Pretty harsh words from an anonymous thread poster and a music critic I've never heard of.

merlotguy [TotalFark] 2008-08-18 05:33:28 PM
I like David Byrne, you should try it out.

I hadn't heard about this. I'm glad I now have.

platkat: Pretty harsh words from an anonymous thread poster and a music critic I've never heard of.

The review wasn't all that harsh. The way I see it, if the critic wasn't a rabid fan of either one and still gave it 3/5, I'll probably love it.

Bob_Laublaw: The review wasn't all that harsh.

If someone who considered himself an expert in my field referred to a colleague and me as "Tweedledee and Tweedledum", I don't think I'd be happy.

Wrong.

America is waiting for a message of some sort or another. I mean, yeah, well... what, whatcha gonna do?

In another country
With another name
Maybe things are different
Maybe they're the same

Well, they'll sell at least one copy. That album sounds awesome.

I read the review.

No will whatsover.

No will whatsover.

Absolutely no integrity.

A David Byrne/Brian Eno collaboration seems like a great idea to me.

Byrne has stayed artistically interesting and relevant for 30 years. He will never put out an album in which I have no interest. I was considering making fun of you, sub, but upon reflection, I just feel sorry for you. If you can't get into David Byrne, I don't wannna know ya.

Not liking the Talking Heads is like not liking vegetables. There is something wrong with you, your parents did a poor job raising you, and you probably have poo difficulties.

SnarfVader 2008-08-18 09:47:31 PM
Perhaps the irony, Subby, is that your headline will increase the sales of the album by pointing it out to people who might not have noticed it otherwise. Not by much, but it's a better irony than your headline.

RodneyToady [TotalFark] 2008-08-18 11:06:57 PM
I hope there's some Fripp on that album...

LeafyGreens 2008-08-18 11:28:10 PM
I think Subby feels safer deciphering the nuances of Nickleback over his hi-fi set.

Somehow, I didn't know about this release. I will buy it ASAP.

Would you like a chance to correct yourself?

David Byrne is awesome. I used a song that he released under Creative Commons in one of my movies, and it made the movie.

I haven't forgiven Brian Eno for farking up Paul Simon's latest album.

DoctorCal 2008-08-18 11:51:48 PM
Presales (WTFTI) start...on Wednesday (for my local venue)!

$52.50 a head.

No thank you.

Oh, and no tour dates in WA? BOO!!!

Gunny Highway 2008-08-18 11:58:12 PM
Actual Farking: No thank you.

That was always my answer when asked if I wanted some vegies. Never worked though. My mother on the other hand would never get that answer out of me when she asked if I wanted to listen to the Heads.

Just got the album. On the first track but it sounds like some solid stuff.

There is. You have to take the CD and fripp it over to hear it, though.

*shrug* Suit yourself. What's a stray article between friends? :)

Ugh...that's a lot of reading to figure out what is ironic about this. Is there a Cliff Notes version of Fark so I can just look at the funny pictures and not have to actually read stuff.

DoctorCal 2008-08-19 12:22:56 AM
I've never heard of Jay Dee, but I'm queuing some up because I have a hunch it's good stuff.

Weigard 2008-08-19 12:47:12 AM
Oh man this is exciting.

Melquiades [TotalFark] 2008-08-19 12:55:40 AM
It's not as good as Talking Heads - obviously - but, on first hearing it sounds better than a lot of Byrne's solo material. I don't think I'll be listening to it as often as Remain In Light or Speaking In Tongues (or Rei Momo), but probably more often than I would listen to Grown Backwards or David Byrne).

There, I've said it.

sonnyboy11 2008-08-19 01:00:55 AM
Remain In Light is one of the greatest albums ever made. The only reason you would not think this is if you had not heard it. Or you're just a twit. But definitely one of those two choices.

/will check this out

for good or for awesome 2008-08-19 01:01:29 AM
I got to see David Byrne at a book signing once. I'm pretty sure he thought I was a jackass.
Never meet your heros.

This is not my beautiful house! How did I get here?!

/I love Radio David Byrne
//Talking Heads rocked
///Even more once Bernie joined in

DrBenway [TotalFark] 2008-08-19 01:19:32 AM
If Eno was touring with him, I'd be there in less than an instant. Byrne by himself I'm less interested in.

carmody 2008-08-19 02:03:45 AM
I still like My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. About time for a follow-up.

