Pffft, I could do that.

Yeah, but can he communicate telepathically with fish?

/Nice job

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to win 8 gold... farkin' A you mean you already did that? DAMMIT.
This tape will self destruct in 3 seconds.

Michael Phelps is absurd.

I heard he has to eat like 10,000 Calories a day just to have enough energy for all the swimming he does.

At first I was like "Yes, he's amazing, but hero tag?" Then I remembered what a childish ass Spitz is being and I drop my concerns.

mikaloyd 2008-08-17 02:19:18 AM
There are those who said that we should have boycotted these Olympics. They can kiss my ass.

Great? Pshaw! We're gonna need some new adjectives for whatever he is!

/Thanks Go...I mean Mr. Freeman

sarcastic664 2008-08-17 02:19:39 AM
Oh, and I watched every one of his gold medal races, and it's been an amazing ride. This is one of those things that you'll talk about for years, like watching the moon landing.

JFP's Gym Partner 2008-08-17 02:19:58 AM
I can do the eating 12,000 calories a day thing... the fast swimming, not so much.

I read that as 10,000 Chinese a day. That would be a lot more impressive.

What is Spitz doing? I haven't seen any stories on his reaction to this.

Has he? He seemed pretty gracious the other night when Phelps tied him. But that could've been an act.

He is a great, great athlete. Which also pretty much makes him a total twat.

absolutben 2008-08-17 02:22:55 AM
Quick! Someone with some ps skills needs to make a "Can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am" motivator a'la Captain Kirk, for Phelps.

WoodyHayes [TotalFark] 2008-08-17 02:23:01 AM
Bah, he be a piece of shiat.

i36.tinypic.com

Seriously though, congrats, a hell of an achievement.

Kudos to his teammates on the two relays I think it was as well.

Sluggard Stone 2008-08-17 02:23:25 AM
That's pretty cool. Good on him.

Coco LaFemme [TotalFark] 2008-08-17 02:23:55 AM
Not to sound all mushy and overwrought, but he has truly restored my faith in American sports. With all the allegations of cheating and doping and athletes acting like complete twatwaffles all the time, it's beyond refreshing to see an overly-talented, overly-humble guy go up there and do what no one thought could be done, and do it with ease. It makes me think that there really ARE athletes out there doing it for a pure love of the sport rather than to see how much money/poon they can get just for doing it.

I follow competitive swimming anyway, so I've been following him for years and I hoped he could have done it in Athens, but I said....wait 'til Beijing. He'll do it there. And he did. I'm glad to say that I witnessed it, and I hope it's a feat that's never matched. The hero tag was very apropos, subby.

Thatguy 2008-08-17 02:24:01 AM
Dwedit: What about Fred?

He's coming up with some new propaganda, stuff like GOD HATES SWIMMERS and THANK GOD FOR DEAD GOLD MEDALISTS.

(unless you meant Fred Phelps, father of Michael, in which case he's probably doing something else)

The Duke of Carrot Flowers 2008-08-17 02:26:07 AM
Imagine what he could have accomplished if he had tried to do something useful.

Sybian_Ride 2008-08-17 02:26:29 AM
This dude rocks. I was wondering if he was going to be able to pull it off, it's days of pushing one's self to the absolute edge from what I've read/seen about what it takes to even come close to doing what he's done. Had some doubts since the #8 was won by 1/10th of a second.

/also really cool to see a fellow American do this

Hero tag? Really? Submittard, get a grip.

/Michael Phelps is pretty hot though, even if he does have a bit of the Marfan's disease going on.
//He'll probably die of a heart attack not too long from now.
///Debbie Downer - that's my thing.

Well, Phelps doesn't do much else. He swims, he eats, he sleeps, he poops (probably a lot), day in and day out. There seems to be little else to his life. Maybe TV. Given how inarticulate he is, he obviously doesn't read very much or otherwise engage his brain in anything other than swimming. It all seems to work for him, so more power to him.

I don't think he's unintelligent or uninformed at all. He just chose to attend a university that doesn't focus very much on communication across the curriculum :-) Plus I think he's got a bit of the Aspie thing going on.

oops, even closer, a lot closer.

Thought it was 1/10th, more like 1/100th. Should have referenced the front page sitting in the other room before hitting 'Submit'.

This is definitely an incredible accomplishment, but comparing the excitement of this to the moon landing? That's absurd. I guess you had to be alive then to understand, but it's not even remotely in the same league.

Transpogue 2008-08-17 02:36:58 AM
Phelps is one of those guys that if he hadn't become a swimmer, something would be very farked up with the world. Swimming chose him. His mom, bless her heart, sure whipped up a fine physical specimen.

And he's still a freaking kid. He'll probably do at least two more Olympics.

Now he needs to rest for a week, fly home, and collect the mounds and mounds of tail waiting for him.

And you know that boy has endurance.

Hell, I'm a queer girl, and I'd give him a shot.

Spitz is fine-- he was upset that he'd not been invited by the IOC to be there, and he should have been. He was a legend for 36 years. Spitz needs to be honored for holding that for so long.

If he can...we may have to re-evaluate Aquaman as a superhero. Or at least as a superhuman sex machine.

/Wondering if he would mind doing someone old enough to be his mother.
