Why apologize? Do people really pay attention to movie release dates that far in advance? I just know the rough timeframe and only start paying attention in the month prior to release. It seems MOST movies are delayed a week or two, so why worry?

/Yes, I'm aware this is much longer than a week or two. My point stands.

my kids are bummed. they wanted that as their 'reward' if they got straight a's.

i told them i would take them if they got straight a's for the entire year. they were hoping for the quarter...

i think the last movie will come out when emma watson and the rest are in their thirties.

Ok, he's sorry that he has disappointed the fans. Does anyone know WHY they are moving it to next summer? Are they doing a re-edit? Did it not test well? Did they look at The Dark Knight and say "Hey, we can do that"?

They're moving it because Daniel Radcliffe's new play, "Equus", where he's naked and abuses a horse, is opening on Broadway this fall. Imagine the interviews!

Common thought is 1) WB just made all the money they need for 2008 with "Dark Knight"; and 2) the writers' strike means they had no blockbuster lined up for 2009.

So they just figured to spread the money around a little.

Actually, there is a HUGE hubbub amongst fans over this. They're threatening protests and boycotts.

Yeah. Over a movie. I like Harry Potter but, god, this is making me embarrassed to admit it.

Fark the Cruciatus Curse, I'm going straight to the Imperious Curse. You've got to really mean it.

It's just a disappointment that they're making the fans wait so they can have a better bottom line in 2009. HP is good, clean fun that families can enjoy and they're making a lot of people mad so they can move around their profits. It's a low tactic.

Steve Zodiac: Ok, he's sorry that he has disappointed the fans. Does anyone know WHY they are moving it to next summer? Are they doing a re-edit? Did it not test well? Did they look at The Dark Knight and say "Hey, we can do that"?

Essentially;

With The Dark Knight making eleventy zillion dollars, WB can effectively absolutely tank on everything else they release this year and still turn a profit. Due to the writers strike last/this year, there are slim pickins for movies next summer. The only "big" movies that WB has on the board for summer 2009 are Watchmen and Terminator 4:Salvation.

No one knows how watchmen is going to do. Based on the trailer alot of people have hope, but no one is certain. It's a new property that doesn't have the built in fanbase that Terminator, Batman, or Harry Potter has. It's based on a graphic novel that is insanely popular with people who know the medium, but to the average person it just looks like another superhero movie. It doesn't have a "big" star. And with the rumored 3 hour running time and R rating, it's a bit of a gamble. And that doesn't even include the rumors about FOX trying to delay release due to a clusterfark of ownership rights stretching back to the early 90s. So at this point Watchmen could make a crapload of cash, or it could bomb hard.

Terminator is an established franchise, but after the lukewarm reception of T3 and being the first one without Arnold, it's still up in the air.

So basically WB has 2 movies that may or may not work. HP is guaranteed to make a ton of money, so if they push it back to mid 09 the counter balance the possible failure of two movies with the guaranteed success of another, without hurting the 08 revenue (thanks to TDK).

srhp29: I don't know about that. It seems to me once I hear a hard date for a big realease, that tends to be the day it comes out.

Yeah, I was speaking out of my ass on that one. I know a couple of movies that I've paid attention to (Dark Knight being an example) were pushed back for one reason or other. I vaguely remember TDK had a May or June release date at first. So I thought it was pretty common.

And it's not like it matters, IMO... There's plenty of stuff out there to see. Plus in the Potter movies, you already know how they turn out. ::rolls eyes::

DOW 2008-08-21 12:29:43 AM
I don't give a rat's ass either way, but isn't this really going to hurt kill box office sales?

I mean, they moved the movie to open in the same quarter (or close to) as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, John Carter of Mars, Star Trek, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Terminator Salvation, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Watchmen, and well... Hannah Montana: The Movie.

I remember all the groans at Comic Con 2007 when the Star Trek teaser came on and said 12.25.08.
That was a YEAR before it was supposed to come out, then they moved it back even farther.

March doesn't fall into the definition of Summer.

"Watchmen" is not a new property [unless the context was "New to the majority of the mass film-attending populace at large", in which case disregard this cluster of syllables].

The rest of the conjecture and supposition in this thread still stands.

Holy crap, I hope you don't have a family if money is all you think about as rewards.

Maybe they live in the sticks, and it's an hour drive to get to the theater, and that's enough of a treat. Maybe the kids think watching the movie is enough of a reward for striving hard, and aren't money-obsessed. Maybe they are good parents, and the kids are happy with what they get.

And maybe, just maybe, you can stop acting like the farking problem with the US, and let other people handle their own family matters without someone telling them how they should do it. Focus on your own issues, which by your post, I will assume are many.

/On topic, I'll watch it when it comes out.

I never understood this sentiment. Much better to just give kids everything and have them be spoiled little biatches, yes? You don't -have- to do it. The point is that you're providing some tangible end toward which to encourage them.

Wow... Rewarding / reinforcement of positive behavior is a very proven method for training / eliciting a specific response. Should you just toss money at a situation that's positive, and just ignore negative outcomes? No. Kids need to understand there are positive OR negative responses to each action.

That said... Moving Harry Potter makes me more "Meh" about the series. I read the books, and while the movies are interesting to watch from an effects / execution perspective... they aren't all that :)

What's particularly funny are the fans who intend to boycott the movie. They somehow think that will allow them to get their own back. That's right. They're so annoyed that they won't be able to see the movie as soon as they'd like, so instead they're going to prevent themselves from seeing it at all.

Brilliant!

From what I've read, the decision had nothing whatsoever to do with the movie itself, and was purely financial in nature.

The movies have been getting progressively worse since Prisoner Of Azkaban. Goblet Of Fire was ok, OOTP needed to be at least a half hour longer. Unless Guillermo Del Toro directs, I'm not holding out a lot of hope for the rest of the series.

Yes, but he wasn't doing it in New York. He was doing it in London, and they don't care about nudity as much as the American media.

You have two options: No Hope and Bob Hope. And Bob Hope...well...

David Yates, the director of OOTP and HBP is directing the final two as well.

bobug: Wow... Rewarding / reinforcement of positive behavior is a very proven method for training / eliciting a specific response.

Let me clarify and amend my strong statement a little bit. I completely understand the merits of a reward system as a useful tool for positive reinforcement. However, taking it too far -- where the child expects something every time they do something that is [IMO] a basic responsibility -- is much worse in the long run.

Ideally, you should instill within your child respect for the value of education, and encourage them to study on their own because they believe it will benefit them in the long run. Of course, I understand this is easier said than done.

It really does appall me when a parent is shocked that a reward is not generous or regular enough. At that point, it's an expectation, and not a bonus, and that's bad for you and the child. I think this is why a lot of kids suffer in the first year of college; they don't have parents around to 'force' or 'entice' them to study. They never developed the habit spontaneously.

We never got passages like this in Harry Potter:

"I made a quick assessment, stretching my body automatically, tensing and flexing my muscles. There was stiffness, and a lot of soreness, to it was true, but mostly there was the odd sensation that my bones all had become unhinged at the joints, and that I had changed halfway into the consistency of a jellyfish. It was not an unpleasant feeling."

But still, if the studios are that scared of twilight, then something is definitely afoot.

Cedric Diggory wins either way. Kinda.
