(Lincoln Star Journal) Asinine Travel advisory for folks driving I-80 through Nebraska: just because the giant gas station marquee offers gas for $3.75/gallon doesn't mean they aren't going to charge you $4.16/gallon   (journalstar.com) divider line 68

can we say- false advertising?

I hope the Attorney General hands some serious spankage on these stations. It's like Little Bunny Foo-Foo or something.

I wonder if pumps selling gas @ $4.16 a gallon burn better than pumps @ $3.75 a gallon. hmmm.

Stupid liberal government, trying to force their consumer-protection statutes on the poor, honest, hard-working businessman!

That just sucks, cus I know many people won't check it or second guess it.

As someone born in Nebraska, I expect a cut of these profits.

Let me throw out a semi-random piece of advice: check the date on the inspection sticker in the pump. Most states require an inspection at least annually, to make sure that the "gallon" of gas you buy really refers to (a volume 109.136649 times that of a cube with sides equal to the distance that light in a vacuum travels during one period of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium-133 atom). If not calibrated correctly, the volume can be off by more than a little bit.

I noted one of the cheaper stations in town was almost a year past the inspection due date; I also noted my mileage seemed noticeably lower when I filled there. I checked with the state department in charge of such inspections to verify that it was an annual requirement; they said they'd stop by.

The price seemed a bit closer to the norm the last time I drove past....

I drove through Nebraska on 80 this summer..... it was a full 30 cents less to buy just 2 miles off the highway.

Crown_of_Shoes: I drove through Nebraska on 80 this summer..... it was a full 30 cents less to buy just 2 miles off the highway.

Welcome to my world. Here in Lincoln, you can drive past one station offering $3.59, then drive two blocks to have another station, often of the same brand, offering the same gas for $3.79. What happened to gas price wars? It's just a pick and choose here and you might get the cheaper gas. That's why I bought a motorcycle. Gas always seems cheap.

HeartlineTwist 2008-08-17 01:56:35 AM
In all fairness, this is why you check the actual price at the pumps before you pump. I don't know what station this is because I didn't RTFA, but at most major gas stations, the display at the actual pump is rather obnoxious.

Well, that's better than diluting gas with water, isn't it?

Some stations elsewhere in the state got busted doing just that. People were having "gas" pumped out of their car that was 75% water.

Uh, if you're on I-80 in Nebraska I think you have bigger problems to worry about than false gas prices. Like, the fact you're in Nebraska for starters...

Yeah these farkwads were doing this alot last summer, especially the stations in Ogalalla Nebraska. The state law states that you only have to offer the advertised price at one pump not all of them. There were several calls to amend the law to make this obvious bait and switch illegal, but it seems as though the term limited senators cared more about stupid crap like the smoking ban and forcing cities to fluoridate their water.

hershmire: Yeah, but then you have to go 2 miles into Nebraska. No thanks.

You're already in Nebraska. I dive from Cheyenne to Lincoln at least twice a year. Sheer hell. The price of gas has nothing to do with it. $10 a gallon would be fine just to get out.

BigChad 2008-08-17 03:36:21 AM
FTA:

"When Dolan asked a clerk in the Cenex station about the discrepancy, she said the cheaper fuel was sold at one of the eight pumps..."

Doesn't look like false advertising to me.

Deceptive? Yes.
Illegal? Me thinks not.

The bit about switching to lower quality gas is a MUCH bigger deal IMHO.

Nebraska; even from 36,000 feet, it takes way too farking long to fly over.

Keep the corn flowing, you sell-outs.

ssrat 2008-08-17 04:27:43 AM
The fact that they let them sell it at just ONE pump (does it even say how accessible it has to be? a small hand cranked one with a 55G drum=legal?) may not make it illegal, but the fact is MOST people who see a gas price will not bother to check if that is what they are getting from the pump itself.

You see the big sign, you do not see *at one pump only on the same billboard.

Pass the stupid loophole, and then wait a few months then go right after the licenses of these owners

You gotta wonder if the Nebraska Tourism folks are facepalming themselves over this. They try so hard to get people to visit and drop some money there.
Me? I don't mind Nebraska OFF THE INTERSTATE. There are a lot of pretty parts (Loop River). But they have been ripping people off on gas for years on the Interstate - and EVERY speeding ticket I have gotten in the last 15 years has been there. EVERY ONE. I deserved all except the last one - was NOT speeding - trooper lied - was not willing to go back for court date to fight it. Pricks.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2008-08-17 07:46:34 AM
In the 1970s gas stations posted the price of a pack of cigarettes hoping people would think it was the price of gas. This year I saw the price for bottled water posted prominently in an attempt to convince people they could get gas for $3 a gallon.

dtrends 2008-08-17 09:03:58 AM
Sounds legit to me. It's just like any store special - you have to match the ad to the exact product on the shelf. And it's marked right on the pump for gas. If you pump the higher priced gas, you're an idiot. Why people think they can sue for there own poor decisions is beyond me!

frank249 2008-08-17 09:22:57 AM
If you visit Canada, multiply the price on the marque by 4 to convert from liters to gallons. Currently we are paying $4.84 per gallon in Ottawa. Only a few weeks ago it reached $6.00 per gallon in Vancouver. Europeans are paying more than double what you pay, http://www.see-search.com/business/fuelandpetrolpriceseurope.htm

I laugh when I hear Americans complain about the price difference 41 cents per gallon. Thats only 10 cents per liter which happens to us on a daily basis.

I've visited Nebraska twice in two years (in-laws live there) and I enjoyed myself, but there's just some weird shiat going on there and it miffs me sometimes when I see what sort of "controversial" stuff is being discussed that hasn't been an issue in Alberta for, well, decades (like flouride in the water) or is just totally foreign to me, culturally.

Also, the interstate is farking horrible. On the trip back the first time, we had to go from Lincoln to Omaha, and they closed have the farking freeway to fix some shiat. Traffic was backed up, literally, for about 12 kilometres. Thankfully, we weren't caught in that.

Travis McGee 2008-08-17 10:33:54 AM
My favorite are the stations along I-80 that don't even bother to list the prices on their signs. They just leave it blank. You find out what price you'll pay when you drive up to the pump. Even if it's outrageous, they must figure you'll say "Screw it" and fill up anyway.

I'm looking at YOU, North Platte.

But I'm too smart for them, mm hmm. I'm already driving into the town proper to visit the Runza restaurant no matter what time of day or night it is, and I get my gas at the stations the locals patronize.

PsychoTherapist 2008-08-17 11:09:50 AM
Apart from the bait-and-switch thing, anyone with any experience knows that driving an extra mile off the freeway can save you thirty cents per gallon in L.A., or about ten cents in Lincoln.

Gas is about 3.56 last I looked here in Lincoln, btw.

/suck it haters

brantgoose 2008-08-17 11:16:47 AM
You know, if you run out of numbers to put on your sign, you could always replace them with a sign that says "Second mortgages arranged".
