I have 2 'biracial' children ( one is black/white one is Japanese/white). I also have 'white' children. When asked to fill out their race on forms, I always check other and write in Human.

I have human children, screw the government for trying to make me label them.

Doesn't anyone listen to the words of Michael Jackson? It doesn't matter...it just doesn't matter...

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character

strangeguitar 2008-08-17 04:53:40 PM
My new twins are bi-racial and if comes to checking a box to determine their race, I'll think I'll just leave it blank.

z_gringo [TotalFark] 2008-08-17 05:10:34 PM
How about we just get rid of those parts of the forms from now on. Of course we will also have to get rid of any special treatments one shoudl receive because of their race

Given the reporting requirements for minorities and such under NCLB, there's no excuse for this not having been fixed at least 4 or 5 years ago.

Given the fact that ethnicities have been blending in this country for generations, there's no excuse for it not having been fixed in 1990.

Why can't people ever disagree with something without getting 'upset'? Just notify the freaking school officials with a heads up and move on.

Having read TFA, ignore me. Seems like she was pretty cool about it.

What about crossing out "White" and filling "Beige?" Or maybe "Off-White?" Or "Cat" written in crayon?

I'm guessing that there is money issues involved in the state reporting of these stats.... the schools don't care what race you are, but the state tells them the options for the list and requires it.

Wisconsin may be a bit on the slow side with adding "other". Most of the state is white hicks. Very few "others" in most of the state (except for Hmongs, but that's a completely different controversy).

Of course, when her child is older, they may be wise to opt for "black"... more opportunity for scholarships, etc.

GaryPDX [TotalFark] 2008-08-17 06:28:41 PM
I usually check other and write in "Cracker".

CheddarPants [TotalFark] 2008-08-17 06:58:58 PM
I'm white as can be, but I've been checking "other" since high school.

JasonOfOrillia 2008-08-17 06:59:48 PM
Doesn't the "one-drop" rule mean that they are black?

Obvious solution, half the black bubble and half the white bubble.

simpsonfan 2008-08-17 07:01:00 PM
I usually check 'other' and write in Klingon, or Vulcan, or whatever, depending on my mood.

ScottMpls 2008-08-17 07:01:04 PM
Isn't "D" usually "All of the above"?

Blah, welcome to my world.

Lately I've noticed that most forms now have the ability to check more then one box.

davynelson 2008-08-17 07:03:06 PM
the question is why should there be a field to fill out for this?

on ANY questionnaire or form.

Considering they already have plans in place to fix it, I think the woman needs to calm the fark down. They've acknowledged there is a problem, they have a plan in place the fix the problem. Let it go.

Then we wouldn't be able to track the inequities caused by a racist white system. We need to know who's getting screwed by whitey.

Good quote. Too bad certain people in this country refuse to accept that.

I say the form IS racist, and if you knew me, you'd know that I am clearly not a PC guy. There is an inherent racism, if I can take a guess at the intentions of the people who wrote it.

The implication, at least in the old days, is that a white man and a white woman had a white baby, and a black man and black woman had a black baby. If either parent was black, the kid was black, because of the inherent implication that white is pure, and adding any blood of the African race was diluting it.

Sounds racist to me.

aerojockey [TotalFark] 2008-08-17 07:10:21 PM
Stupid woman. Your biracial children are white unless they need a scholarship, then they're black.

I wonder what would happen if I wrote in "unknown" or something short and spiffy like "neander".

Except that the woman who looked over her form circled 'white' for her.

Samsaran: It is time for this country to be color blind. No affirmative action, no racial quotas, no raced based legislation of any kind.

That's racist.

nhkenn 2008-08-17 07:15:03 PM
shouldn't race not be an issue at all? why should you have to declare your race on any form?

Ima4nic8or 2008-08-17 07:15:50 PM
What she should be offended about is that they are asking at all. Why does the school need this info? Is teaching a black kid different from teaching a white kid?

Critical-Fukc 2008-08-17 07:15:53 PM

My sister has two children by a man who is of American Indian decent. When she first asked the question about what to box to check shortly after the birth of her first child, my dad answered, "American Indian, that way when it comes time for her to go to college she'll get more money in the form of grants as an American Indian than as a white girl."

Aboleth 2008-08-17 07:17:19 PM
Why can't the form be something like this:

What is the color of your child? (Please enter a number between 0-255)

Cyan:[ ]
Magenta: [ ]
Yellow: [ ]
Black: [ ]