DOW 2008-08-19 04:11:10 AM
Brian Eno. He's responsible for the sound U2 and Coldplay keep recycling in order to stay popular.

Byrne's pretty talented, though.

/Eno's the guy created The Microsoft Sound
//... probably only way to get an audience to listen to him

Glenechocreek 2008-08-19 04:17:12 AM
The evil axis of Eno/Byrne/Fripp was all-mighty to me in the early 80's. Finally, there was thinking-man's music with a groove.

Like with all the rest, the muse did flee them. But, for a time, the flame of creation burned brightly with those characters, and you couldn't go a block in Lower Manhattan without hearing one of them issuing forth from a loft, gallery, cafe, or book store. It was grand.

Nice Tuesday morning listen so far.....

I read Byrne's livejournal frequently; he tends to have brilliant, insightful, and unique ways of looking at things, and his writing is always thought-provoking.

Awesome album. Pulled me in immediately. Nice too see them collaborating again.

And this autumn Roxy Music releases their long-awaited Eno reunion album.

craigdamage 2008-08-19 08:10:36 AM
Byrne and Eno's "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" is by far one of the single most profoundly original and utterly brilliant records ever conceived.

It was recorded in 1979. Released several years prior to "digital sampling" and this funky, dark, ambient and copy and paste style masterpiece is still NOT-DATED.

It is "progressive" in the most true meaning of that word.
Not just composition, but recording and production.

There are more diverse and stunningly original elements packed in that album than anything else then and now.

He's also the guy who created Music For Airports. I could walk through the fiery depths of hell and come out unscathed if I had MFA on headphones. It was the music my wedding guests were seated to, and 1/1 will play at my funeral as well.

When I want to stab people on the subway for sitting on the outside seat with no occupant inside and ignoring the elderly who would like them to move over, or the people who fart in your general vicinity while eating a bag of Munchos, I listen to Thursday Afternoon.

It's one of the 20 albums that I wish to hear immediately prior to breathing my last [a grande compliment].

Yup. That's what I thought. Byrne is coming here to the CA Bay area and I'm passing on it.

For those of you not familiar, Eno
wore boa feathers and makeup in Roxy Music
created New Wave - the single "Seven Deadly Finns"
created New Age - "Another Green World"
created Ambient - "Music For Airports" as an example
produced The Talking Heads, U2, Devo
did this "Bush of Ghosts" that influenced sampling
wrote a fabulously entertaining book "A Year, With Swollen Appendices" - that reads like hard copy HTML
helped found The Long Now

/You say you are possessed?

"Mountain of Needles" is my favorite track from the "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" album. Probably my favorite instrumental of all.

What is so stirring and somehow seemingly intellectual about this pure instrumental piece is not just the execution of sounds,it is the CHOICES OF SOUNDS.

Pure genius.

swahnhennessy 2008-08-19 12:34:22 PM
Eddie Hazel: Seriously?

Yes. He wrote two tracks on the album, plays keyboards on the rest. Won't be touring with them, though.

sunlion: I read Byrne's livejournal frequently; he tends to have brilliant, insightful, and unique ways of looking at things, and his writing is always thought-provoking.

Except for when he's writing about stuff he doesn't know a damn thing about, like, oh, say, 20th century opera. He posted about Zimmermann's Die Soldaten a few months ago and he got mauled on the opera boards I go to, just ripped a new one. Shorter David Byrne: Waaaah! It doesn't have tunes that I can hum on the way out, like Carmen, it's not music! Waaaaah!

Bullshiat, total utter bullshiat. Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry were cutting and joining and manipulating music and sounds on tape to do music concrete in the late 40's/early 50's, before those two dilettantes were even born, Stockhausen had created Gesang der Junglinge in 1955 and on and on. Hell, every avant-garde classical composer worth their salt in the 50's and 60's had one or two pieces like that, doing what those two dweebs were doing in the 80's. Who do you think Paul McCartney and John Lennon got their ideas for The Carnival of Light and Revolution 9 from, Byrne and Eno? I'm sick of these two minor talents getting the credit for doing something that was already long passe in the classical/avant-garde field by the time they got around to doing it.
