martin luther king was a labor activist and one of the first national figures to denounce the war in vietnam. if he were alive he'd be a dennis kucinich supporter.

EvilEgg [TotalFark] 2008-08-22 09:10:05 AM
His basis for this assertion is that Obama hates whitey and King would not be okay with that.

See this is a good example of begging the question.

I'd have to agree with this...

FLMountainMan 2008-08-22 09:12:04 AM
If MLK were alive today, he'd be a pretty popular tv evangelist, in the mode of Creflo Dollar. Considering his income, he likely would be a republican, but I doubt he'd pass up the chance to vote for Obama.

In a recent Newsweek article, "Finding His Faith," Obama answers questions regarding his attendance at Trinity. He now says he and Michelle really didn't attend Trinity very often at all. "At the beginning, we went fairly frequently . . . probably went two or three times a month. When we had Malia, our first child, we went less frequently, and that probably continued for a couple of years, just because - I don't know if you've had the experience of taking young, squirming children to church, but it's not easy. . . . As they got older, we would go back a little more frequently, probably twice a month."

Unfortunately, Senator Obama gave a vastly different answer to the same question when he was running for his U.S. Senate seat. Here's what he told Cathleen Falsani, in a face-to-face interview for the Chicago Tribune. In March 2004, Obama said this about his church attendance:

FALSANI: Do you still attend Trinity?
OBAMA: Yep. Every week. 11 o'clock service. Ever been there? Good service. I actually wrote a book called Dreams from My Father, it's kind of a meditation on race. There's a whole chapter on the church in that, and my first visits to Trinity.

It was more politically expedient for him to be identified with the Church when he was running for his US Senate seat, duh. As a sidenote, is Church really supposed to be a "meditation on race"? I go to church to worship, not talk identity politics.

Obama even voted against a state version of the Infants Born Alive Protection Act - which would guarantee the right of medical care to babies who have survived attempted abortions.

Obama supporters, is there more background on this that might help explain his "no" vote?

BritneysSpeculum [TotalFark] 2008-08-22 10:37:43 AM
KaponoFor3: Obama supporters, is there more background on this that might help explain his "no" vote?

It was a political shell bill that was intended merely to force a vote for precisely reasons like this. Moreover, it is unnecessary since a baby born alive is fully vested with a life interest already protected by the 14th amendment along with about a 1000 laws that regulate emergency medical care. Any one who killed a born alive baby would have committed first degree murder under Illinois law.

Was emergency medical care guaranteed to such children by statute in Illinois at the time?

It definitely sounds like it was a bill intended to look good on the politician's resumes, at least at first glance and if I can assume what you say is true. Then why vote against it? What is the good Obama gets for doing so? He has to know that it will be giving his challengers tons of ammunition against him.

Nestea Plunge: We're touched by your concern, slappy.

From an objective/strategy point of view, it's just a stupid decision that puts him in a tough place. McCain has had plenty of them as well.

You'd think these politicians might be a little smarter than they are.

FTFA: School Choice
If Barack Obama were a candidate committed to genuine change for disadvantaged Americans, offering them a choice of better schools for their children would be a no-brainer issue for him.

Do neo-cons really think that school choice would help the disadvantaged? All it would do is pull money from the public school system and put it into a private school system that will cater to the richest and best connected students with an occasional bone thrown to a darkie so they can claim they are helping the less fortunate. Seriously people. No right minded person that can not currently afford private school should support school vouchers.

If I did not have a kid, I would really like to give all three branches of the government over to the Republicans and let them have privatization of schools, no abortions, open and free markets with no imposed labor standards and no regulations, a pay for yourself healthcare system and safety and security at the expense of liberty national security. Then we could finally purge the system of the objectivist and start working together to make this country great again.

Complicit [TotalFark] 2008-08-22 11:44:07 AM
I wonder if the NRO realizes it reads like a parody of itself.

I realize the right is trying to force race back into the picture at every opportunity, but this has got to be the most half-witted attempt yet.

If Obama were white but held the same policy positions, especially in regards to the economy, Dr. King would still be an Obama supporter. Race has zero to do with it.

mr_crash_davis 2008-08-22 11:54:00 AM

DaSwankOne 2008-08-22 11:59:15 AM
Obama is the summit in MLK's I Have Been to the Mountain Top speech. A person of color on the ticket of a major political party only 40 years after a time when he would not have been able to drink from the same water fountain as a white man. I might have disagreed with Buckley on many economic issues, but I think that even he would agree that his legacy is being ruined by the folks at NRO.

Cagey B [TotalFark] 2008-08-22 11:59:45 AM
Ah, the Dead Historical Figures Derby has begun.

Well, I have it on good authority that Mahatma Gandhi would not only vote against McCain, but also call him a cock-knocker on national TV and then give him a noogie.

BritneysSpeculum [TotalFark] 2008-08-22 12:00:29 PM
KaponoFor3: Was emergency medical care guaranteed to such children by statute in Illinois at the time?

I believe that federal law mandates that all hospitals must provide life sustaining treatment to every person who comes there. There is no need to specify newly aborted babies would also fit since a born alive baby is by definition a person.

DaSwankOne 2008-08-22 12:02:38 PM
I guess this means that Teddy Roosevelt would have voted for Obama because he believed in a universal healthcare system?

I think the most asinine thing ever is to speculate on who a dead person would have voted for if he were alive today. How low could you possibly get? You don't know the person, at least not intimately, unless you were closely related to him. How farking dare you speak in his name and presume to say what he would do? It's such a prick thing. Not to mention, it doesn't even farking matter. He's dead, who honestly cares how he would've voted? Yes he was a great man, but think for your god damn self.

Shaggy_C 2008-08-22 01:11:05 PM

Why do you think he's dead? COINTELPRO got him and we blamed a 'lone gunman'. Yay America!
