""There were times it was kind of scary, I have to say, but somehow I knew we were going to be all right," said Osman. He had bought a DVD on mountain survival at the Mt Cook Village before embarking on the climb."

Oh, he bought a DVD...

I'm surprised no one's made him the chief rescue ranger by now.

That's what happens when you use up your beer money to buy survival DVDs...idiot...next time they'll do it up right; ditch the tent and bring the keg.

Maybe they did. How much is "enough beer" to last through a blizzard with nothing to eat but chocolate?

Chick who;s athletic enough to climb a damn mountain, and down to earth enough to crave a beer after digging out of a snow bank? I think I'm being QUITE picky, thank you very much.

//Unlikely I'd be climbing the mountain in the dead of winter, though. I prefer to climb/hike in the summer, when I am less likely to freeze to death if something goes awry

Considering how well chocolate goes with beer, I'd say...

A lot. They all look like drunks. They'd probably have leftover chocolate.

Maybe they had both. But dammmit give it 6 months and some clowns will surprise us with the North American version of getting stuck on a glacier.

why is this bint a HERO tag?

I am sick and tired of people lauding mountain climbers who get their skinny asses stuck on a cliff face being lauded as heros.

They aren't heroes. They are stupid farking people who cost society thousands upon thousands of dollars, put other people's lives at risk to go rescue their dumb asses and harm their friends and family emotionally all because they can chase a silly dream of 'self achievement.'

It's arrogance, and hubris, and I for one think we should leave them right the hell THERE.

Anyone climbing a mountain should be made to sign a waiver that reads 'in case I get stuck on this thing, I realize that I decided to climb it for no good reason other than my own self serving desire to prove something, and if I screw up it's my own damned fault, sorry I'm dead.'

Really, it's freaking stupid.

Subby here. Hero tag isn't my doing. I submitted with an amusing tag and it had it for awhile, but I guess enough people complained and the mods changed it.

I agree, I climb, back-country ski, mountain bike and generally spend a lot of time in remote areas. All of these things are indeed stupid frivolous wastes of time. That said, they have given me the best experiences of my life and taken me to beautiful places and the relationships I have with the people I share these things with I value more than anything. I think personal responsibility and an honest assessment of your ability will help you more than a cell phone or a helicopter. As far as public subsidies for search and rescue here in BC it is mostly volunteers (like me and my friends) that are doing this work.

I don't climb to boast or for "self-achievement" but because I love the outdoors, it is where I want to be. Yes, it is risky but the reward is worth it.img212.imageshack.us

pinguwin 2008-08-17 09:54:02 PM
I agree with the one who says these people aren't heroes. They were saving their own asses, not the buttocks of someone else.

In New Zealand, rescue is considered a public operation and you generally don't have to pay. They can lean on you hard if you do something monumentally stupid, but not in a genuine emergency, even if you're a doofus.

As far as leaving them on the mountain, ain't gonna happen. I know many rescuers from NZ and they are a fine group with whom I've talked to ensure I know the area well and don't need their services. I often go to remote areas by myself and carry an emergency beacon. The rescuers are dedicated as all get up. They are volunteers and if the call comes when they are at work or with the family, they'll go. Even if they know you're dead, they'll still keep looking. There was a kayaker that disappeared of the southern coast a few years ago. They kept looking for him even after knowing he was dead, finding the kayak but no body. Some of the rescuers had counseling as they were upset leaving a body out there.

So maybe rescue is right or wrong, I'm not saying, but you won't be forgotten about...no way. So if there are any heroes in this story, it's the people who responded to the beacons.

New Moon Rabbit 2008-08-18 10:05:38 AM
Hero? WTF?

The heroes are the ones who went in to rescue these idiots.

Should have let them get themselves out of this mess, just like they got themselves into it.

You sir, fail. Look up about 4 comments where I said that I submitted it with an Amusing tag, NOT hero. Try reading above before you run in here and make yourself look stupid.
