Cool link but you need to warn folks about the NSFW language in the link.

Turn your volume down, at work TFers.

Yeah but if I had things being fired at me I'd probably be screaming fark! a lot too. (I just watched it in a absolutely quite study lounge. Lady next to be is not happy.)

That's great in a desert. In a city, those shells are going to do some damage when they land.

But hey, it's not our country, so who cares?

They use HEIT-SD High Explosive Incendiary Tracer - Self Destruct

They either hit the target or burn out in the air. That's the trail of white explosions that looks like fireworks.

The tracers self destruct but what do the actual shells that miss do?

Tracers are the glowing shells that let you know what you are shooting at in the dark right? It's every so many shells.

Each bullet is a tracer, they are designed to burn out in flight. If they hit a target they blow up. If they don't, they blow up. It might rain a little tungsten but it won't be deadly.

The ones that fire over water have a tracer every 5 rounds or so. They don't need to worry about where they go over water.

two points:

1. I think they are only deployed to forward operating bases

2. From Globalsecurity.org:

The complete C-RAM system networks a ground-based version of Phalanx together with the Army's Lightweight Counter Mortar Radar (LCMR) and Q-36 Target Acquisition Radar (AN/TPQ-36 Firefinder Radar). Unlike the naval version, C-RAM does not fire solid tungsten penetrators. Instead, self-destructing explosive bullets are used, in order to reduce the risk of civilian and friendly casualties.

I dunno....

...did they hit anything? Mortar shells should go off easy.

Big_Thumb [TotalFark] 2008-08-16 04:36:40 PM
How expensive would a salvo be from the the C-RAM compared to incoming mortar rounds, setting aside the system cost itself?

If it's anything like the Navy version, which I got to see in action during live fire exercises, then it pretty much tracks and destroys anything bigger than a human fist. Or so they say.

I take it the "revving chainsaw" noise is the sound of 50 rounds per second going downrange?

I've heard a number like 30 grand to load it, and that they can and will run out of ammunition in a single night if the enemy is at all accurate with their mortar rounds.

C-RAM is pretty close to CIWS....there are some differences tho'..

The system doesn't seek to destroy the target..although that is often a happy side effect..it seeks to slow it down..and then slow the pieces down..

I have seen the thing track and cut a 3/8" steel cable moving at
300+ knots...

wotnartd 2008-08-16 04:48:41 PM
This system doesn't need tracer rounds. It's all computer operated.

Each shell blows up, either on contact, or further down range.

This weapon system is pretty impressive no matter what type of ordinance you outfit it with - I saw the 50cal version go off quite a bit in Iraq. It looks like a string of molten metal at night with all the tracers.

Vid of the 50 cal version in testing.

The rounds self-detonate.

But he, its your ass, so why not talk out of it?

Befuddled 2008-08-16 04:54:57 PM
Wouldn't it be a lot cheaper to use a larger round that goes boom near the incoming mortar or missile round? They've had proximity fuses for at least fifty years.

$30-$40K to defend against $50 worth of rusty old mortar rounds. Heaven forbid soldiers should have to dig holes to protect themselves!

We are going to spend ourselves into oblivion.

Because mortars never land in holes and cannot do any damage to anything below ground level?

No, he's right. The soldiers in Iraq should just dig trenches like the guys who fought in WWI. Nobody got injured in that war.

It has got to be demoralizing when your all your rag tag group can do is launch a few mortars and we blast them out of the sky with awesome firepower. Either that or reinforce the view that we are the great satan.

Especially when the firing radar tracks the mortar and pinpoints where it was launched from, and an air strike soon ensues.

I am thankful we have the military we do. You see what happens to people who get overrrun by a bigger military. Georgia is old school raping and pillaging. The professional army comes blasting through destroying your army and defenses. Then when the bullets stop flying the real horror begins as the women are systematically raped by the scum that trails the army like sharks that smell the scent of blood. It's a feeding frenzy in the immediate aftermath of a blitz like the Soviets just did to Georgia. I'd rather my tax money gets wasted like this than just about any other way the government can waste it.

That answers the question of "why so many tracer rounds?". Let them know it won't work, and also boost friendlies' morale by showing them that the upper-ups care. (Firework display is a bonus)

Either that or reinforce the view that we are the great satan.

Respect me, or fear me.

Imagine being a civilian, war rampaging through out the world. Your city surrounded, the suburban areas on fire and empty. The population base has retreated to the city, taking refuge in the remaining bombed out buildings. You know that at night the bombing will begin. The death raining out from the sky. Random, unavoidable death. The phalanxs light up the sky tracking, 1, 4, 8 of them all at once. Running. But the incoming shells are too much. Soon, several of the guardians are targeted and destroyed. The city begins to shake as shells find their targets and buildings are destroyed. The phalanx keep firing, tracers igniting the sky. But they begin to falter. Slowly but without fail, they stop firing. You are left looking at the sky waiting to see the fire protect you. But you only hear the whistle of incoming fire and the glow of smoke rising from the fire.
