(YouTube) Video Phil Lynott would have turned 59 today. Probably just as well he went before the wave of Irish-African bass players flooded the market. "Jailbreak" live in 1983   (youtube.com) divider line 28

"Are there any ladies here tonight with a little Irish in them?"

Gotta love Phil

When I lived in Dublin, they used to have a "Vibe for Philo" every year at Slattery's. I'm guessing they still do it.

Loads of local bands would get together and play Thin Lizzy songs all night. Loads of fun.

Great songwriter. Very underrated band. Their records still hold up very well, and have a wide range from sweet pop to ferocious metal.

NYRBill: the statue is on Grafton Street, Dublin, Ireland.

Bukharin: What's cooler than that?

All the comments about ridiculous stuff on this site, and this is all Phil Lynott gets.

Crap. If I had known that was there, I would have made an effort to see it while I was in Dublin.

Watch the film ONCE. When the guy is recruiting a back-up band for his album, and he meets these street musicians in front of the statue. When he asks them to join, they say something like 'Do you play any lizzy? 'cause that's all we know.'

I like this song too.

I know it's tedious for me to post youtube links to songs that everybody already knows. But I'm a recent fan. If I weren't so dirt poor I'd go out and buy all their albums.

Growing up, I had so much classic rock shoved down my throat, I ignorantly lumped Thin Lizzy into the big muddy pool of generic stadium rock. They were so much more than that though. Balls out brilliant, sexy, poetic rock 'n roll.

After getting into Thin Lizzy. It dawned on me that some of Iggy's early solo stuff is very Thin Lizzy-esque.

I bought their Jailbreak album years ago thinking
man, jailbreak and TBABIT are two farking awes songs
so the rest of this album is also going to be great!

I was sorely disappointed.
I just can't get into lizzy

oops

forgot to say that bassist lead singers are too far and few between

BTW, I saw the lizzy on July 4, 1979 (new window).

They farkin' rocked.

(before you ask if you clicked the link: hated Journey, UFO was great, but J. Geils stole the show, the rest was unmemorable)

Here's a link to a great 1977 TL live set (new window) from Wolfgang's Valut (reg required but is free)

I'm sure they most certainly do if his mum has anything to say about it. She's still quite active in promoting his memory.

/Met her last year in Dublin while on business. Wonderful woman..

If you can't appreciate the amazing versatility of Lynott as a songwriter (which was the real brilliance of Lizzy) then you don't deserve to be into Lizzy. You bought "Jailbreak" and didn't like "Emerald" or "Cowboy Song"? Man...pearls before swine.

Thin Lizzy were the greatest band ever!
Nice to see a greenlight for this...
Check out more than "Jailbreak" though if you are interested, as personally it's not my favourite of theirs.. so many great songs...
Lynott was a genius and a really nice guy who loved his supporters...
His mother is a saint...

/Philo is sadly missed... Remembering...

Just got off the treadmill. Had "Rosalie" from the Live and Dangerous album cranked up to max volume. RIP and thanks for the great music, Phil.

Lizzy rules. Phil is one of the coolest farkers to ever stroll this planet.

You should have all of their albums. Every one. Start with Live and Dangerous.

Live and Dangerous, Life Live, and Wild One: the Best of Thin Lizzy.

Man, love the live cuts of Rosalie, Whiskey in the Jar, Waiting for an Alibi, and Jailbreak.

I am a firm believer that "BLACK ROSE" is the finest rock and roll album ever produced.

Thin Lizzy is awesome, killer riffs, dual guitars, awesome songwriting, love em!
Got into them some 20 years ago on the way back from a Joe Walsh concert, crammed in the backseat of a friends mustang, broken leg in a cast wedged between the front seats, floating along on some killer windowpane. Cowboy Song hooked me. Good times...
There's a good documentary out there on Phils life and untimely death, pops up on history channel or bio or something every once in a while. Must see.

Yeah, about that Irish-African thing. Not so much. Irish-Brazilian is more on target.

Lots of blacks in Brazil....yes of African descent, but not the same.

Been a fan since the mid-70s, still always have at least one CD of theirs in my car at all times.
