Metheny being one of them from what I've heard.

Hey, this is FARK. If a guitarist is talented, he automatically gets lumped into the shred arena. I mean, listen to all those pointless notes in Cliffs of Dover.. there isn't even a melody in there!

/sarcasm

P.S. You should all be listening to Guthrie Govan.

And Leo Kotke.

I saw him live here in Dayton with Buddy guy - awesome show. But I have an idea for Eric Johnson. He should sell advertising space on the top of his head because that's all you see 99% of the time. Not a complaint - just an observation.

Agreed. I saw him with Satriani, and Eric definitely does spends a lot more time contemplating his strings. :)

Actually, he's deep in thought contemplating how that one cable in his pedal board is plugged in the wrong way and is totally killing his tone.

Dude's just a few tacos short of a platter.

Not at all. Have you ever read any of his interviews? The dude is the poster child for OCD. He thinks he can hear major differences between different brands of batteries and has said it ruins his whole day if a freaking cable is curling the wrong way.

Did Nevermind just come out yesterday or something? Just because he has actual talent doesn't mean he's masturbating or soulless. The man pours his heart into the music that he's playing. And he has a bigger vocabulary with which to express himself. Like painting with more colors than just red and blue.

enough with the 90s cliches already.

Steve Vai - For the Love of God (new window) Watch from 3:15-5:15. If you don't see "character" there, you got no soul man.

I'm in college in the latter 70s and go with friends to see Dixie Dregs, to worship at the feet of Steve Morse.

Before the show begins, Morse comes on stage to thunderous applause and says, "Our opening act is the greatest guitar player in the world, Eric Johnson" and everyone's jaws hit the floor simultaneously, that Morse would say this. And Johnson was pretty danged good, I admit.
