Joe was a one-of-a-kind human being. Sucks he's no longer with us.

By the way, if you haven't seen it, the documentary "The Future Is Unwritten" is an excellent film that covers his entire life and career. Directed by Julien Temple & narrated mostly by Joe himself, from clips gleaned from interviews.

This clip is from the movie Rude Boy, so it's not strictly a true live video clip. That's the main character doing all that.

Joe is one of my heroes and I am sad to say I never got to see him play. One of the biggest regrets I have in my short life.

Joe and the Clash had a global outlook and helped provide punk rock a social conscience. A voice lots of bands down the pipe looked to when speaking about the world around them in an intelligent and real way. In a genre of music which had a sound (Stooges/Ramones/Dead Kennedys), sense of humor (Dead Kennedys/Ramones), and an attitude (Sex Pistols), the Clash provided some sensibility. They are my favorite band so I may just be tooting their horn but I do think they are one of the more important rock bands ever.

Miss you Joe.

1979: I hadn't really listened to much rock music for the past three years, mostly classical and jazz, because prog was dead and all the dinosaur bands were so past it and I didn't feel like listening to 3rd rate Ramones imitators. A friend puts on the first Clash album (US version) and by the end of it, I was hooked. Hearing The Clash got me back in to rock again, though I had some catching up to do.

Saw 'em 7 times, sadly they were all after Topper got the boot. Still, the Friday show during the Hollywood Palladium Combat Rock run was easily one of the best gigs I've ever been to, just pure energy and power. The less said about the US Festival, the better.... :-(

Saw them as the opening act for the Who at the LA Colosseum in 1982.

They were good but seemed a little off performance-wise that day, but at least I can say I saw them.

Can someone fill in the blanks to all the drama going on at the end of the video?

The band was running late, they were playing a festival. They organizers wanrd another band to come on so they turned off the power on the Clash. This ticked off the band's managers including Johnny Green. He enticed Ray Gange (the Rude Boy) to go up on stage and get the crowd to yell for more Clash. He also pointed at one of the organizers who I assume puled the plug and said 'Fark Him!' to the crowd. The other organizers then went to boot Ray off the stage and a minor fracas ensued.

/have watched Rude Boy more times than i care to admit
//clash are my favortie band
///met Joe in '91 - coolest dude ever

Marshmallow Jones 2008-08-21 03:36:09 PM
Actually, to clarify the above Johnny Green was a more of a head roadie than a manager.

I'm right there with you on that one. I've seen Mick play with Big Audio Dynamite many times. And shiat, I've even seen Paul play with Havana 3am, but alas I missed Joe playing, and I was too young and provincial to have followed The Clash.

RIP Joe.

Did music fight racism? - BBC article - and video - on the original festival to fight racism - all started by Eric Clapton mouthing off about Britain becoming a black nation. True! (new window)

HELL YES. I know a lot of fans hate the "slick" production but it's not slick, it's just everything is in tune and sounds good. Great drum sound and on songs like Tommy Gun, the guitars sound incredible. And what a pack of songs! Safe European Home, Tommy Gun, Last Gang in Town, Drug Stabbing Time (except for that crappy sax solo) and the awesome Cheapskates.

If death comes so cheap
Then the same goes for life

One of my favorite headlines ever is the one on the review of London Calling in the NME:

Give 'em enough dope and they turn in to the Rolling Stones

The kingdom is ransacked, the jewels all taken back
And the chopper descends
They're hidden in the back, with a message on a half-baked tape
With the spool going round, saying I'm back here in this place
And I could cry
And there's a smoke you could click on
What are we going to do now?
