I Farked Your Mom [TotalFark] 2008-08-21 02:32:04 PM
Wow, that was horrible.

tnpir [TotalFark] 2008-08-21 03:09:23 PM
Uh, no, it sucks. Sorry, but St. Anger was way, WAY better than that piece of crap.

ADIDAS247 2008-08-21 03:31:28 PM
That's a matter of opinion subby, and no one friggin asked for yours, k.

Love,

Metal"fightthegoodfight"lica

Not into it.

And the first 30 seconds kinda reminded me of DJ Shadow...

/the snare just sounds...wrong. Not heavy, but it sounds out of place.

aquigley [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-08-21 05:22:37 PM
Mason Williams - "Classical Gas". Very, very similiar in the beginning. Just a bit slower. STEAL THAT LINE RADIO PEOPLE

STFU_and_RTFM [TotalFark] 2008-08-21 05:25:59 PM
Yeah, no thanks. Is it just me, or did that sound remarkably like a Three Doors Down song?

Outtaphase [TotalFark] 2008-08-21 05:57:48 PM
I haven't cared much for their stuff since Justice, but that sounded downright emo. I don't even miss 'em anymore.

downstairs [TotalFark] 2008-08-21 06:03:09 PM
So putting out new stuff doesn't work, they just re-release Fade to Black with better production?

Godscrack [TotalFark] 2008-08-21 06:06:40 PM
I stopped at reading "The Day That Never Comes"

CheddarPants [TotalFark] 2008-08-21 06:13:58 PM
Not bad. But I don't get a chill down my spine like I did the day the advance copy of And Justice for All came in the mail.

radioberlin 2008-08-21 06:36:00 PM
How... modern rock.

Nemo's Brother 2008-08-21 06:40:46 PM
I'm going to pirate it and then never listen to it because it sucks.

browntimmy 2008-08-21 06:41:30 PM
So, would anyone like to put at least a little thought into their review?

DeathByGeekSquad 2008-08-21 06:41:44 PM
Holy shiat was it just me or did that sound like a terrible bit rate?

aquigley [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-08-21 06:42:15 PM
Nemo's Brother: I'm going to pirate it and then never listen to it because it sucks.

howabout this,

the drumming makes it so much worse, Lars apparently never heard of Dynamics! its pretty important

It seems like Hammett was taking a page out of dragonforces book with the solo section, mixed in with a little suck

I thought james voice was nice sounding, you dont always have to sound like you are gargling pebbles

galumph200 2008-08-21 06:46:54 PM
Big FAIL for subby.

That sounded like Linkin Park meets Creed.

If this is the best they can do with Rick Rubin behind the boards, it's time to hang it up.

Galaxy of Prawns 2008-08-21 06:47:23 PM
I could only take the first two minutes. It sounds like that awful pop-grunge that was all the rage about ten years ago.

DeathByGeekSquad 2008-08-21 06:47:46 PM
Search youtube for Cyanide, they played it during Ozzfest apparently, it's better quality than the shiat linked above.

Sounds pretty damn good too, definitely excited.

galumph200 2008-08-21 06:49:04 PM
Oh, and Lars's drumming is crap on this song.
What the F happened to him?!

neocortex 2008-08-21 06:50:25 PM
The first five minutes are slow, but then the song just takes off and sounds like some old school thrash.

/f*ck the haters

Yes, more like this. I would actually like to read a discussion instead of a collection of boos and hisses. Also, it's not possible to add more suck to Dragonforce.

Hey, I had valid criticism in my BOOBIES, wrt the snare sound.

/and it is very Fade-to-black-esque

Already Disturbed 2008-08-21 06:56:40 PM
It's like a song off Load with good Metallica tacked on at the end.

It shouldn't take five minutes for an eight minute song to "get going".

Yeah, the second half of the song was better than the first, but the majority of the song was still turgid. This was an especially bad choice for the 1st single: they should have picked something that ripped it right from note #1. Instead we get mainly "The Unforgiven pt. 2.5" (It's bad enough that the album DOES contain "The Unforgiven pt. 3"--can somebody say "out of ideas"?).

And I will re-iterate. Lars's drumming sounded like he was sleepy, and banging on a suitcase with a wet newspaper, just off the beat. It was so clumsy it even made Ringo Starr go "Damn! WTF was that?!"

THIS!
Can't wait to d/l the entire album, burn dozens of copies, and hand it out to everyone passing by on the street.

"Hey Metallica is giving their new album out for free!!! I think it sucks but listen for yourself"

old school thrash should be read as "trying way too damn hard"

RevMercutio [TotalFark] 2008-08-21 07:06:19 PM
The first half ballad portion isn't very good. It's more catering to alternative radio (which has been playing Metallica since Load anyways). It's especially a bad idea for the first single, since it doesn't do anything to wash St. Anger out.

