We tried everything we could think of, but no -- it's a word that insults people beyond words if aimed at them, and makes everyone else around extremely uncomfortable. No other racial slur has that power... no other word, period, has the power of that one. It's weird.

We should probably find a way to take some of the power from it, though I have no idea how someone would do that.

A few years ago, my boyfriend had some drunk asshole throw a can of beer at him while his band was playing on stage. *I* almost jumped on the guy's back and beat him down, but sat on my hands since he made the guy feel smaller than an ant by putting him down in front of all his friends.

I'm so sick of the word. My second job is manned mostly by African-Americans of the hood persuasion. Every other word is "n-----". I heard one guy use it for five words out of eight in one sentence. The "fighting words doctrine" is a long-standing limitation to the 1st amendment and is also considered a valid legal defense to relatively minor physical altercations in many many jurisdictions here in the US.

And might I add, rightly so. I have no problems whatsoever when someone asks, nay BEGS, for trouble and then gets it. If you start slinging racial epithets at people I have no problem with them enforcing the social order with you right there on the spot with a good 'ol fashioned ass whuppin. You'd have earned it.

It's stupid. Ghetto black people use it to refer to themselves all the time. But if a white person uses it then it's like channeling the spirits of dead clansmen against the spirits of dead slaves. The link provided outlined that it was not covered under free speech, which Hate Speech is not, which given the racial terminology used, this would fall under.

However, the people are not meant to carry out the punishment, or the prevention cited in the doctrine, which is what occured. Furthermore, this was not a minor altercation as to be classified as Third Degree assault, from what I've read on a quick Google trip, requires substantial bodily harm. Mind you he did this with a Microphone.

This wasn't some guy getting knocked down by a punch or two outside of a bar.

Now, to clarify, again, I think the guy is a tard for his statement. I think the singer is a tard for the way he acted, and I think he's a tard for attempting to excuse his actions.

One is within the guidelines of hate speech, the other is within the guidelines of assault. Making light of the situation because race is involved undermines the effectiveness of Justice.
