(ABC News) Strange Dr. Drew denies involvement in rehab deaths. Apparently Drew found time between drinking, appearing on "Fox & Friends", attending Fark parties, raising children and finding just the right Foobies links to go to medical school   (abcnews.go.com) divider line 78

Wait a minute. Wait a minute. WAIT A MINUTE. You mean to tell me that a facility catering to individuals who want to treat their attempts at getting off some sort of addictive substance as just one more way of getting in front of a camera might not be operated at the highest level of professionalism and ethics? That's unpossible. I don't believe it. It's preposterous.

Dr. Drew can't be held responsible for all the problems at this hospital, he is but one of the specialists on staff. That being said, I hope whatever happened is investigated, but I think Dr. Drew is the man.

"I think our son died because of the clinical incompetence and gross negligence, and the protocol that was insufficient," Clyburn said.

You don't think it could be because your son was addicted to drugs, which last time I checked, wasn't beneficial to a long and healthy lifestyle?

...So, because this woman's son idolized Dr. Drew, she holds him personally responsible for his death, even though the boy had not been under Pinski's care for several months.

Now THIS is the kind of thing I'd like to hear an Adam Carolla rant about.

Arline Clyburn, whose 23-year-old son, Alex Clyburn, died nine hours after he was admitted to Las Encinas for an addiction to painkillers, told ABCNews.com that poor monitoring led to her son's death.

"I think our son died because of the clinical incompetence and gross negligence, and the protocol that was insufficient," Clyburn said.

Generally I would claim as many farkers would, that these morons should just claim personal responsibilities for their life choices, and that these parents need to realize that their kid was a dope addict dumbass. But considering that the kid did check into rehab, I wonder if this kids personal responsibilities should be shifted to the clinic. Hmmmm I'm in a tough dilemma here.

I have to agree with the clinic being responsible. Sure, it was his choice to become addicted to the drugs, but he did his share of the persona responsibility thing by signing into the rehab center, with the assurance that he'd be checked every 15 minutes. Assuming this was the sort of care he needed, and he didn't get it, how is it his fault, when they accepted him, laid out a plan for his care, and assured his family they could leave... only for him to be found "stiff and rigid" a few hours later? If anything, that proves he wasn't checked for quite some time and it sounds like he was admitted/accepted in pretty bad shape.

It is somewhere in the middle -- his own actions did lead to his death, but considering the responsible thing to do was seek help -- and he did... I don't know what more he could have done.

I think I'd like to know what the cause of death was. Overdose? If so, they really should have been watching/identifying the symptoms so they could treat it immediately [charcoal, whatever else.] Was he strapped down? Did he choke on vomit? Would he have died regardless of whether or not he was there? Or did actions that took place in the hospital make him more likely to die? All of that seems rather key when it comes to this situation....

That said, they're also choosing to blame Dr. Drew because he's famous. If he really had nothing to do with the patient who died, how is he personally responsible? Go after the people who said they'd watch him every 15 minutes/admitted him, not the famous guy. Though I suppose he has the deepest pockets....

But, from a medical standpoint, it did free them from their addictions. And that's all that matters for a healthy society. Heil Dr. Drew!

Absolutely this. This wasn't a treatment facility for OCD patients or people who liked pillows, it was for hard core drug abusers.

every time I watch that show, I come away with the impression that they never really deal with the real issues that cause the drug addiction. For instance, I saw one where this kid, really bright, living in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma, who was shackled to his none-too-bright fundie family. They tried to make him fit into their little shape of the world when it was clear that he was not shaped that way. Yet in all of the interventionists babble, he never once addressed the family's role in browbeating this kid all his life. Jesus himself would have been mainlining Drano if he had to live withe these people. So I really question this show's validity. Then again, it is a farking TV show.

Looks like it's not aired in Illinois, but I imagine you would be able to tune in over the internet by finding a station that does air it and listening into their online broadcast.

because there is no trust between the care givers and care receivers in a drug addiction clinic, they, the care givers, are unlikely to really respond to statements of pain or "something is wrong". Addiction clinics have a horrible history or not managing medication, too much or too little (mostly too little).
The AMA and the FDA are also to blame, they are the ones restricting physicians to establish a base line for the individual's addiction level. The patient's base line should be established and used as a tool to adjust their addiction as the first part of treatment (this will also provide a great deal of information in establishing future trends).
If a person is seeking help, why make them suffer so much? (are they really trying negative re-enforcement?).
Having a close friend who was in one of these premiere detox clinics, it turned out his nurse "decided" that that the physician over prescribed methadone, and the nurse changed the RX to 1/3 of what was the intended dose (where did those other 2/3rds go?) the pain he suffered ended up with more problems after than well in.
And what is it with there support of Naracacon, part of the scientology family! get them into a cult when they are at their weakest point.
While Dr. Drew maybe the head physician, the entire chain of command should be evaluated There are some drugs that will lead to death when suddenly stopping them, some "smarter than the physician" may not be aware of all the factor.
The best care for a person in need is a hospital with some detox wing; once the first week is over, then take them to one of these spa clinics.

I read something, I forget exactly where, that explained that Dr. Drew wasn't a real licensed M.D. I mean, it's bad enough the way he treats any female sexual dysfunctionality (it MUST BE RAPE, etc. is his answer to any legitimate sexual quirk a woman has)-- I had to turn off Loveline once because he was so mysogynistic, it made me sick.

Read 'biatchfest- 10 Years of Feminine Commentary on Pop Culture' and find the section about Dr. Drew. He's a joke, and the way he treats drug addicts makes me want to throttle him with a tire iron.

Nowhere in the article does give the actual cause of death of the Clyburn kid. (The one whose mother thinks it's all Dr Drew's fault.) The kid could have taken a handful of God-only-knows-what before being admitted, and even if they had watched him every 15 minutes, he would have died anyway from overdose.

I'm not saying the hospital didn't screw up, but unless they can produce some sort of report that says "Mr. Clyburn died from something that absolutely happened because no one was watching him", I don't know that they have that much of a case. Their son was a drug addict, and sometimes this stuff happens when you are an addict, even in rehab.

My fiancee died last year from complications from pneumonia. He was a diabetic who was not controlling his diabetes at the time, and his blood sugar was somewhere in the 400-500 range when he was admitted. In the six weeks he was there, the hospital screwed up numerous times, and he had some of the most neglectful staff I've ever encountered. His sister and I pondered suing the hospital several times, but we always came back to the fact that if Joe had been taking care of himself, he never would have ended up in the hospital in the first place. Nothing was more detrimental to his health than the rampant diabetes, even if the medical staff weren't doing their jobs. While I can certainly empathize with the Clyburns, I don't think suing the hospital is going to make any difference.

/R.I.P. Joe

Because the initial step is always to stop the substance use FIRST, then counsel on the underlying issues. Trying to provide counseling to a junkie is pointless and will not accomplish anything except hurt feelings all around. So first you deal with the drugs, then you deal with the person. Trust me on this as someone who has had to pull someone back from the depths of the addict nightmare.
