They should kill all the bears so some dude in Alaska could walk safely at night.

"On one recent evening, Rees heard splashing in the creek near his Eagle River home and assumed it was salmon. Seconds later, however, a bear rushed at him from the woods and knocked him to the ground.

"I wasn't going to lay down and take it. The bear came and tried to fight me," said Rees, 18, who works in a meat store. "I started punching it in the head, kicking it and elbowing it ... I was boxing him using one arm to defend, one arm to strike.""

Unless that kid had some serious scars I'm gonna call BS on that one.

Yes but we also eliminated every natural predator the bears had for our own safety, We have to control their population. Bears start attacking humans for one reason and one reasons only, Over Population. Once the normal Food Supply available to the bears is exhausted they start seeking inhabitation areas for replacement food stocks, keep the bear population in check is no only god for Human but good for the bears as well....

Good thing bears only breed every 5-7 years producing 1-3 cubs. Otherwise their numbers would be growing! Good thing we have them in decline.

Sharks aparantly, according to an article last week...

Bears are wild animals. I don't know how many times people need to be told this. Wild animals behave in ways that are concerned about food, procreation, and the territory that allow those two things.

Bears have no natural predators, other than man and other bears (territorial fighting). A mountain lion is not going to attack a grizzly bear.

People need to take precautions. Wear a .44 or carry a shotgun with slugs. Bear spray does work, despite what all the ITG gun nuts will claim. It has protected more people than it has failed, by a good margin, and it is easier to deploy than hitting a rushing bear with a bullet or slug.

Wandering around at night in Alaska without thinking about bears is foolish.

Lastly, bears don't care about zoning ordinances or incorporated/unicorporated demarcations, just so everyone is clear on that.

My uncle used to be a ranger for Chugach State Park. I know for damn sure that he takes a loaded shotgun with him to all his outdoor excursions.

/He has some beanbag rounds to scare them off if they get too close, and loads a few slugs behind them if things get messy
//Though I don't know if he's had to use them
///Goes to call uncle to find out

Tribs: You can parry a bear's paw with your arm... once.

Exactly. A bear has enough strength in it's shoulders and arms to knock your head clean off. People that fantasize about fighting bears should see one feed on a fresh carcase.

Some people say humans are to blame for the confrontations and that no bears should be killed because of the attacks.

Of these, none had been attacked by a bear.

I've seen video of a wolf pack attacking a bear. It was pretty intense. IIRC, the bear hightailed it out of there and the wolves took it's food.

all we need to do is find that guy who claimed to be able to talk to the bears. He'll be able to tell them to stay out of the city. What was his name? Oh right, we need to find that Grizzly Man. He had his own tv show, he's just what we need.

Hey, I just moved there last week. We were giving a pamphlet on not feeding the wildlife. I feel that if you don't know enough on your own not to feed wild bears or moose, then yea, go ahead and do it.

one night my girlfriend and I were watching 'Girls Next Door'. If you know nothing of this show, first, you don't know how lucky you are. Secondly, it's Hugh Hefner's three current girlfriends and their shallow lives. This episode, the only one I could ever stand to get most of the way through, involved going to Alaska to visit one of the playmate's relatives. Walking around with that playmate's father, in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness the bleeding heart playmate got upset that the father, who knew what the hell he was doing, having lived in Alaska his entire life, had a shotgun with him in case of bear attack. Bleeding Heart Playmate started to biatch about how wrong it was going to be to kill a helpless bear and was so offended by this that she was going to join a cause to protect bears from bastards like this guy.

/not once did he have to fire the rifle
//still didn't make bleeding heart shut up about it
///was hoping for a bear attack so she could see just how stupid she was...

True dat. My back property line butts up against the Chugach National Park. In just the last week I've had 2 wolves, 1 black bear and uncountable moose wander through. Living in Anchorage 'civilization' gives a false sense of security to many and the only ones at fault for all the bear attacks this year are the people.

You don't ride bikes near a spawning salmon stream at midnight alone; you don't walk 10 feet from a spawning salmon stream at 2am alone. And you don't leave your trash outside all night and wonder why the bears are so 'bad'.
