It's interesting that TFA doesn't mention how to train cats to stop doing things. You know, crazy things.

Like, for instance... I know a cat. A friend's cat. Yeah, that's it! Who constantly wants to be on the other side of doors. Let's call her "Other Side". Now, it doesn't matter which side of the door she is on at the time. It is just important that she get to the other side. Once she is there--well, I am sure you can see where this is going. And it (almost) never stops. Day/Night. And don't say leave the doors open. We have a large family, and children, and other pets. Other Side cannot rule the house. Fark that cat. (grin)

Her precious training doesn't mention that.

Use two cats, indeed.

/cats can only be trained with electroshock therapy.

I think you may have gotten into the nip a bit yourself there.

Why would you want to train a cat? If you don't like the way cats act, don't get one.

And people who have their cats de-clawed should be beaten with that guy's whip from the other article.

That's what I was looking for. This little guy may LOOK sweet and innocent, but he is a terrorist. He constantly attacks and wrestles with my other two old ladies. I know he's just being a kitten, but damn I can't wait to chop off his balls. I hope it calms him down a little. 24/7 chasing, screaming and hissing.

girljen - I'm sorry about Rachel Kitty. :-(

We lost our big kitty on valentine's day. He was awesome. I once had a cat named Polly that could "fetch" the rings off of milk cartons. But I don't think that I can claim that I trained her to do it. She just started doing it once day...She also was evil in all other respects.

The cat I was talking about above (Other Side/Heather) is the sweetest cat, and knows her name, will come (only to me) when called, but the only trick she knows is - "Sit still! Look pretty!"

She's really good at it, though.

:-)

meh, I'm sure that will slow down. that or teach him to love/be scared of you. My cat stops whatever and runs away if I yell No.

I hope so. I wouldn't mind so much except that the other two are 13 & 16. They are so not used to this and I feel bad for them.

He runs when I yell NO, but he's back 3 seconds later.
He's a rescue kitty, I wasn't planning on getting another, ever. But I felt so bad for him.

awwww. Our dog is getting really old, and we know he won't be around much longer. I'm going to have to take my mom to the shelter when she's ready, and I dunno how I'm going to resist getting another cat. esp since I won't be allowed to have another (where I'm living).

Katie98_KT 2008-08-17 10:03:52 AM
er. go with my mom to the shelter to get a new doggy (not that we're just dying to replace my dog, but I know my mom won't be happy without something around the house, and our doggie has lived a long, full life)

You're missing the point...it's part of Cat Philosophy and Worldview.

There Shall Be No Doors- There Shall Be Only Portals....except when there's scary stuff like dogs, rain, cold, snow and anything else that may affect my comfort level. Then there had damn well BETTER be a door!

I've had cats to whom getting their pet human to open the door for them 8,845,385,296 times a day is an interactive game.

Finally got disgusted and propped the door open, told them I was busy.
"Knock yourselves out, kids."
The looks on their little faces..."Hey! No fair! You're cheating!"

Katie98_KT: dogs are awesome too. But doggies don't cuddle very well (most, that is).

I've had five dogs, and all of them knew how. Three dog night and all that.

My son's apartment manager wouldn't let him keep a cat in the apartment. He left the cat at my house for a year and I taught the thing how to sit before it would get a cat treat.

When he picked up the cat, I told him I had trained the cat. Of course he said, "No, Dad -- cat's don't DO that." So I showed him how the cat DID do that. He told me it was a "habit," not training. The cat was just in the "habit" of sitting down when I told it to sit. Ok sure.

DantheApe [TotalFark] 2008-08-17 10:16:46 AM
i have an old cat who actually comes to me when i call for him

The only real trick he does that i can think of is that he will "tap" you if he wants what you are eating. He will sit at your feet, lean forward and tap your knee with his paw, then go back to a sitting position. If he dosent get your attention or you dont react he taps you again with one claw, not a paw-o-claws but just a single claw.

*sigh* it's at this point that we give in and give him the food (he has a thing for pork products...he even hears a pack of bacon open and he's at your feet) So yea, either we have him trained or he has us...still debating that one.

please come train my cat for me. that would be awesome.

Also, that is SO a dad thing to do. "hmm, I have to take care of this cat for a year, what should I do with it? I know, I'll teach it to sit!" dads and really high people. you're retired, aren't ya?

Taught my ex's cat to 'dance' for her kitty treats...figured she ought to do something to earn them besides nag...
On the vocal cue "Lulu, dance!" she'd get up on her hind legs and turn in a circle.
I'd make her turn a full 3600 circle before giving her the treat and praising her...

The problem here is not the cats, but the inconsiderate slobs who own them.

A cat is going to be a cat whether you like it or not, and it is going to roam, yowl, stink the place up and tear the house to pieces.

Cat owners know this, so they toss the cat out at night, to let it bother other people. I had two of them fighting under my widnow every night for a month, right about 3 AM.

Talking to a cat owner is like talking to a brick wall, except the brick wall is a little more intelligent.

edharris: I do not recommend throwing a can full of coins

No shiat Dr Dolittle.

Agreed. Who the fark throws a can of coins at a cat, beyond someone who really shouldn't have a cat anyway?

I've trained my middle cat (Jack the Tripper) to play fetch with jingle balls. Actually, the more I think about it, it wasn't so much me training him, as it was him training me to throw the ball for him to chase.

All of our cats come when they're called. All of them recognize simple things, like "no."

We had a cat (Angel Trumpet) who's since gone on to kitty Valhalla who would regularly go into heat. She used to wake us up in the middle of the night yowling until we trained her on the command, "Use your inside voice." She'd quiet right down.

Our youngest, Ragnarok Venom, has shown an incredible aptitude for following complex instructions, like, "Jack's being a turd, go over there and jump on his head."

Our oldest, Hemlock Pervert, used to follow instructions, but now just tries to survive his younger brothers. He still hasn't forgiven us for Ragnarok's adoption.

As any cat person can tell you, the real key is treating them like individuals. There's really no such thing as a typical cat.

DantheApe, OMG! I am sitting here glad that I didn't have my Diet Coke in my mouth. One saved keyboard!

Heather does that every time I eat chicken. I knew it was a trick. One called "Spoiled Pretty Cat Tricks Me Out Of My Lunch". But again, *I* didn't train her to do it. At least three times a week, I'll be eating, and I will feel this soft pat, and there she will be... Down to the single claw thing, exactly that way! Wow.

And geetus, gorgeous puppy! I have a 14yo white lab mix named Isis. She cuddles the cat...

:-)

Katie98_KT, If any dads or high people show up to train your cat, send them to my house when they're done. (You know, if it works.)
