Some dumb pop tart recently covered Paint It Black. It was one of the worst things I have ever heard.

Or those jackasses that redid the NWA song 'boyz in the hood'.

Career move on par with McLean Stevenson's departure from MASH.

Dynamite Hack redid the Boyz in the Hood song, and to be honest, as a white and nerdy(in every sense, not just Weird Al) hip-hop fan, I thought it was pretty funny.

"Alien Ant Farm" can be blamed for that one.

I didn't see them slam Celine Dion for her version of "You Shook Me All Night Long" -- or was I clicking the next button too quickly?

The fact remains that whomever told Celine Dion she could sing, was lying to her!

I'm trying so hard to forget that I even knew it existed, let alone actually WATCHING it.

Despite the click-whoring of the while article, I rather agree
with all the choices, especially the Whitney Houston rendition*
of I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU.

*Rendition used in its 'Lets Kidnap the song, take it to
a neutral 3rd world country and waterboard it until it admits to
having masterminded the destruction of The World Trade Center; sense.

Yet another list of terrible covers, yet another list that doesn't include Fred Durst's "Behind Blue Eyes."

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener is probably the guy who submitted this thread. No idea about that Tishero Mifumo's Letter Opener guy, must be a Chinese knock-off brand.

Too lazy to click through all the pages so can someone tell me if Duran Duran's "911 is a joke" on there?

Duran Duran is my all time favorite band, but that cover is just painfully bad.

Lloyd Braun 2008-08-18 07:44:52 PM
The best cover songs? All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix, Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley and Superstar by Sonic Youth.

The worst? American Pie by Madonna, I'm A Believer by Smash Mouth and Lean On Me by Club Nouveau.

What pisses me off about cover songs is that young fans think the artist covering the song wrote it and deserves praise. Case in point: Cheryl Crow's The First Cut Is The Deepest. Great song. Poorly covered. I've heard so many people say Cheryl Crow's such a great songwriter for writing that song. Ugg. Cheryl Crow sucks.

Most of those songs already sucked.

American Pie, Sympathy for the Devil, My Generation and maybe one or two others weren't ALREADY crappy songs.

Seriously, which is more irrevelant, someone doing a cover of Take On Me or the fact the Jonas Brothers are the ones who did it?

How about Limp Bizkits cover of "Behind Blue Eyes"?

I don't know what lead them to believe they had anywhere near the soul needed to do that song justice.

Roger Daltry nailed it the first time, all anyone else can do with it is bad karaoke.

I hated Springsteen's cover of Manfed Mann's "Blinded By The Light".

Anything and everything by Nouvelle Vague. A sampling...

Blue Monday
Love Will Tear Us Apart
Guns of Brixton
The Killing Moon
Dancing With Myself
Heart of Glass
Bela Lugosi's Dead
Sweet and Tender Hooligan (seriously, WTF!?!?!?!?!?)

To throw a little disdain at someone other than Nouvelle Vague, I'll also nominate Natalie Merchant's "Everyday is Like Sunday".

Changing the iconic line of "My Generation" is tantamount to covering up Michaelangelo's David's dangly bits.

My Lord, don't do covers of iconic songs. The best you can hope for is a cheap imitation that gets laughed at. Cover lesser known album cuts. And don't pretend you wrote them.

But mostly, don't be the Jonas Brothers. At that point you're in a vat of suck that only grows bigger and swallows everything surrounding it. If you don't have the range to hit the high note that defines the song, just don't bother. Damn, now I've gone and got myself all in a farking tizzy.

A Perfect Circle's version of "Imagine" is unlistenable. In fact, that whole album is a huge hunk of shiat.

I just wanna say...

on American Idull this year, that Carly chick (the hot Irish one) did a cover of Cyndi Lauper's I Drove All Night that was so good, I woulda gone out & bought it. Paid actual cash for it instead of (hypothetically) pirating it. Her cover was so infinitely superior to Celine Dion's version that CD's shouldn't ever be spoken of again.

And pretty much anytime someone covers the Who...I am looking at you Durst

Wow, I knew which version this would be before I clicked.

One of these days I'll get precisely drunk enough to do that rendition at some unfortunate kareoke bar.

/Need an accomplice to do the drummer part.
