Awesome, they actually put "The Brazilian" on the list. I love that song, hell that entire album. But why did they have to pick YYZ? Everyone picks that, and it isn't the best one. How about "Leave That Thing Alone" or "La Villa Strangiato"

Iron Maiden: Losfer Words is the first one to come to mind.

A good list, but, no "Fire on High" or "Frankenstein"?

I can't see this at work, but they did put "Intersteller Overdrive" on there, right?

No effin Pimpf.

For shame, Onion.

I once made a mixtape with lots of songs like these.
Fugazi gave me about 4 of them.

Glad to see Orion got a nod.

Metallica didn't always suck ya know.

DandamanFL: Jessica by The Allman Brothers.

I'm not sure that the classic-era Allmans fit the definition of "bands who usually sing." I don't have Eat A Peach and Fillmore East in front of me, but I can easily think of several tunes off both albums that are flat-out instrumentals (and stuff like "Blue Sky," which is an honorary instrumental). Still, "Jessica" is a great tune regardless of how you slice it.

List is missing: Springsteen's "Paradise by the 'C'".

rocknrollpetrol 2008-08-18 03:06:25 PM
i'm not a huge hendrix fan, but his woodstock improvisation (new window) is pretty killer.

For those unable to see this due to their location (work), the list is as follows:

1. Teenage Fanclub, "Is This Music?"
2. Pavement, "Heckler Spray"
3. Rush, "YYZ"
4. Cake, "Arco Arena"
5. Fugazi, "Brendan #1"
6. New Order, "Elegia"
7. Led Zeppelin, "Moby Dick"
8. The Who, "The Ox"
9. Elliott Smith, "Kiwi Maddog 20/20"
10. Paul McCartney, "Momma Miss America"
11. The Commodores "Machine Gun"
12. Uncle Tupelo, "Sandusky"
13. Eagles, "Journey Of The Sorcerer"
14. The Smiths, "Money Changes Everything"
15. Minutemen, "Cohesion"
16. Genesis, "The Brazilian"
17. Buzzcocks, "Walking Distance"
18. Iron Maiden, "Transylvania"
19. Metallica, "Orion"
20. Public Image Ltd., "Graveyard"
21. Blue Cheer, "Magnolia Caboose Babyfinger"
22. Archers Of Loaf, "Smokin' Pot In The Hot City"
23. Galaxie 500, "Instrumental"
24. Pink Floyd, "Interstellar Overdrive"

From England "Red"

Even though it's not strictly an instrumental, I vote for the second half of Squealer by AC/DC.

Gulper Eel [TotalFark] 2008-08-18 03:16:35 PM
Third_Uncle_Eno: I would've preferred "Los Endos" or even "After the Ordeal".

"Los Endos" has a few words from "Supper's Ready", so..."Wot Gorilla?" and "Horizons".

Or "Ravine", if you want to go all minimalist.

King Kong. Book it. Done.

"Woodpecker from Mars" Faith No More
"Crackerjack" Clutch

/My two cents, er two songs that is

Me: "Eh, they're not going to put 'Is This Music?' by Teenage Fanclub on there."

AV Club: "Not only are we going to put it on the list, we're going to put it first and title the article after it."

Well, erm, way to go, AV Club. "Kickabout" is also a pretty good TF instrumental.

Machine Gun very under rated in my opinion.

Teenage Fanclub is great. I forget why I downloaded their stuff about six months ago, I still haven't figured it out, but man every new song is just delicious.

Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats
Second Home by the Sea
Naminanu
Submarine

Plus I think a *few* words shouldn't disqualify a song from 'instrumental' status. Anyway, point being that Genesis have plenty of better instrumentals than The Brazilian (although, admittedly, I enjoy the song a lot).

I would say after hearing The Main Monkey Business, that may very well be my favorite Rush instrumental... but La Villa Strangiato is a very close second.

nicoffeine 2008-08-18 03:58:17 PM
The great thing about Orion (and Call) is that Metallica is at it's peak at the time they were made.

The Brazilian was my favorite track on Invisible Touch... the last "record" I ever bought.

CarnySaur 2008-08-18 04:02:55 PM
I'm partial to Roxy Music's "Tara", particularly the longer version they played on their reunion tour.

BLACK SABBATH-Rat Salad

Perhaps they aren't a band that usually sings, but any reference to instrumentals requires a mention of Misirlou by Dick Dale and the Deltones.

Just stopping by to make sure somebody already has this one covered...

//"Version" is a better instrumental IMO

Dugg for being....oops. It's on Fark, now. Mea culpa...

Like everyone else, I have my earth-shatteringly important additions:

The Who: "Sparks"
King Crimson: "Red", "Providence"
Santana: "Yours is the Light", "Incident at Neshabur"
(I know there's some mid-70s Earth, Wind, and Fire that should go here as well.)

doxonrox99 2008-08-18 04:56:48 PM
Journey's "Majestic" off of Evolution. It may have been the last instrumental they did.

/Do "AAAAAHHHH's" count as vocals?

I would also like to add that Frank Zappa has several to choose from. I personally am quite fond of "Rat Tomago" from Sheik Yerbouti

youve gotta be kidding with providence. how about 'fracture'?

ive always found the original completely unlistenable. i dig michael hamptons playing on the remake from 'one nation under a groove' though.