Also, James's whole stylistic vocal change for ballads (which he's done since around S&M) just isn't very good.

There aren't any set rules about what a song can or can't do. But you're right in that this song doesn't really flow into the heavy part naturally. I still think we'll get at least a couple good songs off this album.

Wrong_Intentions 2008-08-21 07:11:19 PM
Meh. Going back to their old, good sound would be one thing. Re-using Fade to Black is another. I declare pathetic.

Actually, the instrumental part just started, and it's not too bad. Why not just do the whole song like that?

CentralValleyCali 2008-08-21 07:15:39 PM
I am excited about this as I am about a new Britney Spears record.

ehanley 2008-08-21 07:17:26 PM
anyone hear Echo Beach in there? At about 50 seconds in?

Martha and the Metalamuffins?

I thought The Day That Never Comes was the day Metallica writes a good song again.

Third Day Mark 2008-08-21 07:33:30 PM
Guitar Solos = Good
Everything else in that piece of shiat song = Bad. Horrible. WHARRGARBL type fail.

thegonz111 2008-08-21 07:38:59 PM
Rick Rubin did the best with what he had

barneyfifesbullet 2008-08-21 07:39:01 PM
Last third of the song is great. Hope the rest of the songs doesn't take so long to speed up. Hey, Kirk soloed.

I actually listened to the whole song before posting. I win.

comic1717 [TotalFark] 2008-08-21 07:39:15 PM
Why does Hetfield sing like he's on the can taking a massive dump, it's been this way since the Black album. Every time I hear him sing it sounds like he is shiatting on all of their fans. (Oh wait, I forgot that this is Metallica.....)

Metallica hasn't been good since ...And Justice..

/Death Magnetic.......wow, just, wow

Joed112784 2008-08-21 07:40:16 PM
Wow...generic.

neocortex 2008-08-21 07:43:04 PM
galumph200:

Yeah, the song took way long to get started. What worries me is that it sounds like a victim of the "loudness wars." The record labels force sound engineers to compress the living hell out of the songs to make them sound louder and as a result there's a lot of clipping. I noticed it especially with the vocals.

nitroglycerine 2008-08-21 07:46:16 PM
I'm that guy who thinks Kill 'em All was the best album, but I have to admit that was awes.....No just kidding...That sucked big hairy McCain balls. LOL Emotallica

felix_golden 2008-08-21 07:49:48 PM
Missed an opportunity to make this song heavy about 30 seconds in. Meh for the next 4:30, then apparently they found the solos they forgot to put on St. Anger and tacked them onto the end of the song... ALL OF THEM!

Given the length of the song, I'm guessing the last 3 minutes of the song is out the window for the radio edit. Not that I care about radio edits, but its the version most people will hear first.

Drunk, angry and desperate is no way to go through life, but it sure made some great albums.

ghengiscone 2008-08-21 07:51:33 PM
ugh just ugh

/actually wanted to like it
//oh well

Hetfield 2008-08-21 07:52:16 PM
Corny lyrics mixed with boring songwriting. And what's with the distortion? This song could have been much better if they had chosen a higher level of distortion. You know, like a metal band, or something. The guitars sounded heavier on Load, for fark's sake.

What a weak opener for an album I've had huge expectations for.

staveoffzombies 2008-08-21 07:53:09 PM
I like it very much....except for the drums. Lars is a shiat drummer...why is he so loud? And he's overusing the snare.

But despite that this is a good song.

Knobbs 2008-08-21 07:54:48 PM
I like Metallica. I liked everything up through Load and most of Re-Load. Stanger sucked. Sucked bad. Sucked REALLY bad.

This makes Stanger sound like god opened up the heavens and played it himself.

I hated this song. Guitar, drums...it was all just so boring. And it sounded stark like they were going for a garage band sound, but somehow managed to make it sound overproduced at the same time by compressing everything like crazy.

The lyrics were pretty laughable as well.

For comparison, I'd give Justice an A+, Black an A, Load an A-, Re-Load a B-, and Stanger an F.

Overall, I would rate the album thusly:

Q--

ghengiscone 2008-08-21 07:56:29 PM
also... "love is a four letter word"

jesus christ, why metallica, why?

/do i even need to ask?

killingalltheflies 2008-08-21 08:04:30 PM
Wow, that was crap. And that was about the most uninspired soloing I've ever heard from Kirk.

ekdikeo4 2008-08-21 08:10:14 PM
Dear God, James, you know you can't sing, why must you insist on writing songs that require being able to sing?
