My boys listen to Coltrane/jazz too. When give the controls to my Sirius remote, it's channel 72 all the time.

I think it's because my oldest always fell asleep to the local jazz station. But... Point is, Satellite radio has given much more choices in music that traditional on air 'crap'

It's nice to see teachers taking alternative approaches to open the eyes of our young people. Kudos.

At that age we were learning antiquated folk-tunes (I will give a surgeon whatever it takes to remove the part of my brain that has stored My Hat, It Has Three Corners), saying ta-ta-tee-tee-ta until we were dizzy with boredom, and sitting around feeling uncomfortable having to listen to Rosy Grier Singing "It's Alright To Cry."

Sweet. More teachers should be doing stuff like this. It's important to teach reading, math, and science, of course, but I think along the way too many people have forgotten how to use their imagination, how to be creative. And that skill is SO important. Teachers like this are doing a Good Thing. Congratulations to her for giving these kids enough credit that she would even attempt such a thing.

Step 1: Use the words 'reefer' and 'addict' in the same sentence. Bonus points for calling it reefer, a term I haven't heard since, well, ever

Step 2: Assert that the foundation of rock and roll is something "only pot-heads and rummies listen to..."

Step 3: Profit?

You weren't able to get Nickleback concert tickets, so you came in here to pout about it?

If you would have simply said: "I don't like jazz," we could agree to disagree. Instead, you show yourself to either be an asshole or a troll. Of course, troll and asshole are one in the same.

pristineangie 2008-08-21 11:21:13 AM
The continuum of jazz depends on people like Ms. Passarella. If one were to stop half the people on the streets today and show them the album photo of Coltrane's "My Favorite Things" they'll most likely say "he's playing the Kenny-G horn." And Coltrane brought the soprano sax back into jazz (since Bechet).

Free jazz has been so neglected (even by Ken Burns) and often misunderstood. There's a strong humane and sometimes political message in Coltrane's 60s music. I'm so glad to hear the teacher didn't subject the kids to yet another repetition of Davis's "All Blues."

*goes off to listen to the unabridged Ascension in celebration of this delightful news.

quetzl jity 2008-08-21 11:21:28 AM
Very cool to see this. I worshipped at the alter of Coltrane for the majority of my college years.

One of the most creative and innovative musicians of the 20th century.
