Douche bags ... the whole lot of them.
Why are they even making 'music' anymore?
Ever since the Black Album and them becoming poster boys for the RIAA they should have just hung it up.

This just in: Rich people like to buy big houses with big yards and surround them by fences.

He bought the land, he should be able to do whatever he wants to do with it.

What does their music have anything to do with this?
It's a property rights issue. If douchebags a few idiots didn't bother to mess up his property, everyone else (bikers, hikers, horse riders) would still be able to use the trail they loved to use.

Don't blame Mr. Hetfield for protecting his property.

stormdragon 2008-08-19 06:25:13 AM
Depending on how close the trail is to his home or any other structures, a good compromise could be to have the fence built closer to said structures, but leaving the trail accessible to the public.

Everyone wins.

Otherwise, yeah, James has every right to protect his property from vandalism.

labman [TotalFark] 2008-08-19 06:48:14 AM
If you wanted to keep it as public land, you should buy it yourself or petition your state to buy it.

It's his land and he can do what he wants with it. And since he apparently bought it in 1999, he didn't just buy the place and immediately lock it down. He had a problem with vandalism over an eight year period and shut off access.

achtungpv 2008-08-19 09:20:56 AM
Hetfield GAVE the county over 400 acres for public use and gave up the rights to develop a subdivision in order to preserve open space and they biatch about a trail? Ungrateful twats.

He traded away the right to develop 44 homes on his property, which it had been zoned for, and gave an easement for 438 1/2 acres to be maintained as public space by the county.

degreeless 2008-08-19 09:24:44 AM
It's private property. I would build a fence to keep out the sandal-wearing hippies too. If someone gets "hurt" on his property, guess who's liable.

The guy paid for it, if they want public access, use public land and stay off other people's lawns.

metallica is no longer relevent

property rights continue to be relevent

california crunchies being whiney biatches remains typical

What I don't get is why they didn't just re-release Ride the Lightning every two years for the past 20.

And WTF is wrong with not paying for stuff I don't own or didn't create? I mean, if my neighbor was a furniture maker, and I kept going over to his house and taking his stuff, there's no farking way he'd have the right to sue me, so WTF is Metallica's problem?

And what are they doing getting old?!! Ah, that makes me sooooo angry!! The fact that Hetfield's voice doesn't sound like it did when he was 25!!! Who the fark does he think he is??1!!

If that was me, I would climb the fence & say something like "Hey, what gives your the right to put up a fence to keep me out, just to keep Mother Nature in."

I'm no theologian, but he's probably some kind of sinner for doing that.

I can't blame him either, but he's still a douchebag for handling it that way.

The douchebags are the people who think they have the right to use someone else's property however they want, when they want, and get all butthurt when the person who owns the property says no.

browntimmy 2008-08-19 02:58:54 PM
If someone tripped over his pink flamingo lawn ornament and sued, you idiots would still cry foul on Hetfield. "He didn't like Napster, so he's the stupid head."

was that a pun?

and my feelings on metallica have no relation to their views on napster

darkvstar 2008-08-19 03:45:08 PM
people have been openly using the paths for a century or more, which means there was a tacit agreement betweent the property owners and the public that the paths were public right-of-ways. in land law, the public has a case. if Mr Hetfield doesnt like this, he should sue his Title Company for not revealing this in the title search when he bought the property. The "public" could take this to court and win.

Am I an idiot for running together every snotty repsonse I expected to see in this thread? Or because you thought I was serious? Either way, I guess my "humor" didn't work.

I think its funny the Granola Mafia is getting all worked up in a tizzy over this......

They should just put the same fence completely around the perimeter of his fence and tell him to chopper out......

And the sign said anybody caught trespassing would be shot on sight
So I jumped on the fence and yelled at the house, Hey! what gives you the right
To put up a fence to keep me out or to keep mother nature in
If God was here, he'd tell you to your face, man you're some kinda sinner
