Well, if you're going to attempt a coup d'état you should start with the head.

Ok, so he's a monarch...kings hold power through force of arms, because they are dictators, not democratically elected representatives. The traditional method for taking power away from a dictator is to kill him...

Royal families do not respect civil rights, democracy, human rights, or pretty much any law that gets in the way of the guy on top....

So just kill him and its done...isn't even murder since the king is inseparable from country...its just an act of war.

Better yet, go to him, offer him your alliegiance, ask him for a loan and when he says no you scream revolution and kill him....happens all the time in the real world.

I think this is funny....

"He's a real common guy, nice guy, very pleasant person. Not pushy," said Maxwell by phone from his home in Pukalani, Maui. "He's a nice guy and everything, but I think he's misguided. There's a lot of misguided people and it's sad."

No pun intended, right?

I wonder if there isn't some middle ground where we could retain Hawaii as a state but cede an island to such folk as want to re-establish a pre-colonial territorial identity. I am fascinated by the island's original culture, and support in principle anything that helps preserve and teach their original culture(s). Having said that, I see no way we'd ever give up the state. But like I said, maybe we can do something progressive that bridges the gap. Not exactly like an Indian reservation, but maybe some kind of extra-territorial preserve, where we agree on some different options for self-determination. Not that in this day and age we can turn the clock back that far. Even if we had never taken Hawaii in the first place, its culture would have significantly changed by now anyway, by trade, and by contact with, say Chinese an d Japanese territorial expansion. Whatever "native" government would have been like, left uninterrupted from Lilly's time, we can't really imagine fully, but it would look more like a modern state than not, I'm guessing. So maybe this is all for nothing, and just about some folks feeling left out of the tourism money. Or maybe I'm just blowing bubbles, hell I dunno. I just want everybody to be happy, and there's no way to have that one hundred percent. Call it white liberal man's guilt, or whatever. I imagine there are more people like myself who would like to do *something* about this, without having to go to either extreme. But what would that be?

Give them Bikini Atoll? Oh wait, that won't work... we kind'a took it from someone else and nuked it.

Any Pie Left

Can we drop the insinuation that placing a culture that practices magical thinking and technological stagnation on par with the achievements of Western culture somehow represents "progress"? A dumbed-down false equivalence serves nobody well. Of course, "progressives" believe that progress mandates a gigantic, all-powerful government, punitive tax levels, and the prioritization of only a subset of civil liberties rubber-stamped by bureaucrats.

Ya know, we'll never add another state because, darn it, we just like the nice round number 50. However, since people are wondering if and when we're ever going to add Puerto Rico to our ranks, why don't we just make an even trade?

The island's original culture did not include a monarchy. And this multiple convicted felon is no king.

MadAzza: The island's original culture did not include a monarchy. And this multiple convicted felon is no king.

That kind of depends on what you mean by 'original'.

If you mean the culture when first contact was made with the West, then you are not really correct. However, the ali'i (the Hawaiian royalty) pretty much were imports from Tahiti to a culture that was primarily made up of commoners from the Marquesas. So, in effect, the original culture really didn't have a monarch per se, until a ruling class emigrated to the islands in the years before contact.

Mouser 2008-08-17 11:55:03 PM
MadAzza: The island's original culture did not include a monarchy. And this multiple convicted felon is no king.

Actually, it did, and an aristocratic class as well, just like Europe's. Fortunately for the rest of the Hawaiians, the US is a Republic.

ferro_man 2008-08-17 11:58:03 PM
there are over 100 islands in the hawaiian island chain...only 8 of them are part of the state of hawaii...couldn't they just give him one of the islands that are not part of the state but part of the island chain?

Just let him open a Native Hawaiian Casino and he will probably be happy.

The islands were not united under a monarchy until Kamehameha I, who was able to "unite" the islands by force with Westerners' cannons. Kamehameha was no fool.

Man, I knew that group was an epic fail, but that's a GOOD one.

The last criminal conviction was in March 2001 for criminal trespassing and escape. In that case, court records show, Akahi pleaded no contest under the mistaken belief that he could ask for the case to be dismissed "based upon his Native Hawaiian rights."

BWAAA AHAHAHAHAHA
Where do these turkeys get this from?

You're welcome. I wish I could claim authorship, but it's the punchline of a very old joke. I never thought I'd ever be able to use it in any other context.

Brade 2008-08-18 12:52:43 AM
wow, beyond retarded...

"[Akahi] He's humble," Muller said.

yeah, except that he calls himself "majesty" and wants people to bow their heads and kiss his feet, yeah real f@k@n humble...

shieatheds piss me off... and this guy is pretty high on the shiat-head scale

this turd should have been just fined for trespassing. no special treatment for his shiat-head-esty.

Brade 2008-08-18 12:58:49 AM
and his majesty has made treaties with foreign governments... oh how "special"

gee, I wonder what self-interest other governments would have from separating USA and Hawaii, and letting Hawaii fall into the hands of a weak government ("his shiat majesty"), opening their militarily/economically strategic ports to the highest bidder.
