It's funny, the song is from 79 yet is seen as a quintessential 80s song. Even how the band is dressed fits the 80s. In a sense they, and a few others, brought in the 80s.

It also helped launch Weird Al into superstardom, didn't it?

Great guitar solo, indeed.

The Knack was just basically a great rock & roll band, & those two first albums are classics.

frostus: Much much better version.

Even better.

Lets go with a NSFW tag on this one. Sorry I couldn't find a video clip.

Yes, yes it does get old. "Good Girls Don't", on the other hand, is timeless.

My sharona gets exceedingly old.

My favorite knack song has always been "your number or your name", it was on my playlist a few years ago when I was in college working nights, driving a forklift.

Of course, that song was sandwiched in between "natural born killaz" by ice cube and "creeping death" by metallica.

Get The Knack is one of the best pop records every. Good hooks, excellent vocal arrangements and some seriously good guitar work.

It was cool to hate them back in the day, since they weren't, well, Led Zeppelin, but I (secretly) thought they were great.

True dat. Very musical, totally non-wanking, and classic.

In the early 90s I had friends who ran a weekly jam at NYC's China Club on Wednesdays. They said "come down this week, the Knack is gonna show". I went down to see them, expecting to see "My Sharona" etc etc.

They came out and played 3 classic rock songs, finishing with "Are You Experienced". Surprisingly, it was awesome. These guys could really play their instruments well.

agreed on the great guitar solo - it irritates me to no end when radio stations play the shorter version of the song that cuts half of it out.

It's even WORSE when Sirius does it? Why are they ever playing the short versions of songs, there are no commercials to squeeze in!

fargin bastages

I have never heard a radio edit of any song on Sirius.

I used to have a "Get The Knack" songbook. It would be worth dozens of dollars today.

Their second album was weak, but the first single, Baby Talks Dirty, takes the prize as the dirtiest Knack song.

Absolutely perfect solo for the song. Totally nailed it.

And over in the UK, the torch was being passed from the Boomtown Rats to Sir Cliff (I'm assuming first name only is needed here, much like Patsy, Hank, or Elvis.)

Good Girls Don't is far dirtier.

"Til she's sitting on your face"

I was only about 8 yrs old when I bought this record, but even then, I knew I was listening to something very filthy indeed.

Awesome song and band. Bought the record when it came out and still listen to it even after nearly 3 decades.

It's a shame Bruce Gary is no longer alive. He was the perfect combination of Ringo Starr and Keith Moon. My Sharona is hardly his best work -- the rest of the tracks on Get The Knack are among the best power-pop drumming ever recorded.

That friggin' album was recorded in 11 days for $17,000. Try that today, you ProTools wannabees.

I was just about to make a similar comment. If you know what you're doing, amount of time and money spent in the studio, doesn't really have anything to do with how good things sound.

I think her bio answers your question:

"I don't know very many things, and I am not especially smart, but I probably know more about rock and roll than you do. Don't take that the wrong way, it's just a fact. That's why it's usually only music threads I get my Irish up in."

"My Sharona" - love it or hate it, there's one reason why it and The Knack will always get a pass in my book: it was the song that proved to be the mortal blow for disco.

danduran 2008-08-20 02:34:56 AM
I always remember the Knack, and that debut album, as being the definitive 'one good song, the rest rubbish'. After this thread, I think I'll give the record another shot.
