If the judge doesn't throw out this case then there is even less hope for America.

Is this an appropriate use of the "Why so serious?" meme?

There are times when Police seek to instill fear to youngsers using the extent of their abilities, among other tricks. Lets hope this is one of those circumstances. That is a rather harsh charge.

I wouldn't be surprised if the cops meant it. that's just the sort of nation we're becoming - harsh, intolerant and authoritarian. welcome to the future.

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin, 1755

Our founding fathers knew these people, and warned us against them. We are selling off our freedoms to get what our partially retarded president (and really the rest of the government, but hey, we keep electing them) calls security.

Give me liberty over security any day.

Being continually concerned about what the police consider to be "threatening" is exactly what I had in mind when I voted all those times. They are, after all, to be obeyed...

GAT_00 [TotalFark] 2008-08-16 10:44:23 PM
Could we really get a series of batteries hooked up to the Founding Father's graves? They're spinning so much they've got to be producing a lot of power that we are wasting.

No, the prank was well under control. It is Police Chief Martin's men who are out of control.

I guess they could be charged if the guys wrote they were going to rob the store or something like that on the cards...

The teenagers "were real remorseful. They said they never had any intentions of harming anybody," [Police Chief JC] Martin said after talking with them. He said it appeared to be "a prank that kind of got out of hand."

Yes, it did get out of hand - the moment you charged them.

now that was a great prank. And the fact that those guys were un-repentant made it even better.

More disturbing than the charges is the lack of anyone's willingness to do anything about it where this is happening.

Cops are either under the city, where the mayor and/or council appoints the police chief, or they're sheriff's deputies, in which case the sheriff is directly elected. In any case, there's an elected body who oversees this numbskullery. And they'll go to sleep tonight knowing their jobs are safe.

I'm infinitely more worried about dying of the flu or an embolism than some hadji, or other wise, killing me.

"Don't get me wrong; I'm sure that the cards were upsetting to those that found them (even though all they apparently said was "Joker"), and I agree that they should be charged with something for placing them. But conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism? Really?"

And I think the blogger is wrong in that the kids should be charged with something for placing the cards. Does every little incident have to end up in the criminal justice system? These adults should have their adult lives tainted over a stupid movie prank? And then what, they have problems getting a job, taking airplane flights, etc.

It seems like a race between the U.S. and the U.K. in which one can inflict the most nonsense on its citizens. This is what it must've been like when everything was going on in Northern Ireland.

Fark It [TotalFark] 2008-08-17 01:54:25 AM
Well what can they do? Today they're defacing a deck of Bicycles, tomorrow they'll be car-bombing judges, blowing up hospitals, assassinating the police commissioner, and making terrorist demands of an entire city.

Apparently, the Joker or Fool card means Madness and Bewilderment, not Killing of Paranoid Fundies.

Just proves that tarot really is prophetic. Bewildered and mad perfectly describes my mood on hearing about this.

Begoggle,

While I don't agree with I_AM_M, I don't agree with you, either.

The cops are nothing but the brute squad. Sometimes they get paid to be on your side, sometimes they get paid to be against you.

I won't be calling them for "help" any time soon.

Locations targeted:
- Wal-Mart
- Kmart
- the windshield of a vehicle parked at the town's Dairy Queen
- auto parts store

Obviously a sinister plan to attack these fine American institutions.

If they vandalized cards belonging to the stores, then I don't really give a damn if they are given the death penalty for it. I have no sympathy for vandals. But the article made it sound like they bought the cards, wrote on them, then left them in the store. If that's the case, they should give the death penalty to every cop and prosecutor pursuing the case against them.

Lesson to be learned here: ANY question a cop asks you...The answer is "LAWYER" no matter what they ask.
