McCain has picked Romney... and I am overjoyed by that fact. All that work to bring the fundamentalists into his tent will be wiped out by that one decision.

Texas State Senator Bruce "This is my Boomstick" Campbell is over joyed to hear this.

He doesn't really need the Jew vote, nor, because of Dick Warren, needs the fundies vote. If he was smart, he'd pick Olympia Snowe.

Not going to happen. I think that was floated more to get the media buzzing about McCain's VP possibilities and maybe steal some press from Obama.

Snarfangel [TotalFark] 2008-08-22 12:46:39 PM
He's going to combine all three with Giuliani and Fred Thompson to form VOLTRON!

robsul82 [TotalFark] 2008-08-22 12:54:41 PM
All of his choices generally suck, it's not a good slate. Pawlenty's a formerly-mulleted boring nobody from a state going for Obama anyway. Romney cedes the "spooooooky religion!" card they're playing against Obama and social conservatives HAVE to know Mitt's snowing them on his "I AM THE BIGGEST CONSERVATIVE SINCE RONALD REAGAN!" shiat. Lieberman's not a Republican's pick. Ridge pisses off the religious right. Just not a good bunch of candidates for John McCain, former prisoner of war.

HansensDisease [TotalFark] 2008-08-22 01:05:39 PM
If Romney becomes the GOP VP candidate will our resident Freepers submit endless headlines about McCain being a Seekrit Mormon™!

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2008-08-22 01:40:39 PM
If the "short list is really Romney, Pawlenty, Lieberman, Ridge," then McCain's fkt.

A flip-flopping Mormon who once said he was a better friend to gays than Ted Kennedy,
A giant snooze fest from a mulleted dude know one's heard of,
A pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-environment, not anti-gay Jew,
or a pro-choice Catholic best known for his goofy color schemes?

Have I mentioned lately that I would destroy that? And not in any political way.

Flying Undead Sheep 2008-08-22 02:09:24 PM
No chance for Lieberman...I always thought it was going to be Huckabee. I've heard rumours that Romney agreed to drop out early when McCain was gaining momentum, in exchange for the VP spot- this would give the Democrats more time to beat each other up as well.

Wight Power [TotalFark] 2008-08-22 02:10:44 PM
I heard he picked Chester A Aurthur...

BECAUSE HE'S SO DAMN OLD!! HA HA!

*sigh*
I'll be quiet now.

McCain isn't looking for a running mate. He's looking for a care-giver.

Harry Freakstorm 2008-08-22 02:11:26 PM
I heard it was Pho Tuc a North Vietnamese POW guard. His reasoning: He knows torture and gets results.
Knows how to handle a staff whether it is one being used to break the backs of the enemy prisoners or a group of people.
Can make a damn good rice gruel with just the right amount of crow.

importedbeer 2008-08-22 02:11:45 PM
Well, Mitt gives him a shot at states like Colorado which have significant Mormon populations. Mitt also gives him more of a story in Michigan.

On the other hand, there is the evangelical base- the values "Huckabee" voter who is just starting to come around after Saddleback who may feel spurned.

It doesn't matter if he picked Bozo the Clown, he's still going to lose big. Don't let the polls fool you, the turnout for McBush will be anemic, and even Republicans are underwhelmed by his farce of a candidacy.

robsul82 [TotalFark] 2008-08-22 02:13:02 PM
If there IS a good pick out there, it's Mike Huckabee. Warm, friendly, genuinely funny, can mask his horrendously backwards positions extremely well. But I think Huck has pissed McCain off beyond belief with his criticisms recently, so.

DarthBrooks: There was a chance...

She's got her own scandal to worry about now.

I would have bet on Romney until McCain forgot the number of houses he had.

When you sound like an aloof, filthy rich elitist you don't typically want to choose an aloof, filthy rich elitist as your VP when you're trying to make your opponent look like an aloof, filthy rich elitist.

FTFY.

All the exit polls in 2004 and 2000, in Ohio and Florida, said Bush lost. But somehow he still 'won' those states. We send the U.N. to ensure other countries' elections aren't stolen or rigged, yet we allowed it to happen right here. Twice. Three times, come November, just wait.

Anti_illuminati: If he was smart, he'd pick Olympia Snowe.

Why? So Maine can elect a Democrat to replace her and get the Senate up to fillibuster-proof? So she can bring one more of Maine's split electoral votes to McCain?

She isn't well liked amongst the GOP base, isn't a good speaker, etc. Terrible choice, and no sign she is interested anyhow.

If you want the power lady vote, Palin is it. Or if you want a lady anvil, Liddy Dole fits the bill and would be replaced by another Republican senator at least.

r1chard3 2008-08-22 02:22:35 PM
Ironicaly Leberman could end up being the most liberal president in the last fifty years.

Triaxis 2008-08-22 02:22:43 PM
ROomney would be awesome, then McCain can croak and we'll have a real president in office.

Jacobin 2008-08-22 02:24:00 PM
The only reason I hope its not Lieberman is that if Obama doesn't win, and McCain croaks before he leaves office, then we are stuck with that farking loser windbag as president. Lots of assumptions there, but good grief, the prospect is truly dismal.

Observatory 2008-08-22 02:24:11 PM
He could pick Jesus H. Christ and it still wouldn't matter. He's too old, too angry and too out of touch with the average American. Pays more for his SERVANTS than most people pay for their ONE house.
