Hot rum todies are the best!

/d
//wanna bet their new effort consists of 8 remixed versions of Possum Kingdom?

One of the great unanswered questions of life is this: Why, 15 or so years after it came out, do most "alternative" radio stations continue to play Possum Kingdom at least once a day--even stations that play no other music from that era?

ApocoLypstick [TotalFark] 2008-08-20 01:05:41 PM
is it a good or bad thing that I've never heard of the 'todies'?

SockMonkeyHolocaust 2008-08-20 01:09:14 PM
Saw them sometime in the early 90s when All opened up for them. Distinctly unremarkable set except for when they played that Possum Kingdom song and it just really stood out against all their other stuff.

RetroGnome 2008-08-20 01:13:54 PM
Great, now i'm going to have Possum Kingdom stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

I never have either. I have, however, heard of the Toadies.

RetroGnome: Great, now i'm going to have Possum Kingdom stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

Over the last few of years, we've had an invasion of possums in my neighborhood. About every 6 months or so, a possum will pass through and decide to start hanging out in our yard--when that happens, we trap the things in a big cage trap and take them across the river and let them go, before they take up residence under the house (as they have done once or twice in the past). Whenever one of us--my wife, my kid, or I--happens to see one in the yard, it's become a tradition to announce the arrival of a new possum by simply coming into the house and mimicing that bass break in the middle of Possum Kingom: "doo doo DOO doo, doo doo DOO doo, doo doo doo DOO DOO DOO DOO doo." Yeah, the goddamn thing does stick in one's head for some reason.

Awesome.

They are coming town in November, I'll have to make sure to catch them then.

I do not know...I love the song, but it's not even close to their best. If you're gonna play The Toadies, and I have no problem with that programming decision, at least mix it up - there's nothing "alternative" about playing the same damn song over and over.

My guess would be - Because they're farking awesome!

But yeah...Possum Kingdom is overplayed. Some XM stations mix it up quite a bit with Tyler or I Come From the Water. Hell...I think PK is my least favorite.

Oh, they're alive alright. They've been in litigation for the last 7 years.

BTW, there's a live recording of Possum Kingdom that almost absolves them of their utterly derivative grunge work in the '90s.

I just saw in the paper that Everclear, Soul Asylum and Cracker are playing a show together. I think we've reach that point.

Hey, just saw them not to long ago, opened up with the Lions. Lions were rockin!

I might be the only person with both of their albums. Pumped about the tour, going when they hit DC.

Possum Kingdom is one of the best songs of the 90's hands down. Dark, twisted, catchy, with a great riff.

ApocoLypstick: is it a good or bad thing that I've never heard of the 'todies'?

It's bad, they were pretty good. A lot better live than on album.
Cyberluddite: One of the great unanswered questions of life is this: Why, 15 or so years after it came out, do most "alternative" radio stations continue to play Possum Kingdom at least once a day--even stations that play no other music from that era?

I have to agree about Possum Kingdom, it's initial success was just as puzzling to me as it's unbelievable longevity has been. I also do not get why goth kids liked it. I understand that it was supposedly about vampires or something but it really is one of their weaker songs. Every time I saw them live there were always a handful of goths standing around and acting like they were bored while they were playing all of their good songs and then they would bust out their radio hit and they would go nuts, pogoing along with all of the frat guys.

Big fan of the Toadies. Picked up their new album earlier today. Got a large portion of their music on CD, and their rarer material on MP3. So far this CD is decent, but it'll take a few listens for me to warm up to it, I'm sure.

I might be one of the only ones who liked Hell Below/Stars Above. Hell Below/Stars Above, the song, is one of my favorite songs in the past 10 years.

I just saw them a few weeks ago at Lollapalooza. They sounded great, easily one of my favorite performances of the weekend.

Really old Toadies video (^), and one of their better songs.

This (new window) was always my favorite tune of theirs.

You know what? Scratch that. This (new window) was always my favorite, but "Away" is good too.

My brother lost a fishing pole there about 25-30 years ago. You are correct, we were disappointed.

THIS.

loved Cracker but could have done without Everclear and Dave Pirner.

i had a friend that lived in Minneapolis in Soul Asylum's hey day. Cody is a true punk rocker. i have heard more great bands that i had never heard of before thanks to Cody. Acid Bath and Operation Ivy just to name two, and there are so many more.
anyway Cody is hanging out in a record store in Minneapolis, and Pirner walks up to him unsolicited and brags about the fact he is in the band Soul Asylum and offers Cody an autograph.
Cody's response. no farking thanks man, get farked.

/i still laugh every time he tells that story.

Gangway Fathead: Better than Ezra!

One of my favorite things I've ever seen on fark was this:

1. Better than Ezra
2. Ezra
3. Jake
4. Less Than Jake

I have no idea anymore of the context or the poster, but it makes me giggle to this day.

Hell, KROQ in L.A. still plays a whole crapload of the 90's stuff, not just Possum Kingdom.

Sadly, none of the bands I like that disbanded in the 90s (Oingo Boingo, Jellyfish) are likely to reunite. =(

happydude45 2008-08-21 12:51:54 AM
The new album is really good. I saw them back when they were still playing local clubs, before their albums came out, & they were really good back then. By the way, the new bassist is from Hagfish - topnotch punk rock & great live too.

I'm baffled. I listened to a lot of rock in the 90s, I even had a Seven Mary Three album that didn't have Cumbersome on there (I'm not proud, just honest), but I swear to God I have never heard Possum Kingdom before today. I knew the band, I knew the name of the song, but I had to Youtube it to remember it. Now I'm listening to it and I swear I've never heard this before. This was really a hit? Of sorts?
