One of the greatest songs they ever wrote. Such words, if everybody would just live like that.

One of my favorite Gilmour solos ever.

The only good song they wrote after Waters left. A very good one though.

/No Waters, no Floyd IMHO

i don't like this song very much.

I like "one slip" and "learning to fly" better.

hell, the rest of that album was pretty crappy tho...

i thought "the Division bell" was a big step up, song quality wise.... it's a pretty good album... not as lyrically/conceptually deep as "amused to death" but about 5x more listenable, music wise.

Gilmour [and wright]: the [good/great] music of The Floyd
Waters: the great lyrics and concepts.

having one without the other [ie. solo stuff] is like having a peanut butter jelly sandwhich, but once without the jelly and once without the peanut butter... it just isn't as good that way as it is together, as one.

ie. "Division Bell" was very good musically, not so much lyrically
ie. "Pros and Cons" was very good lyrically, not so much musically. [ie. just 2 or 3 repeating musical themes thru-out the album].

/ saw Roger's DSOTM tour last year... was awesome... way better performance of DSOTM than PULSE one ever was...

i also think that the "delicate sound of thunder" vhs video is one of the very worst concert videos i've ever seen...

/ is it true that Gilmour did most of the studio album bass parts in the 70's floyd albums?

No, only the fretless bass when it was used was Gilmour.

Waters is a decent rock and roll bassist. Not stellar or even great, just good enough to carry the song well.

I never cared much for Pink Floyd's music, but that doesn't mean it sucks either - just not my taste in music.

Having said that, Gilmour is one of the best guitarists ever. It's not his speed or technical prowess - it's his touch. He has a gift that you don't/can't learn. Either God gives it to you or not.

He could pull any guitar off the shelf at WalMart and make any song sound golden. It took me years to appreciate his talent and I'm glad I finally did.

This show was amazing. It was broadcast around the world, and they used a barge on the river as their stage..

Unfortunately there were time constraints and the local authorities who has said they would provide police, washroom facilities, food and water screwed it up and then blamed Floyd for the problems.

In a word:

DREADFUL

Pure embarrassment.
"Pompeii" it is NOT.

I think I seem to recall hearing that the whole time Waters was fighting for ownership of the name "Pink Floyd" he didn't even actually want to use it for himself as everyone assumed. He just wanted to own it so he could let it die a peaceful death and retain it's integrity.

I've always enjoyed this song.

Gulper Eel [TotalFark] 2008-08-17 05:19:56 PM
It's one part "Wish You Were Here" (the chorus) and one part "Comfortably Numb" (the solo). Sure, there are worse jumping-off points and it's still better than most of what gets on rock radio, but "On The Turning Away" comes close to sounding like a cover version of their own songs.

I saw The Division Bell concert twice in 1994. Awesome ;)

Did anyone ever settle the Publius Engima thing?

yeah... i remember reading on one of the main pink floyd sites [brain damage?] recently that gilmour said it was just a publicity stunt, or some such thing.

Both Dave and Roger are smart guys and surely realize that one of them (Roger) has the concepts and lyrics, and one of them (Dave) has the music. Together, it's multi-platinum music-that-will-live-forever magic, but separately, it's like... well, meh.

You can hate on each other all you want, scream at each other in isolation booths in studios we won't learn about until after the record drops, but please... PLEASE... PLEASE work together again and give us just a bit of the magic we've all missed out on during all these years of regrettable acrimony.

/Morrissey and Marr, that goes for you too

Seen Waters twice. Wanted to see Gilmour but couldn't get seats.

Can't wait for a reuinion someday soon. Seems everyone in the camp "could" do it except Gilmour really leans towards it's the past and I'm not interested.

Although over the past few years he has gone on either side saying it's not impossible to think of a reunion and also there's no point and nothing to prove.

Galaxy of Prawns 2008-08-17 09:06:11 PM
As far as I'm concerned nothing without both Gilmour and Waters can be considered "Pink Floyd", but this is a good song, even if it does sound a little "charity recording"-ish.

I have to agree here. For me, being able to put emotion and atmosphere in your music is the most important. Knopfler and Gilmour are the best at it, IMO.
