Bush homeland security adviser Kenneth L. Wainstein said, "This is a continuum that started back on 9/11 to reform law enforcement and the intelligence community to focus on the terrorism threat."

The fact that this lays the groundwork/foundation for a facist government is just a happy coincidence, i'm sure....

This is an ill-hatched attempt at PR bullshiat.

1) The feds can't share classified info with local cops.
2) Local cops don't work for free.
3) Local cops can't use collected info for any trial.
4) Local cops intentionally spying on citizens at the request of the feds without reasonable suspicion will land them in jail.

This "plan" is a waste of time that will never be implemented.

My guess? This is ridiculous thunder designed to bait Obama into coming out against a National Security issue, which would work if only he had a conscience about these things.

It's hard enough for local police to retain intelligence in the first place much less collect it.

Frickin' brilliant.

So, with a new Administration, you want to bet on the cries of "smaller government" from the minority party next year?

FTFA: the moves are intended to lock in policies for Bush's successor and to enshrine controversial post-Sept. 11 approaches that some say have fed the greatest expansion of executive authority since the Watergate era.

This is Cheney's way of saying goodbye. If he's lucky, he'll get a private cell at The Hague.

Way to not answer the question.
I'm with GaryPDX on this. We all know that there's evil afoot, but you're delusional if you think that the Dems are going to dismantle any of this stuff. "We can't expose the nation to The Terrorists(TM)!"

Why did Pelosi and Conyers sweep impeachment off the table almost immediately after the elections of 2006?

Dude, calm yourself. I agree that he can be a douche, but he's not a troll. Sometimes he makes really good points. This is one of them.

The Republicans painted all of us into a corner with all the "security" crap. If the Dems try to stop it they are "soft on terror" and it will get played up and crush them. If they stand up for our rights, too many utterly stupid people will cry and gnash their teeth for Congress' head. There is no way they try to stop this.

Bush set precedent for the Fed on this stuff. I don't see it being dismantled by anyone who retains the very power to do this. I don't care which or who the party is. The People themselves will have to get strong on this one. Like that will every happen.

Because in the impeachment hearings it will come out that although the Reps and executive branch shot the bank teller, the Dems drove the getaway car.

Funny, but the real reason is that Cheney would then be President.

The only way we, the people, will be able to take back our own government is by refusing to pay our Federal Income Tax. I'm talking by the millions. The only way to destroy corruption is to cut off the dollars that fund it. Do we have the courage? Or do we continue to listen to McCain and Obama talk about how the invisible man in the sky direct their policies? If any of you are watching this disgrace going on CNN, do you think these questions weren't provided to them beforehand? This is the fair and balanced questions we can't even trust our candidates to answer without previous notice and coaching? Everything we see about these people is such a joke. I'm so sick of this political bullshiat. We have been bought and paid for 1000 times over. If McCain says "My friends" one more time I might do something extreme.

Even if Cheney wasn't impeached at the same time, he would be neutered. He would only be a caretaker for the rest of the term. Any sabre rattling against rights would immediately be put down by the Legislative who had found their balls. Any sabre rattling for more war would mean his impeachment.

And then we'll be audited by the hundreds of thousands, and arrested by the tens of thousands. But only in ones or twos.

What it's going to take is tens of thousands of people in the street politely reminding the judiciary that they are the last line of defense of the Constitution, that We The People will no longer stand for this steady erosion of our rights, and that the next time this bullshiat requires us to interrupt our lives and speak up as a moben masse we're switching to torches and pitchforks.

Truth be told, I despise the fact that Bush has worked to ram the Un-Patriot Act up American people's a$$, and through the Congress, twice. Then again, Republican's can't exactly complain or they're in league with the durty, liberal, commie, islamo-fascist, terrorists! I know, because Rush, Fox News, Bill'O, Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter, Dick Cheney, George W. Bush, et al., all have said so!

Now that the shoe will be on the other foot, of course, they will complain. Then again, I'm not counting on Democratic people to still oppose it...

Gyrfalcon [TotalFark] 2008-08-17 03:07:05 AM
The problem is, no one's worrying about the real issue here. So they can spy on everyone. There's 300 million Americans. How many of us are actual threats? Of ANY kind? TenK? 100K?

We're all tech savvy here. We don't have anything like the kind of computing power needed to sort through 300 million data transfers daily to winnow out 100K worth of real threats. So they're wasting lots of time, lots of money, lots of manpower and all our civil rights...for what?

Lots of SH*T, that's what. This is why they missed 9/11. They were so busy sorting through reams of nonsense, no one had time to read the Phoenix Memo until it was too late. Oops! My bad! Or the Norway report about Madrid until...well, after the Madrid bombings. Oops!

I can't believe I'm the first in this thread to remind everyone: If you haven't done anything wrong, you have nothing to fear from your government.

Seriously: Your government LOVES you. We need to TRUST our government, for they have ONLY our best interests at heart. They LOVE us and want only to PROTECT us.
