Radiohead is one of those bands that I know in my heart is brimming with talent, but I could just never get into them. This, however, is pretty damned fantastic.

I like the Smiths cover from that same session.

I heart Radiohead.

They're not even really playing you can see the drummer goes out of synch halfway through.

So was "Ceremony" officially a Joy Division or a New Order song? My copy of it appears on a New Order compilation, but it sounds like Curtis on vocals.

It was originally a Joy Division song, but New Order really made the song awesome. Subby is just being a hipster.

This was from a live webcast with which they had loads of A/V issues, including (if memory serves) loss of audio for nearly the entire second half for US viewers. So yes, you do see some sync issues when you watch the thing.

*blinks*

they both were excellent at what they did, which, after new order's first album, was different. so this "better" stuff is saying ribs are better than steak, when in fact both are sublime

I've currently got the recent Joy Division documentary DVD here, and they briefly discuss how Hooky came to his style. In rehearsing, Ian apparently took notice of how much more present the bass was when PH played in a higher register and told him to "keep doing that!" A very nice doc, by the way, with lots of extra interview clips on the DVD. Some great anecdotes mixed throughout, for instance one about Ian meeting William Burroughs in Paris -- that one's especially funny.

For you Radiohead fans, you might want to check out Neil Finn's Seven Worlds Collide concert DVD from '01, which features Phil Selway and Ed O'Brien in the band. Here they are (also with Johnny Marr) playing "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" -- while we're on the subject of covers. Ed gets to cut loose a bit on "Suffer Never" (with Neil's brother Tim on drums instead of Phil, oddly) and here's Johnny Marr doing a nice version of "Down On The Corner" with the band.

Radiohead is one of the most overrated bands on earth. I am not saying that they are bad, but they aren't awesome as so many seem to believe.

They should shy away from butchering the music of their elders.

How, precisely, did that constitute a "butchering" in your book of what is and isn't awesome?

Radiohead is the best band in the world. I will report back here after I see them near Seattle tomorrow with full details of their unimaginable glory.

it's not a bad cover, but it's a carbon copy - like a tribute band. it never sounds like radiohead. They just copy the mechanics.
Also - try not to think of Joy Division and New Order as the same band.
Bonus for anyone who knows New Order's full name.DrBenway: CrotchBeard: Peter Hook is one one very underrated bass player, if you ask me.

I haven't seen that yet. Did you like it? I can't put my finger on it, but I have some hesitancy about that one, maybe it's vaguely something about Corbijn, I don't know... But it does have Samantha Morton in it, so there's that. I liked 24 Hour Party People's take on the scene quite a bit -- very funny, but they handled Ian's situation well, and Sean Harris was very good. So what was your impression of the doc? I may watch it again tonight, actually... had it for 3 weeks, need to send it back.

you lose half your credibility points for not knowing it's technically a New Order cover. (it's New order's debut single, but written by Ian Curtis)

CrotchBeard: Peter Hook is one one very underrated bass player, if you ask me.

This x100.

The top rock bass players are sometimes overlooked for whatever reason. Hooky is an incredible musician with a wonderful sense of tone and melody. He easily had the best stage presence of anyone in either Joy Division or New Order. When I last saw them about 20 years ago with New Order, they played Ceremony. He busted out with a hallow body bass and full on fuzz tone. He kicked the crap out of that song.

Top 5 bass players in my lifetime (personal, no order, so far)

Hooky
Tony Levin
Paul McCartney
The Ox
Roger Waters

danduran 2008-08-20 02:29:50 AM
Written by Joy Div, but released by New Order - the single (the 12-inch at least) has Bernard on vocals.

I'd like to add David J of Bauhaus to that list. He came up with some riffs that make my head asplode in a good way.

Agreed. I've seen L&R 7 times or so and he really is an awesome player. He was a little sloppy at Coachella but that's probably to be expected at this point. Back in the day he nailed it every time I saw them.

This is one of the all-time perfect songs. Every note and lyric is perfect and couldn't be changed. Even the farked-up recording from "Still" is good.

BadJayhawk 2008-08-22 11:11:54 PM
I can't decide between asking for this or "Atmosphere" to be played at my wake. But then I won't be there. Maybe something a little more upbeat...

/will always love Joy Division
//radiohead doesn't exactly suck.
