Considering most people's short attention spans, the revised letter will have more impact that the original letter.

ShawnDoc [TotalFark] 2008-08-17 08:21:12 PM
This is normal. Letter's to the Editor are often dramatically cut in order to make their point as quickly as possible so as not to take up too much space. No big deal.

Trimming letters is normal. But that letter was truncated to the point that the entire point of it was distorted or lost.

Yep. Newspapers do that stuff.

"For those who are "True Pro-Life" individuals, is it not clear where individuals like us should turn to fix many of the issues we hold dear to? In my view, it is clearly Barack Obama."

Cutting stuff out is normal, but that seems like a kinda important part of the letter to omit.

/Damn you liberal media!!!!!!1111!!!

I think it makes the letter better, unfettered by scattered matter chatter. Penis.

ohio just flipped to McCain. barry will be lucky to get NOMINATED, let alone compete in November.

Lawnchair 2008-08-17 08:59:21 PM
If the paper is going to trim someone's letter (and that one needed trimming), they should have to give the writer right of refusal to not have his name attached to the redacted version.

CravenMorehead 2008-08-17 09:03:26 PM
Removing content which alters the very purpose of the letter is not cool. Even if it was a pro-John McCain letter it would not be cool.

captain_napalm: ohio just flipped to McCain. barry will be lucky to get NOMINATED, let alone compete in November.

Oh my God... it flipped? Really? Well, that's that then. Damn. Sorry, Obama, you had a good run, but everyone knows that whatever position a state is in on August 17th is definitely what it will be in when November rolls around.

In all seriousness, while Ohio isn't "must-win" for Obama, without it he has to make sure that those projected wins in places like Colorado, Iowa, and New Mexico come to pass. Those three states can make up for Ohio if it does end up red like it did last time.

Oh, and of course he has to not lose any state Kerry won.

The Obama giddiness is starting to wear off, as anyone watching the polls from electoral-vote.com has seen. What was once a 314-vote blowout is now down to 275... as states flip back and forth, that will fluctuate quite a bit between now and November. There is no purpose in getting excited about any state flipping, until the candidates are more than just a few points apart there. Ohio's shown as 45-43 McCain. Expect that state to flip a few more times before November.

Never been, actually.

All I suggested was that maybe we don't need to greenlight every other post at Kos, especially ones biatching about how the Cleveland Plain Dealer edited some blogger's Important Political Statement.

Believe it or not, not everyone on the internet hangs out at either LGF or Kos.

Possibly. But the underreported story of this election is the MASSIVE organization the Obama campaign is building in every state. Polls can be interesting, advertisements can be fun, but at the end of the day, you've got to get people off their keisters on November 5th and get them to actually go and vote. And "ground troops" could make a HUGE difference in this area.

Okay, that letter needed to be edited in a major way, but its main point was to endorse a candidate. To leave the candidate endorsement out--I don't care who the candidate was--was corrupt. Hello?

Obama stepped to McCain's defense(p) when a voter criticized his Vietnam era record. A Naval aviator, McCain spent 5-1/2 years as a prisoner of war there after being shot down and badly wounded.

"Respectfully I'm going to disagree with you on McCain and his service," Obama said. "I think his service was honorable. He deserves respect."

~~~~~~
The Obama campaign, eager to make it known that it's responding forcefully to the new Swift-Boating book by Jerome Corsi, is jumping on a John McCain moment today where he appeared to sidestep an opportunity to condemn the book and its multiple falsehoods about Barack Obama.
Asked by a reporter today to comment on the book, McCain said(p): "Gotta keep your sense of humor," before his aides whisked him away.
STAY CLASSY McCAIN!!
I really don't feel all that bad for the submitter of the letter. If he wanted the newspaper not to edit his letter then he needed to be pithy. The editor is giving this person a forum for his thoughts to be shared with others. That forum has constraints and limits and if the writer can't make it easy for the editor to summarize those thoughts, the writer shares responsibility for poor summation..
Clearly, the editor chose differently than the writer would have, but if the writer had made they choice himself by writing a short letter, then it wouldn't have happened.
Frankly, if the writer convinced a number of pro-life people that they need to be more than single-issue,anti-abortion voters then he will have accomplished his goal to open them towards voting for Obama even without an explicit call-out to "gobama" published.
Still, if the writer really feels that the editor misrepresented him, then he can write them another letter akin to the following:
Dear Editor:
Thank you for printing my letter about what I think a "true pro-life" position is. I appreciate your publishing my perspective, but I feel an important aspect of my perspective was cut from the letter.
You correctly noted that I feel that to be "truly pro-life" means to be: anti-abortion, anti-unwanted-pregnancy, anti-death-penalty, anti-war, anti-poverty, pro-living-wage, pro-environment, pro-education, and pro-universal-health-care. But you failed to note that Obama is 85% in agreement with these positions and McCain only 15% in agreement. This is why I think people who are truly pro-life should vote for Obama.
I'd thank you kindly to share that with your readers.
Sincerely,
Disgruntled Writer
/Universal he used, for all I know Colonial82 is a woman
//Yes, the editor probably should have left a "gobama" in the final letter
///Following the "don't attribute to evil what can be attributed to stupidity" rule
////Irony police, please enjoy my long post about being pithy
Trap-Door Spider: It read like an abridged version of the Unibomber manifesto to me.
Not only am I fairly certain you've never read the Unibomber's manifesto, I'm pretty sure you didn't read the letter and I'm on the fence about you being able to read at all.
CheetahOlivetti: Considering most people's short attention spans, the revised letter will have more impact that the original letter.
I agree that the original needed some serious editing. It was a big pile of tl;dr. If you want to make a point about pro-life, fine. If you want to talk about Obama, fine. But don't keep talking in one long incredibly unbroken post moving from topic to topic (even though it's quite hypnotic).
PLEASE stop posting links for Daily Kos. They are a hate site pure and simple. Anytime anyone they dislike gets any coverage, they go into a group seethe mentality and post the most hateful comments I have ever seen on the internet.
They explicitly call for the murder of people that do not think like them. Read the comments yourself if you dare.
Desterion 2008-08-18 08:31:58 AM
Jesus christ. They brought back the auto-greenlight program for daily kos posts and in the process made it faster and stronger.
BRENDAN-FACE 2008-08-18 10:23:04 AM
The edited version made the writer's intentions clear in a far more eloquent fashion. Any intelligent reader would be able to surmise the point of the article without being beaten over the head with it. The initial submission was generally too wordy, and contained instances of awkward syntax.
