Well, did he try the dog with a real injured person...? Animals know if someone is hurt or not, I bet he'd come through in a pinch. Or, he might steal the beef jerky out of the mangled pocket of the victim's Land's End hiking shorts. Whichever.

If she thinks her dog won't obey, she should try getting a cat to follow orders.

I see that 'frisk' means 'use' now.

The poor dog has a stupid haircut and can barely see. I betcha his understanding and focus would improve 100% if he could see your body language and see what you want from him.

This sounds like a case of an owner that failed to show their terrier who is boss. Airedales are easily trainable, but they're headstrong beasts - they need to be shown who is boss and that it is not the dog. This is true of all terriers, including the yappy little prissy ones.

Airedales were originally bred to hunt otters. You know these are - by design - a crafty, sneaky, fearless dog.

/the writer needs to man up to the dog

I blame the pure-positive revolution and the refusal to use certain training tools because OMG IS CR00l nd HRTS t3h D0G.

Squirt bottles as a consequence for breaking a stay? Riiiight.

With the right dog, a squirt bottle could work. But a big dog that could care less about a squirt of water, yeah, that's stupid.

I used to work for a dog trainer. 99% of the behavioral problems I saw were due to the owner refusing to be the boss. They wanted to be pals with their dog, or treat them like their child, rather than understanding that the dog's pack mentality means if you're just being buddies, then the dog's the alpha dog.

Before you can get -any- decent training done, you have to teach the dog that you're in charge. Sounds like this trainer didn't bother to go through that part with the owners... Generally if you can get the dog to realize you're the boss, you don't need much in the way of discipline techniques unless you have an extremely headstrong and aggressive dog. In that case... it's choke chains (just the chain type - the barbed type is usually not necessary and doesn't release very well, which can be dangerous) or shock collars all the way.

My dog and I were expelled from school. He was not a bad dog, just a friendly, normal rowdy dog. Never bit anyone, never chewed up the couch, didn't pee in the house, didn't chase cars or kids on bikes. He just didn't like being told what to do, and when in the company of other dogs, he was the dog who wanted to play. The woman running the course threw up her hands and told us both to get out and never darken her door again (exactly what she said, the biatch). On the way out, my dog lifted his leg and peed on the wall. Wish I had a pic of that. The trainers last words as we left were that I should have the dog put down and start over. I stopped payment on the tuition check. Had that dog for 14 years after that, and was the best dog ever.

The problem is, by the time a lot of people take their dog into training, they're up to or past the headstrong point. Cookie bribery is fine for learning, but for the correction and distraction phases...give me a training collar and the hell with the controversy...rather give my dog momentary discomfort than euthanasia just because he chose to chase a squirrel across the street and not come to my tasty piece of cheese or liver.
